Reds 2020

I am thankful that Thor didn't do something stupid and get put out for a few weeks.

After halftime he was ready to kill someone in defence and forgot to use his arms but was not pulled up.

When he came on later as a sin bin replacement and they won the scrum, I thought I could see the red mist in his eyes and was getting worried he would go postal.

Really disappointing game tonight but at least we should not be able to get any worse!!!

How do we fix the lineout?

This will be a stupid question, but have 3 man lineouts been banned?

I cannot recall the last one I saw but at least if we lose a three man lineout, we have extra forwards to defend with.

Surely we need to try to change it up, I am always a proponent for throwing to the front, but we need to do something that makes the opponent have to adjust and think about what is happening.

Was talking about the lineout to my Friends, who claimed because Brad Thorn was a second rower, he should be all over coaching lineouts.

I disagree - To me, lineouts are as specialist as scrums or mauls. Brumbies and Reds lineouts are struggling. Brumbies have a pretty inexperienced selection of jumpers and backrowers who are not jumpers, relying heavily on Douglas when he does start. For Coaches, none of Mckeller, Fisher or Murphy have much IP in that area, though they are all forward coaches (scrum and maul heavy).

Reds have Thorn and Lilicrap - again neither coaches have strong history in that area as jumpers or throwers, and again the jumping options are limited and inexperienced.

Rebels - They have Geoff Parling as a coach who lineouts was his bread and butter, and the Waratahs have Simmons who has always been a leading lineout general in world rugby.

I'm sure its a combination of things. The Reds also lost their line out caller + another jumper. Not only did this have an impact on our overall height, but it caused a change to how the Reds operated at lineout time. Prior to the lockdown we had Rodda + Hockings/Blyth, LSL (Lukhan Salakaia-Loto) @ 6 and Wright at 7. Close to 4 jumpers. We're essentially down to LSL (Lukhan Salakaia-Loto) + Blyth + Wright/ASY (Angus Scott-Young).

We also don't have a jumper like Higgers who had an insane snap/jump to win us ball at the front.

Unfortunately with the Reds, I don't see much diversion/movement at line out time where you cause the opposition to move and stop marking you.

I can't remember if the rules have changed, but can't your '9' join the line out and lift/be a jumper any more? If not, I'd probably move our 9 to the front and have a Blyth or Wright insert themselves into the line wherever there may be a gap.

I dont recall things being particularly rosie with Blyth and Rodda though the situation has accelerated. I know that the Line Out has a lot of things going on and a bad line out can be down to any number of things. But right now I would start entirely with the throw. Get that sorted and we have something to work from. Both hookers need to be better.

At risk of taking the soft approach I am largely happy to put it down to that Dean. You are right - the occasional stinker is inevitable (and boy were they bad).

However, I add the caveat that the lineout has clearly been an issue all season - even when we had our full stock of locks.

As Dru said our issues very much stem from the throw - but I do feel like we are being read so easily that it’s putting a lot of pressure on the thrower at times.

Our lineout is simply appalling though, doesn’t help losing cattle etc - but it’s a disgrace.

Who even looks after the lineout? Anyone?

I fully expect them to bounce back, but I hope they are doing plenty of work on the hill this week.

Plenty of skills work and yes to work on the lineout. But they looked a bit shagged. Maybe turn down the dial on intensity this week?

Not sure, but probably put Fraser back at 7 and ASY (Angus Scott-Young) into the row. He’s not dynamic enough at 6.

Tate into 9.

Jock to full back, Hardy to the wing.

Mac Grealy / Flook to bench.

3 lineout sessions, and basic defence lessons. It’s easy to forget the basics.

Looks god to me. Sounds like you've done this before.

4 from 12 wins this year - it’s time to go Brad.

Who’s the alternative though? I don’t think the Reds are playing a bad style Of rugby, in fact it’s a lot better in terms of ball shifting than last year.

The players simply aren’t converting their opportunities. Thorn can’t help the fact that BPA AND Mafi can’t win a lineout at the moment, they’re both the best hooking prospects available. He can’t help the fact that for two weeks in a row Daugunnu; a probable Wallabies squad member has made some poor decisions in attack and handling errors.

??

COVID issues splitting the season.
Major assets leaving who had been important cogs for the year.
Building respect across the Aus clubs and being watched from afar.
Coaching staff removed in the process.

sunny one you seem a bit dark. But think you missed this completely.

Though I don't disagree a few more wins would help his case.

If BPA and Mafi can't resolve their throwing at least one must go to give someone else a a shot. I like them both, favour BPA, but if they can't throw it's over.

Since 2014 our wins per season have been - 5,4,3,4,6,6,4*

There is seriously something wrong in Reds rugby. A heartland.

This isn’t about Brad. Honestly. My issue (and this has been a long running issue) is with management and it’s inability to land good coaches.

Look over the history of Reds in Super Rugby and pick a third good coach after Knuckles and Link...
