I think Neville has gone overseas, they've signed U20s locks Hockings and Blyth.. lock is an area of strength for the Reds with Rodda, Tui and Douglas, although an injury or two could change that.

THP is the primary area of concern for next year, Tupou is the obvious candidate but need more then that.

Outside back is an area which could use a bit of a clean out, wouldn't mind getting Banks back from the Brumbies, and maybe some other options for centre in place of Taefu and CFS.

Backrow must have some vacancies wth Tui and Houston both gone, I'm not convinced Gunn is suited and maybe even loss so under the new ruck interpretations.

Simmo's contract was up and the Reds chose not to renew. I can only wish him well, he was a great servant for us and unlike other's who've joined the Tahs from the Reds, I wish no ill will towards him.

I dream of a shakeup in the Reds coaching staff for 2018.
I dream of Brad Thorn as head coach and defense coach That man has so much experience & respect from the players and I believe can shortcut straight through to the HC role, with Tony McMahon as his mentor.
I also would like Phil Mooney back as attacking coach. His abilities to put into place attacking strategies were very noticeable and which McKenzie inherited in the Reds when he took over.
The Reds really do need a shake up, and personally, I don't believe its the players that are to blame, so who does that leave? Huh?

Personally, I hold responsible those who keep appointing inexperienced and inappropriate head coaches

It stems from this article, suggests there's still a chance Stiles may not be head coach in 2018 with the end of season review still is underway, with Brad Thorn considered an outside chance to be head coach in 2018. Confirmation Tony McGahan starts at Ballymore next Monday, and Phil Mooney is been looked at as a potential assistant coach to work on attack.

Tony McGahan does nothing for me, I don't see what merits he should be signed on. I think they Reds will maintain status quo for head coach in 2018, can't see them sacking Stiles midway through a contract, they can't afford it.

Phill Mooney is an interesting option though, wasn't a successful HC but I still think he did a good job in developing the attacking ability of the team in 2009 which laid the foundations for Link and the 2011 championship.

I would love to see Brad Thorn as 2018 coach. He strikes me as the type that can really pull the group together, install the right culture and command the respect of his side. I think he is the sort that will empower his players to take ownership of how they play in an all inclusive manner. Not a shred of evidence to suggest he isn't the type to command respect. I would be 110% supportive of the Reds going out on a limb and having a punt on him.

Thorn to pick his own assistants but Mooney would be a good addition as attack coach.

Why do people want Brad Thorn as Head Coach?

The ONLY head coaching experience has been with the QLD Under 20s this year and a couple of weeks with QLD Country.

That would be a disastrous pick I reckon.

I would genuinely prefer Richard Graham back.

It reeks of a player's choice.

Thorn talk is quite frankly, laughable.

Guy was (IMO) the best player ever in Union and not far from the top in Rugby League but holds no REAL experience in a HC role. If he aspires to a HC role then he needs to cut his teeth fora few more years.

Would much rather Stiles as HC with Thorn as Assistant.

If we are being fair dinkum Thorn shouldn't be anywhere near a Super Rugby team yet in any role. We were terrible in contact this year as it was and his old-school techniques don't work (and drive the few quality/experienced coaches in the program away). Don't for a second think he wasn't responsible for a few issues in the HP team this year.

It would be a nice irony however if Stiles got the knife for this guy given he sided with him over more experienced heads.

I'm not suggesting Mick Heenan should be HC (maybe he should be) but it looked really strange in all the NRC media to have guy who has a truck load of experience and success as the 'new guy' while the guy with maybe less than 15 games coaching experience in his life as the old hand.

McGahan hiring makes Grahams re-appointment look like the greatest decision ever. The guy has just been responsible for the worst Australian Super Rugby side in history and the worst Australian Super Rugby defence in history and instead of saying, go take a few years off, head overseas and learn something, we hire him.

The Rebels results should see him black balled for a few years and have to earn another shot. The fact he sat there in the press conferences and cowardly blamed the looming threat of the Rebels being cut, while the Rebels always maintained they were safe (and while the Force didn't use it as an excuse while actually being under the knife), suggests he should be blackballed for good.

Thorne didn't really spend that much time with the Reds in 2017, he didn't tour with them and his involvement at training was limited, they had his priority as the U20s team. That been said, he isn't qualified for HC, i think this is just a media beat up by Wayne Smith.

Ultimately I think Stiles will be retained, Thorn will shift from U20s HC to Reds Assistant Coach, Arnold or Mooney as attack coach, and a new defence coach brought in.

Thorn cannot be coach - he has just started a positive pathway. Mentoring soem young Reds forwards, working with QLD u20s and NRC.

Do this more then once! THEN be in consideration next time the Reds Forwards Coach is up for grabs. Do this successfully for a few years, then be spoken about in HC terms. Our biggest problem in AUS is that our Super Teams (which is supposed to be the strongest provincial comp in the world) is where Aus coaches get their first stab at being professional coaches.....it's ridiculous.

I'm having a laugh. To be serious for a moment I agree with you it's just that I'm trying to have a joke considering next year is gonna be hard to get through. All the best for Simmons

I don't think any reds fans actually hoped for any thing but a positive outcomes for Simmons, say what you like about his style, but he has been a no nonsense player for the Reds the past 8 years. But like mentioned early in the seasons some tough decisions were coming with the rise of Rodda and Tui. If Douglas and Simmons both had contracts expiring this year, I would have preferred Douglas go.. but that's the nature of pro sport I guess

RE the coach for next year. Guess we'll have a better idea who the contenders are by observing who is lingering around the Ballymore carpark tomorrow after the NRC. Might put my hand up as well, if I camp out and out last the other blokes, that will mean I am the coach?

Good luck in 2018 Simmons and thanks for everything you have done for us. Onwards and upwards for you mate, rekon go to Japan in 2019 for the WC, the younger locks will need your guidance on the biggest stage.

Remember to have a few years seeing the world as well when you done here in Oz.
