Wallabies and Reds utility back Karmichael Hunt might not be out of the woods yet, with Queensland police issuing a statement yesterday refuting claims that the cocaine possession charge against him had been dropped.

Hunt was arrested in the early hours of December 30 in Fortitude Valley and charged with possessing cocaine and a prescription drug, Xanax, without a prescription. Subsequently, a third charge of contravening a police directive — for not reporting in time for fingerprinting — was added.

Last Friday, however, Hunt’s legal team announced that the cocaine charges had been dropped for lack of evidence, which seemed to change the whole equation for the embattled three-code star.

There was no confirmation from the Queensland Police that this was the case, however, and in response to The Weekend Australian’s inquiries, issued a statement that Hunt would face the full range of charges when he faced court in Brisbane on February 19.

“The Queensland Police Service can advise that no charges have been withdrawn in relation to this matter at this time,” the statement read. “Any discontinuance of matters associated with prosecution would formally occur before the court.”

The statement leaves open the prospect of some courtroom negotiations but certainly the fact that Hunt will now face his second cocaine charge in three years — he was fined for possession in 2015 but no conviction was recorded, while suspended for six matches by the Reds and docked $30,000 — is the worst possible news for him. It leaves open the prospect of Rugby Australia tearing up his newly-signed million dollar contract.

That can be read a couple of ways.

The charges haven't been 'officially' dropped yet and will only occur once they appear back in front of the judge next Monday. That's not to say there isn't an understanding from the QPS that the charges will infact be dropped next week.

OR you could infer that the QPS are going full stem ahead and will charge him with the cocaine offences.

So disappointed as huge fan of being in the war for star athletes and raiding NRL like NRL does with our schoolboy stars.

As we have a few successes but inevitably end up with some league controversies - think Wendall Sailor, Tuquiri and now Hunt.

I think we need to still look at competing in the war on talent...e.g. look at the Koroibete acquisition which many early on doubted and now proving successful move but equally need to make it clear our code of conduct means we won't tolerate NRL stars coming over to take the piss.

Hunt needs to go it seems as not the role model we need with his drug habits....another sad Ben Cousins case who has seen drugs destroy his career and life...hopefully this is the wake up call for him to at least salvage what is the rest of his life and not continue to fall like Ben Cousins has post football.

Couldn't disagree more with this comment, support the kids that want to play rugby put their heart and soul into and love the game for what it is, not the carpet bagger's. Rugby hasn't got the money to going raiding anyway and in the past it hasn't ended well.

Agree wholeheartedly. As I've said before on here I understand that his "playing mates" don't want anything to do with the bloke in a personal capacity. Something about Risk and Reward

I don't think you can compete for NRL stars and be puritanical about it.

Also, the suggestion that this highly successful athlete has destroyed his life with drugs is complete hyperbole.
