Don't worry Macca, Michael Cheika is doing his fair share of recruiting for Randwick these days anyway.

The snouts tell me that a current Australian Schools player was offered a Tahs contract to be in a new U20 Super Rugby Comp. The player asked can he go back to his home club after Super 20s is done, to which Cheika replied, only if that club is Randwick. If it's not, then contract is off the table. The player then subsequently sigend a rugby league deal.

Did some research on this to confirm. I actually spoke to the player's manager. He confirmed there was NO league deal before the Tahs chat. The player in question actually prefers rugby over our toothless counterparts, however he does not like Randwick and wished to play for the club he began with. The manager also said that in all the discussions he had with several league clubs and 3 rugby franchises, the Tahs were by far the least professional in all chats.

If that is true , good on him. That means that Randwick should have a near Super 15 strength squad soon. Happy days.
Cheika will have to do lots of fast talking though as the Wicks only have 2 Super 15 players ATM if my memory serves me right, Horwitz & Kepu. The rest of the squad of 32 (or thereabouts) must have got under his radar...

And perhaps even more importantly, shouldn't he just be concentrating on getting the Tahs remotely near finals footy? It shouldn't matter to him which club the player plays for, just that the right player is in with as much of a chance as anybody on making the Tahs squad.

Knuckles - please explain how Cheika contradicts a notion of a strong club competition - you have lost me there.
Also, I am damn certain Cheika wants the Tahs to succeed more than anything else. I am sure he didn't take on the Tahs job so he could support Randwick. I bet he wants the Tahs to win and then take on the Wallabies job.
If he can use Randwick to support these objectives, that may be a fringe benefit for Randwick however am sure that he wont do anything to compromise his main objectives which I have presumed above.

Oh you spoke to his manager, It must be taken as gospel then.

Yeah, I must say I had a chuckle over that one. Suddenly we’re down to believing what a player agent says. In my very, very limited experience with agents, they do tend to look and act like a bunch of dodgy unethical spivs who would sell their mother for the next deal.

Given the poor opinion that many people have of player agents it's staggering that so many parents entrust the immediate future of their children to them when they leave school!

The people that don't like agents are those that don't use them or have to deal with them. The ones who like them are normally the ones who use them as in most cases the agent is trying to get the best deal (read most money) for the player (read includes agent) and has no interest in doing whats best in the opinion of everyone else. If I had the skills and talent that would interest most clubs then I would want someone representing me that I am confident will do the best for me and not the clubs or governing body.

I think people should read the players agreement that RUPA will only accept when players sign with managers and they will see that a manager does not get a cent until the player is earning something like 50+k
If a player signs with a non credited player manager for deals done in Australia then that player is silly as non RUPA accredited managers are not allowed to deal with the super franchises
That is my understanding
So if I am right managers make nothing to suggest a player leave club A and go to club B unless it is felt to be a good career move helping to get into Super rugby
Dealing with overseas clubs and league clubs is different as they are not governed by RUPA

Nick Ryan as Coaching Director brings a wealth of Sydney Uni & Melbourne Rebels experience.
With that, Wade Kelly as Head Coach will have more support this year.
Thought it was tough when, post match, Wade & his First Grade squad were seen packing up the ground still in their match kit.
John Muggleton as defence coach is a master stroke. He is one of the best in the world.
There is a heap of other specialists.
If Randwick can't pay players, it will at least be able to offer them the opportunity to get the best training going.

Muggleton a master stroke? Did you watch the Rebels play last season? No doubt his record with the victorious '99 RWC winning Wallabies will stand the test of time but that was 14 years ago and I think we'd all agree the game has changed dramatically.

I've always thought it was strange that someone who never played a game of rugby union (as far as I know he only played league) ended up as defence coach. He may know how to tackle but I'd suggest positional play in defence is much more important in union than league and this is where most league converts seem to struggle. In league the game stops at every tackle and everyone lines up across the field.

Am surprised at the reaction to Muggleton however accept what people are saying. Interestingly enough, another Mungo is also a prominent Rugby defence coach. Les Kiss was coaching the Saffers & is now Ireland. That might explain something. And he was a winger...

Defence was not a strong point for Randwick 1st grade so he can't do any worse

Lets remeber that Muggleton has now been associated with Rugby for about 15 years. More than enough time to pick up how rugby teams attack. I know he played league but I owuldn'y claim him to be a recent convert.

Also didn't the brumbies use or want to use some league guys as consultants on defence this year (Buderis and Smith). They must think that leaguies have something to offer in this regard
