hmm i recon give morahan a run at wing to cover davies. It will be good for him to get some experience and apparently he has loads of potential. Its a shame about davies tho i love a winger with loads of speed. If toua is a specialised fullback then give him a start to cover hynes! We need all the specialised fullbacks we can get. Will chambers imo by the end of the season will be the starting 13 or close to it but he still has a bit too learna and turinui is playing fine. So Chambers should stay on the bench as this gives the other guys some game-time and will keep them happy.

if Kingi is out too, as may be the case, then it might be a chance to chuck Jono Lance on to the bench. Or I guess Benny Tapuai.

I think you will find Tapuai is streets ahead of Jono in terms of selection. + Lucas can play 9 and 10

yeah, I know Lucas can play nine and ten, but if Walsh and Kingi are out, they won't dare go in with Lucas covering both positions. Fainga'a at least can cover 10, if desperate, thus Tapuai can cover 12 (and 10 at a pinch) but at least Lance is a specialist 10 (with experience at 12) and plays a game we might want to close out a game.

cant say im sold on Chambers, his really not the fast and his positional play is still not up to scratch.. If he gets caught out of position against the Chiefs he wont have the speed to fix the error, he will just be burned.

This game has banana skin written all over it for the chiefs. Just the sort of match, us chiefs supporters are well and truly used to us seeing.

Great trip to republic, back with 1 short of a full house, brimming with confidence and excitement.. yep, we'll lose!

Nope, I reckon you will flog us. Cooper has never played well against the Chiefs.

There will be 3 losses on the day.

The loss of players to injury (reds)
The loss of the game
The loss of a lot of uncontracted players

Is it correct or have I made this up in my head, that if you play 3 games or more from the academy in one season you automatically upgrade to a senior contract the following year?

Which would mean that Shatz would have himself a rookie contract at least, next season?

disclaimer; this could easily be a figment of my imagination.

Re: Reds v Chiefs

alright, I have put on my thinking cap and come up with this.

all four of these injuries are actually a blessing and there is a silver lining.

if all four players are out, the four that will come in for mind are Morahan, Toua, Tapuai, Lucas.

We want to keep the first three and either Kingi/Lucas.

What these injuries do is give these players an opportunity and show that they are not forgotten in QLD. While Davies has been fantastic in attack this season - he is not the complete package as his defensive game is well below the mark. If Morahan can see there are opportunities he won't be so quick to sign with Rodney. This is the same with Toua and Tapuai.
Start blooding them now Link, show the youngsters some love!

Conversely the down side of this argument is if these young players play well at super level (and I suspect they will because they are all immensely talented) it will raise the awareness of other scouts who may or may not have already been looking at them, and as they have already proven themselves at the level it will naturally raise there price tag.

This may be thinking too far into the future - but I really don't want to see us pillaged again. Actually let me rephrase when we are pillaged I want the parasites to only get what was surplus to our needs, now and in the future.

QR Reds' Ioane to miss Chiefs match with knee injury
Ioane - injured in Blues match
Wednesday, 3 March 2010

QR Reds and Wallaby back Digby Ioane has been left out of the Reds squad to fly to New Zealand this morning because of an injured knee, meaning Head Coach Ewen McKenzie will name an all new back three for Friday night’s round four Investec Bank Super 14 clash against the Chiefs in Hamilton.

The Reds had already lost fullback Peter Hynes (finger dislocation) and wing Rod Davies (fractured cheekbone) for the match and McKenzie had the option of taking a gamble on winger Ioane’s fitness or leaving him behind to rest his knee.

“The feeling is that it’s better to get it right. With the short turnaround (between last Saturday night’s game and the Chiefs on Friday night) and with the travel there was a lot of things conspiring against us to get him right for this weekend.

“There was an opportunity to leave (the decision) right until the game, but even then there would be some doubt, so we have left it so he can regain full fitness for the Western Force game (at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday, March 14).

“We’ve still got a lot of games to go. We could leave it right to the death and with no preparation go out there, but that could make the injury worse and we’d be having the same problem the week after.”

McKenzie will take a squad of 22 to Hamilton, which contains five changes from the squad that played Auckland: Ioane, Hynes, Davies, reserve backs Tim Walsh (broken hand) and Richard Kingi (hamstring) have been replaced in the 22 by Blair Connor, Ben Lucas, Luke Morahan, Brando Va’aulu and QAS Reds Academy back Ben Tapuai.

McKenzie expects to name his starting lineup tomorrow (Thursday), before the team has its final training session.

Half Lucas and outside back Va’aulu were regular Super Rugby starters last year and have 48 Super Rugby caps between them. Connor, Tapuai and Morahan all made their Reds debuts in 2009, while Morahan was also called up for the end of season Wallaby tour as an injury replacement.

A badly corked calf muscle suffered in the trial match against the Western Force kept Lucas sidelined for the early part of the season but he has bounced back strongly for the QAS Reds 2nd XV during the past month. Va’aulu also fought through some shin problems earlier in the year and is now hitting his stride.

The pair combined for the only try against the Junior Waratahs last Sunday, with Va’aulu the beneficiary of a pinpoint Lucas cut-out close to the line.

“There is some useful experience and depth in our backs. The new guys in the squad have been waiting in the background for an opportunity to stake a claim so this is their chance. They all train with the squad so they know what’s required,” McKenzie said.

“As far as who plays where, we’ll play around with the possibilities and finalise it closer to the game."

The squad is;

Forwards: Daniel Braid (vc), Adam Byrnes, Ben Daley, Saia Fainga'a, Sean Hardman, Scott Higginbotham, Greg Holmes, Leroy Houston, Van Humphries, Jake Schatz, Robert Simmons, Laurie Weeks

Backs: Will Chambers, Blair Connor, Quade Cooper, Anthony Fainga'a, Will Genia (c), Ben Lucas, Luke Morahan, Ben Tapuai, Morgan Turinui, Brando Va’aulu

So we will go into a Chiefs game v Donald and co with Toua, Morahan and Chambers? I wonder if this edges Vaalu in front.

Va'aulu is almost guaranteed to start.

Looks like MacKenzie is almost saying 'we ain't expecting to win, lets concentrate on beating the force the next week'. If the Chiefs play anywhere near there ability I can't see us getting close.
