What is the biggest mistake made with Australian Rugby?

Anyone who posts the version Ive heard will probably be banned

He had a girl back to his hotel which broke team protocol.

That's the official version. I hate that we throw the baby out with the bathwater in Aus Rugby.

Tuqiri gets jiggy with it on tour? JOC (James O'Connor) and Kurtley get a late night feed? Sack them!!!

A Smith gets jiggy with it in an airport bathroom? Kaino's doing the horizontal dance in his team hotel room? Better fly back home to sort the missus out lads but be quick about it, we need you back in the 23 ASAP.

Don't know what the unofficial version is though?

Feel like something more might've been going on there.

Still irks me that Rogers pinched a stack of fullback caps and starts away from my all time fav players Chris Latham.

To be fair, Latham didn't really hit his stride until 2004...........

And Roff was actually the fullback for the first few tests of that year until injury.

So we are all in agreement. The greatest mistake in Australian rugby was starting Rogers ahead of Latham at fullback in 2004.

A line in the song you’re the voice will give you a hint

Got it.

No wonder he won the unfair dismissal battle.

God we're far off track, I'll try to bring it back:

Biggest mistake in Australian Rugby history is the fucking ARU settling out of court with everyone on everything and just gifting away $ following their own ineptitude.

A lot of thata was cause he could kick goals - pretty essential with Larkham at 10

Not really....... Flatley was our goal kicker at 12, or Mortlock, and Burke was in and out of the starting lineup.

In fact, Flatley and Burke were our cente combination for a number of games while Mortlock was injured........

I certainly don't think Wendell Sailor was worth $700,000 way back then. Supposedly that is what he was on. Had to have been the biggest salary in the world at the time. Hell Charlie Piutau just became the highest paid player at a million pounds a year some 10 years later which isn't that much more. So you may have a point. Just don't think Tuqiri in particular is a good example.

1m English pounds are worth about $Aus1.7m at present exchange rates. Quite a good bit of moolah more than $700k in my books, even allowing for inflation in the intervening years. However, I do agree that Wendell was overpaid at $700k pa. He did lay on a good try or two in the 2003 RWC though.

The value of a player like Wendell should not be underestimated. His signing caused huge media interest. Free advertising, in other words.

Was he worth it? It is a hypothetical question. Who knows?

The thing about these debates is that nobody knows what the alternative scenario would have looked like.

Yeah that's a fair point. Plus the goal kicking as someone else mentioned.

Nah, Rogers wasn't selected for his goal kicking......... as I mentioned above there were other notable goal kickers in the team.

And I didn't even mention Giteau and Roff.

In fact the only time Rogers was used as a goal kicker prior to Latham taking over at fullback was against Namibia in the 2003 RWC.

.

On that basis we should sign a Kardashain up to the Wallabies. Doesn't matter how much advertising you get free or paid for, it's not going to help the Wallabies win the Bledisloe. Now winning the Bledisloe now that would really be free advertising and media interest! PS - By the way it wasn't really free advertising as a ridiculous salary was paid to Wendell, he disrespected the sport with his drug taking and is all about rugby league in his retirement

I think Tuiqri proved his value, he was a world class wing for a while there..but ARU still had him signed on an enormous contract towards the end once his form had started the downward trajectory, another reason they were all too happy too allow his misdemeanour serve as a means to terminate his contract.

Sailor never really found his groove in rugby union IMO, he was good but never as good as he was in the NRL and the negative press associated with his exit from the game needs to be factored in when assessing whether his contribution was a positive one or not.

Given between them, Rogers and Tahu they earned a collective few million dolllars of ARU money, I think it's fair that the rugby community question that investment, and whether it would have been better invested elsewhere.

Of course it is "fair" to debate the merit of decisions taken 10 or fifteen years ago.

But what on earth is the point?

"Living in the past" Jethro Tull. Or, to put it another way, "The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there".

Funnily enough, the game was booming when those "mistakes" were made.
