Waratahs 2021

Drew - I don’t think your comments are really reflecting the general theme of this discussion.

This discussion was specifically about the characters in the game who could be used to promote the game. IMO these guys all fit the bill. They have good humour and a bit of character.

What they do on the field is a completely seperate issue. No one is suggesting that they are going to get preferential treatment at the selection table because they might be marketable.

Nor are any of us suggestion that having a few characters is a substitute for exciting, attacking rugby. People aren’t going to watch rugby just because they think HJH (Harry Johnson-Holmes) does a good interview. But nor can you turn new/casual viewers into supporters and regular paying members without connection with them. Having some characters around the game does help and is part of the mix. There is a reason the teams marketing departments put out all those interviews and promos around the players themselves. Most fans want to feel connected with the players. But I don’t think any of us suggested this is more important than the quality of the actual play.

On the specific point of attractive rugby though I would suggest front rowers can bring guys through the turnstile through their play as well. Slipper & Sio have their moments. Pone Fa’amausili is pretty entertaining; even if he is a bit raw (actually - probably because he is quite raw). And, to bring it back to the Waratahs specifically, Angus Bell is good to watch and so too Tom Horton.

You only need to think of one man, the badger who did it off the feed probably more then on it (but was great on it too..). wonder if Channel 9 can get him in the box for some badgers insights on games..

I don't know who the other characters in the team are, but I agree HJH (Harry Johnson-Holmes) fits that bill well. Not the Tupou superstar on the field thing, but the character who can engage people. Big red-headed bloke from the country, comfortable in front of the camera, great sense of humour and plays in a band. If you can't market that get a new PR firm.

New unpaid intern you mean ..

If Tahs need any Argentines here’s the remaining Jaguares without a contract. Some quality in that mix, 2/3 of these with some up and coming Aussie talent would be a good mix.

I am not sure they have exclusive rights to the field either so it might be part of the deal with UNSW.

Yes. This will also provide seating for UNSW sport.

There is already some seating next to the other field that is part of the existing structure there.

This will provide seating adjacent to another field at Dave Phillips.

Subbies finals will feature at Daceyville for some time to come, no doubt. Having two fields is essential for Week 1 finals at the very least, then you can have multiple divisions running.

An enclosed venue ensures that ticketing can be managed correctly as well.

2 level facility, ground floor is allocated for the HPU(Gym, Medical Room, plunge pool, media room, change rooms etc). 1st floor will be Administrative facilities for NSWRU/Waratahs including industrial kitchen.

Pretty impressive facilities and massive improvement on the demo tables they’re currently training out of, will easily be on par with the Brumbies who currently hold the crown for best facilities for the Australian Super Rugby teams.

Looks very good.

With Ballymore upgrade funding, the newish Rugby Australia facility, and the Victorian state rugby centre in the works all of our teams should have first class facilities going forward. Also shows we are still receiving plenty of federal or state financial backing
