Harris is not quite there fitness wise. Connor is getting ready for the international 7s circuit - think he is one of the Wicks best so will be missed, Mind you, the form of Baldwin & JJ cant be faulted this year - Baldy seems a much better player this year.

5th grade- Gentlemen from several decades playing a good spirited match with Easts who took the win on the back of good defence.
4th grade- Though Wicks got the win they tried desperately to lose in the last twenty. Easts had a special 15 with speed and slice.
3rds - A good win by Easts against a side that on paper should give any team a headache. The inside backs for Wicks need lots of work and why throw a cutout when you have a 4 man overlap on attack?
Reserve grade- Very sorry to see Harrod taken away with what looks like a broken ankle. from all accounts he is a great player to be alongside.
Firsts - A very good win built on speed in every facet. Good to see several young guns get a run as well as the 'beetle' who did not look out of place.
Next week should be interesting.

No standouts in Wicks 1sts win yesterday -- the whole team (including replacements) played well and the combination between backs and forwards was a revelation.

They certainly look a different team with Horwitz at the helm and his goal kicking is improving as well. For a 20 year old to be given the captaincy as well as running the team from 10 plus the goal kicking says heaps about his maturity and the respect he's obviously held in at Coogee.

It's interesting that although there are some new players at the Wicks this year eg Coupland (from Gordon), Taripo (league), Latinipulu (Newington -- 1st year out of school), Faleallii (Newcastle/West Harbour?), Talakai (NZ) who have all added to the mix, some of the guys who struggled to make 1sts last year (eg Baldwin and Parsons) have suddenly become 1sts fixtures and the young guys up from last year's 1st Colts (eg Vea, Kennedy, Hanigan, Johnson) have all blended into a well oiled machine. How much credit is due to the new coach and how much to the work of the Kelly brothers over the last couple of years?

Very impressed with the young Waratah's Japanese-South African signing Kotaro Matsushima. I hadn't seen him before but he worried the Wicks' defence all day and he was heavily involved in both Easts tries. Definitely the standout in a well beaten side.

Colts2 ranking above grade 3 at home games is seriously pissing off many of the club stalwarts
Will it transfer to the games this week?

Given the fact we used to have 5 grades playing on Saturdays at the same ground I'm not sure why we can't have 4 grades plus Colts1 on the same ground with Colts2 and Colts3 playing at Latham. Unless maybe the council won't allow it???

Randwick seem to be playing with more physicality this season. Last few seasons definitely had some skills just it was like watching touch footy under Kelly.

Speaking to players not long after the match on Saturday a unanimous point was that Manly was the most physical team they have played this year.
Given that Manly got away to a very quick start, the team did well to hold for most of the game. Definite improvement and not that far off the top gun teams.

To have held Manly to only 5 points in the second half was a big achievement. At 29-3 at half time I was expecting it to get very ugly in the second half. The big down side is that we never really looked liked scoring a try.

Another positive is that we won everything other than 1st grade and without the U20 rock stars most of whom have been playing grade rather than colts. Congratulations to the 6 who've been selected in the Aust U20's world championship squad ie Tui, Kellaway, Hanigan, Croke, Kamp, Deegan. We won't see much of them between now and the end of June.

Yes well done, it was a good day.

2's was interesting - we were minus 4 locks, and 2 x 8's and this impacted our continuity at set piece. If we took our 4 kickable shots at goal in the first half it would have been 13 / 12 at the break. Instead we went for the line out and the changes in the 8 hurt continuity and we turned the ball over.

We didn't take one shot at the sticks, only leaked one try against the best for and against in the comp - and have allot more in the engine.

I reckon Manly will take allot outa that game, and be a whole heap better for it - a rare occasion you can say a loss maybe better than a win.

2nds was the only game at Coogee which was evenly contested and in doubt well into the second half. The best goal kicker in the Wicks (Tom Hiddleston) is playing 2nds and he is kicking for goal from everywhere up to about 55m and it paid off on Saturday.

Fantastic Effort !!
The Wicks selections will be a challenge when this lot are back! A lot of 6s & 8s to play.

Tis a good effort indeed, and Wix must be getting excited in the prospect of taking out Club Championship from the Corporation.

One of the challenges the Wix will face in the next few years is how to accommodate all the talented aspirational players they have recruited, or who have self recruited.

Super Rugby can only accommodate so many rookie players each year, and sooner or later some top level players are going to go for a walk across town to get more regular first grade games and "face time" before the clipboards. They are smart enough to understand that if they were to stay at Coogee Oval, they faced the prospect of starting 2nd grade and riding the pine for the 1's behind the talented roadblock in front of them. For those with aspirations of a pro/semi pro athletic career, that assessment may see them march across the road (or the equator) to clubs where they stand a better chance of regular first grade time.

I reckon that is one of the reasons why Angus Pulver jumped ship from The Corporation to the Beasts.

This is good for the Shute Shield. Warehousing talent in second and third grade is not healthy for the overall competition.
