Yea I don’t think I’ll be paying for yet another streaming service if it goes to Optus, already have Netflix, Stan, kayo and Disney plus unfortunately Optus doesn’t offer anything else of use to me

Anyone have an idea on the costs associated with running a vertically integrated live sport streaming operation for a couple hundred matches a year? I bet it's a lot.

Closet thing I can find is a streaming 10 year media deal with the J-League in Japan... its across 3 division and for 10 years...

200 million per year... The same group DAZN are looking as I understand at Australia with both rugby and soccer under consideration.

https://www.jleague.jp/en/news/article/6465/

The J.League on Wednesday announced a 10-year, $2 billion domestic broadcast contract with Live sports streaming service DAZN, owned by Perform Group.
The deal, which is set to begin in 2017, will see DAZN offer live broadcasts of all MEIJI YASUDA J1, J2, and J3 Leagues matches.
Founded by Perform Group, the world’s largest digital sports content and media provider, DAZN’s high-quality streams are available through multiple platforms including PC, mobile, tablet, televisions, and video game devices.
By leveraging Perform Group’s experience and cutting-edge technology, the J.League will work to produce exciting and high-quality match broadcasts.
Additionally, the J.League, DAZN, and NTT Group will work to outfit J1 League home stadia with WiFi technology in order to provide attendees with an improved match day experience.
Details regarding DAZN, including prices and subscription methods, will be announced later in Summer 2016.

It is the outcome of the "foxtel bad" narrative.

We had a provider who curated a selection of stuff.

Everyone whinges and moans, a new provider provides a cheaper, but not great service. We slowly work out that we need more providers to get the coverage we want

We end up spending near the same, if not more, to get that coverage we require.

And then in a couple of years I expect we will have some new service. or a consolidation of these new providers that curates\has a monopoly again

It is the circle of life

Unless you care about sport, Foxtel is bad......... but then you’d just get Kayo and save money.

I ditched Foxtel’s streaming services months ago, because it is significantly more expensive for what they’re providing which for me was strictly HBO content.............

I don’t care about other sports and never had that package, and yet for just the premium drama/movies package I was still paying the same amount as three other better quality streaming services combined, which between them have the same film selections as Foxtel.

I cant speak in general terms but personally i would be happy for rugby to go to Optus. I use it for the EPL and its quite good.

Is there any reason to have fox for other stuff? Arent most NRL and Cricket events televised FTA?

Plenty of other excellent sporting events only available on Fox. World cycling circuit, MotoGP for example. Won't be getting rid of Foxsports any time soon.

Anyway, I hope Super Rugby goes to Optus, it will mean we can clear the fossils off the commentary team.

This is the best part of the whole deal.

Had a look at Optus sports to see what's on it, beside Soccer there is nothing.

I have already opted out of Kayo because the only European rugby games are the English league. No channels on Foxtel showing Heineken Cup is a joke.

Real way to promote Union in this country, especially over the last few months would have been to continue the 24/7 Union channel with the Guiness Pro14, French Top14, English Premiership and European Cups. Enough content to fill a channel and would keep a lot of Rugby fans interested all year round.

I would not mind even watching some of the Japanese league.

Yep, and we do that occasionally. But we have a Yamaha Aventage Receiver driving a couple of big (probably old-fashioned) JBL speakers, Foxtel is the source.

Plug the Foxtel into your TV via HDMI, and run the audio out from your TV to the amp. That way whatever's playing on the TV is playing on the amp, all for the cost of a 3.5mm to 2RCA cable from Jaycar ($12). Ridiculously easy and it works nicely for my Denon amp and Paradigm Monitors.

Yeah I cannot see myself subscribing to Optus just for rugby. Looks like rugby will become even more irrelevant across Australia on tellie.

How do you watch rugby now, and what else are you using that subscription for outside of rugby

Biggest issue about Optus, currently they broadcast the EPL but they don’t create any content of their own, they don’t have their own broadcast crews who specialise in broadcasting sporting games. This is where Foxtel runs a really smooth operation and is able to have teams located all across the country who can cover multiple sports, it’s a glaring hole in any Optus bid.

I'm in the same boat - I watch via Kayo, which has all the sport I like on there. Can't justify further outlay for Optus if it goes, I'll be back to trying to find YouTube replays!

Foxtel - I'll be pissed off that I lose the footy but I can't cancel it as I watch the cricket/movies/other stuff not available on FTA.

I could use mobdro but that's not exactly kosher.

If fox doesnt have the rights, theres gonna be whole lot of live sports broadcast people looking for work. Pretty obvious where they might land if optus picks up the rights.

Not really..........

If Optus got the rights they would outsource the production to the same company Fox Sports does.

NEP I assume? They've pretty much monopolised the Australian sports market.

Which is basically what I said? NEP does it (rugby coverage) for optus instead of fox.

So based on the article in the Australian today: https://www.theaustralian.com.au/sp...n/news-story/23b986cb5c531bb91fc57811de461426 the state franchisees were not told about the fall down in negotiations with Foxtel or that RA would walk from the table with nothing but a hope and a prayer and these franchisees represent the state unions, who RA reports to - and for Victorians, our state union owns our franchise, and we dont know how or how much we will be able to pay our players beyond 2020 - how can we fix contracts past that date? Incredible.

Unfortunately behind a pay wall, but in fairness to the RA they are still negotiating. An Optus deal may very well increase the money available, its not the RA fault if Fox are having second thoughts (lets not go into the state of the game). But even a rise in broadcast money is a huge risk, when 90% of your supporters are linked to fox sports. Maybe that's what Optus are eying off.
