I should have sprayed all the grease out of the wound with WD40? That would have helped, for sure.

Seems to have cleared up now, most of the redness is gone and there's only a scab left. Still a bit sore to touch, but much less so..

Contact cleaner would have been more effective at getting it out, but I guess wd40 will sub in when you haven't got anything else
