I like the idea of next coach actually being involved in the 2019 WC, also like the idea that even when extending Hansen's contract they have spoken to who they think will be candidates for the job (assuming that is Schmidt,Cotter,Joseph,Rennie and maybe Plumtree and Boyd) to let them know what is happening, allows these other coaches to settle into their roles that they now have and they can see how they go with the teams they involved with.

Tew didn't say involved with the AB at the next Cup, just involved with someone, so the door's still open if Rennie heads overseas & picks up an AC role with one of the second-rung teams.

Shag's official exit date is March 2020 which suggests that barring a disaster he'll pretty much hand-pick his successor, and that unless the wheels fall off between now & late 2019 it'll be Foster.

it'll be Foster.
It will be. A fuckin Tony Soprano lackey. Notebooks full of "what Wayne Smith said". Which will take a monster dump on NZ fans sense of fair play, especially Chiefs fans, oh God, why not just appoint Pat Lam and Hammett as his assistants and call it "The Unholy Triumvirate of Epic Super Rugby Fail 2000."

Rather than risk derailing/clogging the Olympics thread, I'll move this here.

[Original post from Olympics thread]

To compound all of that, the stupid decision by a bunch of suits to extend the All Blacks brand to the Sevens team (as well as the Maori and U20's) looks to have come back to bite them in the ass.

It has taken more than 110 years of blood, sweat and tears to build the All Blacks into one of the world's best sporting brands and just 15 minutes to inflict serious and lasting damage.

As headlines reverberate around the world telling of Japan's shock win at Rio, New Zealand Rugby will have to finally address its hugely unpopular decision to re-name the national sevens team the All Blacks.

Regardless of what the men's sevens team do next at the Olympics - even if they win the gold medal - the facts can't be changed that huge parts of the world believe the All Blacks suffered a humiliating loss on the biggest sporting stage of all.

The Japan Times and Reuters both used the term All Blacks in the headline of their reports on Japan's shock 14-12 victory in Rio.

.....

The All Blacks trade off their success to a significant extent: their sustained excellence is their unique selling point and worth an estimated $80 million a year in direct income which is close to 70 per cent of all the game in New Zealand's revenue.

That money comes from two major sponsorship deals with AIG and adidas, a handful of smaller arrangements with domestic corporations; broadcast income from Sky TV and ticket sales from tests.

It's the power of the brand that also opens the opportunity for the All Blacks to play in offshore venues such as Hong Kong, Tokyo and Chicago for large cash sums.

So potentially as far as huge swathes of the world are concerned, the "All Blacks" have lost to Japan, Great Britain and Fiji for the first time ever.

That's Gregor Paul's opinion today but wasn't necessarily his opinion yesterday or tomorrow, I'd say he's a serial bandwagon-jumper from way back but he's of the kind that tries really, really hard to be first aboard.

Here's another view, also from Aunty:

The truth, as always, probably lies somewhere between "the sky is falling" & "she'll be right, we'll just bung on some more duct tape".

If the 7s hadn't been rebranded the All Blacks, they still would of been called that when they got beaten anyway, as proved in the olympics where they played as NZ 7s not All Black 7s, when they played in 2010 etc almost all commentators referred to them as All Black 7s anyway, and that included here in Aus etc. It's like the New Zealand Maori team was ALWAYS the Maori All Blacks to all and sundry!!

The Beaugan has re-signed with NZRU, Hurricanes & Taranaki for three more years:

There were reports Tana was chasing him hard to go to the Blues so good on him for sticking with the sides that gave him his start. Esp good that he's staying with Taranaki, proof that you don't have to play for one of the Big Five to be an AB (it still helps, tho :)).

I'm sure he's peaked and it's all down hill from here. [wishful thinking]
