Not sure who the referee was in yesterday's game at Newington but the decision he made to award the try to Angus Bell, who lost the ball out on the full, was terrible. I don't want to bag Ref's but first he was in no position to make the call he did - he was 10 to 15m away, second he never even looked at the AR, who actually was perfectly positioned (and put his flag up) and third he then proceeded to over rule the AR. Fortunately nothing turned on his decisions.

I have seen the footage and it's poor refereeing for someone at this level.

Apparently moments before the game, his mum just called to say "I love you". That try (worst decision I have ever seen & refused to listen to the linesman), some of those penalties & the yellow card (??).

Honestly, I thought it was Stevie Wonder out there & I was looking forward to the half time entertainment.

With Newingtons lose to Joeys on the weekend this means they have now lost to every GPS first XV this year. With 10-15 players receiving some kind of bursary/ scholarship this makes for a 400-450k expenditure. Perhaps time for a rethink out there at Stanmore.

With 21 players in year 11, for either 1st or 2nd XV they are investment for 2018. There was always a feeling that 2017 would be a lean year for our 1st XV despite some promising results against SIC W29-20 and KGS 29-17. Despite the losses New have managed to score about 3-4 tries against most opponents. So the weakness lies in their defence which can be taught, learnt and practiced particularly in the off season. If the results are repeated this time next year, the point you make will have creditability.

However, with these players returning possessing 1st & 2nd XV experience, together a good 16A side, I believe 2018 has the promise to be a more rewarding one than 2017 for Newington. Hence, I believe Newington will have the potential to challenge, both Kings and Joeys who are likely to be potential favourites for 2018.

Subject to the format of the 2018 comp, I think Scots would be favourites.
Kings and Joeys have a number of players in year 11 and given how tight the contests have been between these 3 this year the difference may be who hosts matches in 2018.

Newington will need to improve on their fitness levels to be a serious contender next year.
Visibly tired in the last quarter of the match against Scots.
Some of the big boys in the pack carrying too much weight, struggling to get around the park. Leaner and fitter they could be a real force.

Good to see the competition is evening up again. Can we bring back the BIFF yet? Or are the 'PC' thought police going to tell us we can't enjoy our rugby!

My belief that Joeys and Kings are teams to beat in 2018, stems from their strong performances as 16As in 2016. Although, the largely Year 11 Newington, 2nd XV have beaten them both this year. Yes, we do play Kings this Saturday and I will be interested if Newington, can repeat the Pre-Season results in the 16As W55-17 and 2nd XV W27-5. But we are playing TKS on their home ground and improved performances can be expected from TKS.

All GPS 1st XV matches kick off at 3:15, however for View and Joeys the crowd is huge, so to get a seat I recommend being there for the start of the 2nds (2:00) or possibly halfway through the 3rds (1:30ish).

Parking around HH is a nightmare however and the same rules apply; earlier the better. Usually 3-4 streets away from the college or sports grounds should net you a park. Armchair Selector could probably help you more with this.

First XV kicks off at 3.15.

There is angled parking on the perimeter of the park but a warning. road works have reduced the amount available.

Unless you get there before 1, you will be disappointed if you want to park at the ground.

My tip would be to park in the streets on the other side of Ryde road and walk across. 2-3 blocks max.

Or get there early, grab a coffee and or lunch either at the ground or in Hunters Hill proper before heading to the park.

Note seating will be sought after so another reason to get there early. Note the Joeys students sit in the stand. Riverview students are allocated the temp seating on the southern side of the field.

All supporters can use the seating on the pavilion side outside the roof area. Traditionally Joeys parents sit near the "Rowers BBQ" at the Eastern end of the ground. Away teams at the western end.

Note the famous Jacks Bar will open on the closing whistle of first grade. This is a wonderful institution run by the Joeys Old Boys. ALL supporters from BOTH schools are welcome to join in the celebration of the season and catch up with old mates.

Looking forward to a big crowd to celebrate the closing of the 2017 season.

Both teams are coming off strong wins ... and both teams, by my estimation have had patchy seasons , so both have a lot to prove

crowd should be big ... whether that is one positive of a 1 round comp?!

conditions should be conducive to Joeys upbeat tempo ... a good fast game

Unless I am mistaken, Riverview's star breakaway Rorke is the only player to make GPS 1sts,

So Rorke is the single biggest star .. and only Aussie Schoolboy playing

... although several others leapfrogged into higher Rep honours (Dowling into NSW 1s and Reilly into Combined States), and I think Joeys maybe a bit hard done by

so game will feature a number of NSW players, with Joeys having Dowling, and View having Rorke, Bell, Easy

so key match ups - scrum halfs ....Dylan Dowling v Grant

backrowers - Quinn v Rorke

centres - Reilly & Ryan v Easy/Bell

hookers - Heaven v McLennan

although Armchair no doubt will know who is in and out - injury-wise ... or who is playing in different positions

I agree that Joeys and Kings will be strong in 2018, but with the tendency for some schools (not all, in 2016 anyway) to play kids of u16s age up a level, i dont think 16As results are a strong indicator of future 1st XV potential anymore.

Take Scots 2016 u16 age group for example. Jeremy Williams, Will Harris and Brett Wellington were all u16s age in 2016 and all played mostly in opens, mostly in 2nds, although Will Harris played a couple in 1sts as well.

All benefited hugely from that experience and have been dominant performers this year, all making NSW 1 or 2 .

Yep agree SDW. Both teams no doubt keen to taking bragging rights. Having dominated their trial encounter and 2 narrow losses against Scots and Kings, Joeys would be favoured. But who knows with Schoolboy Rugby!

Riverview's star breakaway Rorke is the only player to make GPS 1sts

Views Angus Bell played GPS1 against CAS and CHS according to GPS website.

Joeys Tristan Reilly played GPS1 against CHS according to GPS website.

Reilly should consider himself unlucky to miss selection in either Australian Schoolboys or Barbarians. Hopefully one of those final 3 spots may fall his way.

Rorke only ASB selection playing

SDW I have no intel on injuries or who is playing where.

Everleigh and Ryan were in the centres V New and Reilly was at FB. Seemed to work well against New.

Bourchier has been playing #2 for Joeys and View may still be having nightmares of his line breaks last time they played.

Heaven I suspect will be at 6. But he has played 2,3,6 and 7 in the firsts this year so stay tuned.

Hopefully weather remains as forecast and we get a sunny day to wrap up the season
