Fella who I work with told me today that he saw Folau and a group of other Wallaby players last night and asked me why they were in town.

Sums up the level of engagement the casual Wallaby supporter has with the game at present.

BH, although I think you are largely right about confining the discussion to the topic of the thread, taken literally that would mean no posts at all about the team makeup until it has been announced only a day or two before the game, and lately almost on game day by the delayed announcement of the reserves bench.

There are many aspects to the makeup of the team and the game plans constructed by the coaching staff that can be and deserve to be aired form the earliest moments leading to the next game. And a lot of those comments are quite rightly critical of the skills being shown by players either in or not in the squad, and of the coaching structures being followed in games.

For example, imo it is quite within the bounds of the thread topic to discuss the poor kicking outcomes that were apparent last week and have been for probably over 2 years now, and that discussion will inevitably come back to the longer term inadequacies of the players involved and the lack of action by the coaches to try to rectify the problem.

Same can be said about the very poor defensive patters on display last week and how they form part of an ongoing pattern that hasn't seen any improvement over 2016 and 2017.

Criticism of the coaches, particularly, and players who constantly show deficiencies in their play or game management should not be discouraged or banned just because it is aimed at, or suggests, longer term issues with a few of the favoured personalities involved.

Of course we should be discussing who the make up of the team should be. We don't need to wait until the team is announced.

We all know Foley doesn't have a long kicking boot and Genia is terrible at box kicking but there seems little point discussing long term inadequacies in their skills development across multiple coaches over lots of years each and every week. Talk about the specific situations that went wrong last week and what we can do instead. Foley isn't going to kick the ball 20m further next week and Genia won't suddenly box kick better than Aaron Smith.

Most people are pretty familiar with the general opinions of the regular posters here. Do we really need to talk about the same long running structural issues in each and every thread?

We all know there are major issues with the Wallaby defensive structures and are questioning the ongoing retention of Grey. Surely it is more constructive for the sake of this thread to look at specific situations that went wrong last week and tweaks that could happen this week to try and improve things.

What's the point of talking about a wholesale restructure of the coaching team in the match thread when everyone knows that those same people will be the coaches this week?

In my opinion the match thread should be about more immediate things that are relevant from one match to the next and there are lots of threads where we can talk about issues relevant for longer periods of time that are more structural.

Great post Slim on again.

I note you quoted Gnostic who has the uts to be critical of at least one of the Coaches.

I note n at least about 50+ posts of yours you ay noting about the Wallaby coaches,so obviously you are ecstatic the way the HC and Assistants are going.

No, I'm not.

But we all know that the same coaches that were in place last weekend will be in place this weekend.

Talking about issues that are applicable for the week rather than across multiple seasons seems more relevant to this thread though.

I'm sure if I did a quick search through my posts I would find plenty of posts critical of the Wallabies coaches, tactics, selections and more over the years............

But just like the list of LP's I bought in he last 12 months, I'm sure you'll find them in more relevant threads..........

Unless you'd like to talk about the LP's I've bought recently?

I forgot to mention a couple of Minutemen records in there, plus I've completed my trilogy of Abdou el Omari reissues.

^^^^^^^^^^^ "The Onehunga Shuffle": hands in pockets of jeans worn halfway down the bum, cap on backwards under a hoody with some random US sports team's logo on it, headphones the size of dinner plates & kicks the size of Besser blocks. Shoulders hunched, of course, and totally incommunicado 'cos it's all just sooooooooo boring, eh bro. The shuffle itself consists of randomly transferring one's weight side to side & back & forth. It's really quite beautiful when done well.

Just watched Kick Chase for this week. A bit of talk about us fans and how we are venting our frustration, Kafe and Kearns talking about how much the boys are putting in and maybe don't deserve all the critism.

I take their points but it does not elleviate the frustration. Such an amazing and inclusive game on and off the field, when I fell for rugby in the 80's it really felt like we were going somewhere, in the, 90's we were rocking and same in the early to mid 2000's. Since then the Reds and the Tahs lit a fire with Super prems but it never caught hold, same with the 2015 WC. This is the frustration for me, the boys worked so hard for that success but for whatever reason it was not consolidated on for even more success.

I'll be cheering for our boys to come out and kick arse this weekend. To help with the frustration, last weekend is a repressed memory now.

Further, and to this very point, when we as fans or rugby analysts or both look at a rugby player or team of players in action, we are really looking at two separate dimensions of time and space. These dimension unite in the moment of play, but they are different.

One is actually, physically what we see happening here and now with player x or team y. On the day, in the moment of immediate observation, how do they kick, run, tackle, swerve, work in pods, etc, etc. Do they do that well, not so well, or plain badly.

Two, and whether we acknowledge it or not, we watch just as much in that same moment of observation what might be called the embedded history of that player x's rugby life cycle to that very moment. Namely, the calibre and type of rugby institutional history player x has endured and been exposed to in terms of coaching quality and depth, nationally preferred modes of play (consciously or unconsciously designed and practiced over past periods of time), types of teams, support systems, physical training, team cultures and core values and so on.

Yeah I'm officially over last week's result. Notwithstanding that it was nowhere near good enough and there were way too many mistakes by both players and coaches on our behalf, it was not in any world anywhere near our worst loss and realistically could have gone either way. It was exacerbated by a few factors namely IMO:
- the code needs some good news
- experiments at the expense of experience
- last year's win/loss ratio
- the super rugby clusterfuck and our results within it
- etc, etc

I think we will come out with a vengeance and absolutely pump these blokes, but it won't really mean much unless it turns out to be a proper turning point, and that we won't know until August.

So sack Grey, Larkham, Ledesma, Byrnes and Cheika tomorrow.
Who do you bring in?

You'd think that the 'powers that be' might be keeping a finger on the pulse of this. But hey, that's probably too much to expect.

In the mean time, if you are serious, I know you are not, it would be perfectly cognitavely reasonable to think that we can find a domestic coach grouping, on a one-off that could give a boost. On a one off basis.

Or we could bring in a decent strategist. I can think of a couple, but what is Chook Fowler up to at the moment?

Cheika, Larkham, and Grey - SHOULD be under stress. Long term. And right now, in the run up to every single test. Every single fucking test.

This is as good a place for that as any.

We upgraded our 'GA' tickets to 'Gold' in section 304. We won't be troubled by the setting-sun!!

I am going. Actually went for Platinum tickets as they are same price as I usually pay for Bronze at the Bledisloe/Boks Tests.

All GA behind the goals I think. Would expect the 334-338 corner to be the most popular.

Looks like Platinums are nearly sold out now.
