The results for round 3 have yet to be posted so I'm not sure if the round was a washout or the person responsible has gone away for the weekend. Did Avoca play Gooch?

p.s what happened to the deadwood avatar?

Wednesday's Express said the whole round was washed out (not sure how that happened considering it didn't start raining until Saturday) and will be replayed over the June long weekend. There is a general bye this weekend.

The ARU decide to put another boot into Rugby in NSW Country.

http://www.portprint.com.au/rugbynew.../pageflip.html

Go to page 5 & see under title "Australian Rugby Union muscle flex disadvantages Country boys representative opportunities".

I have this posted under my Newcastle comp thread but I was wondering what CC folk thought about this. I'm going to try and have a chat with a dev. officer (my former coach) who is involved in the dev. of the CC, Hunter & upper hunter areas on what he thinks.

Typical ARU / NSWRU "development" attitudes. While they sit in their ivory towers in Sydney the grassroots of the game whither on the vine. People wonder why I refuse to support the Waratahs? They should just rename them (Eastern) Sydney now and get it over and done with as they don't represent the rest of NSW.

Doesn't look like any games will go ahead this weekend as it has barely stopped raining for 2 weeks straight.

Yeah, last week called off for the weather, but I received an SMS from 1st grade coach saying games on for tomorrow. Don't know that it will still go ahead when they look at it in the morn.

That article sounds ridiculous Seahorse. Having played for country as a youngster, that carnival is a great opportunity for young players to pit themselves against the best of the best in their age group. Why would the ARU want to have fewer player exposed to a higher level of rugby. Doesn't make sense to me, then again alot of the decisions the smart people make about our game don't.

A mate put me onto it a month or so ago and I find it interesting, especially the portrayal of Calamity Jane.

Interesting on the podcast that Matt Hodgson said he may come back to finish his career with Avoca as his mate is currently coaching the thirsties. Is his brother still coaching colts?

Sums up exactly how I feel. Although feeling pretty good right now having watched the Saders v Force, great game.

Well in terms of the article you'd have to talk to the people who create the "Rugby News" magazine here in Newcastle. They are closer to the in's and out's of rep rugby for boys/men more than I am and they havent been wrong yet. Still, I agree with you that it's right to question the source as always it never good to assume.

Ourimbah 17
Brett Cunningham, Matt Ropoama tries;
Anthony Eriksson 2 conversions, 1 penalty goal
defeated
Avoca Beach 16
Julian Bacigulupo try;
Matt Maloney 1 conversion, 3 penalty goals

Ourimbah caused a minor upset when they defeated the reigning Premiers Avoca Beach at Heazlett Park by 17 points to 16. As the scores indicate, it was a closely fought game throughout and both teams had their chances of victory. The win marks a great start to the season for Ourimbah who now remain undefeated and have accounted for both the Grand Finalist teams from last year in their first two games of the 2011 season.
The first half was a very dour battle. Despite the wet weather the ground was in quite good condition. Ourimbah kept the play totally in the forwards for the first 40 minutes. The forwards conducted a pick and drive format and this got them over the advantage line continuously. It was almost all Ourimbah in the first half. Avoca Beach were rarely able to get out of their own half. In fact there was only a short time when they did get into Ourimbah’s half and it was during that time that they were able to kick a penalty goal. Ourimbah did the same, and their penalty goal made the score 3 points all at the half time break. Ourimbah had the better of the first half but the score was still all square. Ourimbah had several good players. None were better than flanker Brett Marchant who was all over the paddock in defence and attack. He was well supported by prop Brett Cunningham. Cunningham was strong in the set pieces and also made his mark in general play. To Avoca Beach’s credit they defended well. Avoca tried to match Ourimbah in the forwards and probably did forget the spread the ball wide on occasions. It was a game almost totally played by the forward packs of both teams.
Avoca Beach gained control early in the second half. They were able to jump to a very handy 13 points to 3 early in the second stanza and it seemed they would continue on to victory. Their try was scored by a charge down and the general play was very close. Ourimbah got back into the match on the scoreboard when they scored a converted try to make the score 13-10 to Avoca and then scored another converted try to take the lead. Avoca Beach were best served by five-eight Justin Staben, flanker Rhys McLuckie and centre Tom Murphy. Ourimbah deserved this win and it does open up the competition this year. Avoca Beach will learn a lot from the match and they know it was a very close loss and they will come back stronger than ever. But it was to be Ourimbah’s day.

Northlakes 21
Sonny Moala, Brenton Law, Rohan McAuley tries;
Logan Hemopo 3 conversions
defeated
Woy Woy 7
Nick Garnett try;
Andrew McNamara 1 conversion
Northlakes gained a very creditable win over Woy Woy at Slade Park by 21 points to 7. It appears to be a relatively comfortable win but it was far from it. The scores were locked at nil all at the halftime break. Northlakes did score 3 converted tries in the second half to seal the win but two of the tries were intercepts, and one try was scored very late in the game. Woy Woy went close to scoring on several occasions and to see two 50 metre tries to the opposition when they themselves were on attack would have been heartbreaking. But Northlakes stuck in there, and with several players missing, will take a lot from the win. Best players for Northlakes were winger Rohan McAuley and centre Brenton Law, while for Woy Woy Nick Garnett had a fine game and was rewarded with a try.

Steve Bright 3 conversions, 1 penalty goal;
Denis Raft 1 conversion
defeated
The Entrance 10
Adam Vaughan try;
Luke McLenaghan 1 conversion;
Adam Williams 1 penalty goal

Terrigal scored a comfortable win over The Entrance at The Haven Oval by 36 points to 10. It was the Terrigal backs that won the game for the home side. They dominated the backline play and The Entrance had no answer. The struggle in the forwards was much more even and if anything The Entrance pack gained the ascendancy in many of the exchanges. Terrigal were best served by flanker Dave Crawford, five-eight Damien Woods and centre Steve Bright, who posted 17 points alone for the home side.

John Malu 2, Derek Peachey 2, Ishmail Liania tries;
Scott Hanley 4 conversions

Warnervale 7
Luke Dixon try;
Jarryd Lees 1 conversion
Kariong had a good win over Warnervale at Woongarrah Oval by 33 points to 7. Kariong only led by 12 points to 7 at the halftime break but the further the game went the more dominant they became. Kariong ran in 5 tries, and it was their backline that was the difference. Best for Kariong were backs Derek Peachey and John Malu who each scored two tries apiece, while Jarryd Lees and Josh Holman were in everything for the Warnervale side.

A couple of bug results this round with Kariong knocking over Avoca and Warnervale securing their second win in first grade (in the club's history - the first was against the Rams in 2009) over Northlakes. Congrats to the Wildcats as it looks like they have turned a corner and are starting to live up to their potential.

Great win by Warnervale over Woy Woy and hope they keep going with it. Up into 5th on the table. My old comrades in arms the Rams are having another season to forget after showing a lot of promise towards the end of last year, hopefully they can turn it all around and lift themselves off the foot of the ladder.
