Hmmm....

Saying positive things about the All Blacks character. Leaves me thinking that you now must be more confident about beating us & liking us a bit more.

Worrying, very worrying. Aussie sport seems to have these great years when you win EVERYTHING & so far 2011 has kind of gone like that. It's kind of like your a confidence country and one thing leads to another.

Fark.

In seriousness I've always had the greatest respect for Kiwis and the ABs and while I want nothing more than the Wallabies to beat you every single time we meet there is not even a tiny sliver of the hatred I reserve for whenever we play England. The ABs were always going to be my second team at the World Cup if we got knocked out.

All part of their cunning plan to make the refs give him the benefit of the doubt omg.

Seriously tho, the guy has been an ambassador for the sport for years, and is bound to go down in history as one of NZs greatest ever Captains and one of the world's most admired players.

IMO there are many many athletes around the world who do admirable things like this, often un-noticed, and it is a very very good thing.

Still looking forward to Pocock crushing him at RWC2011. All legends must come to an end.

Richie is a fabulous rugby player who is smart enough to take what the refs give him. I don't think there has been a more influential player in the game for the past 5 or 6 years, and there are certainly precious few of whom it can be said have represented their team with such grace and class.

I talked with a Test flanker a few years ago after he had just played in the Test backrow opposing McCaw and lost, and he was in awe of the NZ captain's freakish strength and engine. McCaw doesn't lift much weights at all; he prefers to put his time into functional strength and aerobic fitness and while he said McCaw really wasn't that big, he somehow possesses an unnatural core strength. Off the pitch, I've heard from sponsors and others who have had dealings with McCaw, that he is such a genuinely good and decent bloke and a pleasure to deal with at every level.

He'd always be first on the team sheet as captain in my pub XV.

Frankly, I think Pocock and Broussow's ground game is now better than McCaw. They are better pilferers of ball. But McCaw remains a much better link man and that aspect of a 7's game to support the ball has grown in importance over the past few seasons and frankly McCaw has revealed his greatness by adjusting his game to reflect that change in emphasis. For that reason, I'd pick him over any other 7 in the game.

This is from a few years ago but is pretty funny.

It was like he was training a small army at the end there with the kids doing the haka.

Nah, great video, brought a smile to my face :)

I think the main bullet point from this presentation is you guys can have Richie and the occasional trophy outside of rugby but you can f*@% right off if you're still trying to claim Crowded House.... You can have Russell back also.

I'd play Richie at 6 and Pocock at 7 in a world team.

That's one of the things I admire about McCaw. Really he could play any spot in the back three. I think his versatility is more effective than Pocock's specialist approach; Pocock is one of if not the premier openside in the game, but McCaw can apply in more roles more effectively.

Why all this comparison between Ritchie and Pocock? The difference in experience is to great for it to be significant. Both are wonderful players, period. What makes Ritchie from a wonderful to a great player is how he has managed to evolve how he plays and adapt to changes in officiating over the years. Today's Ritchie is not the same type of player that had those brilliant battles with George Smith for the ball a few years back.

The bloke is a complete champion through and through.

Rugby League World Cup. That's funny.

That world cup win would be the equivalent of Australia winning the bledisloe or trinations last year for that one game in hong kong. Hilarious.

Ritchie's value goes far beyond just the number on his back and his playing ability. Something I loved about his play last year was that when the ABs were on the ropes, Ritchie stepped up and led the team from the front. He called line-outs to himself, he carried the ball more into contact, made more tackles and just generally seemed to be everywhere. His leadership is second to none.

I think that Ritchie can play all 3 backrow positions because he has something Pocock doesn't (and it's something you can't coach): a bit of extra height. Ritchie has the linking and carrying ability to fill 6 or 8, and can jump a bit in the lineout (but not quite at the level you might want from blindsides these days). However, if you are pushing Ritchie to 6 or 8, you would want a bit of extra bulk in the other backrow spot to account it. Still one of the world's best players, in my book, and to me he's always seemed like a great guy. Always admired him.

Comparison is warranted, their two of the best opensides in the world.

Currently yes. Brussow has been out of action for the best part of the last couple of years or we would be talking about this as a three way battle and the youth of Pocock and Brussouw would be grounds for better comparison. I think Pocock is as good as Ritchie was at the same age and most likey be as good over the same period of time but only the future will tell. McCaw has upheld that standard for quite a few years now and that challenge still awaits both the young dogs.
