Probably a good thing (for the Olympics womens tournament) that England qualified in 4th. If the US had done so then a very weak team would have qualified from North America.

Going to be a tough battle between France, Russia, Spain and even Netherlands for the European spot.

Can anyone find official links for the next round of qualifying for the Olympics? The world rugby link is up at http://www.worldrugby.org/olympics however it has no details about the tournaments what so ever. Any details I have go have come from Wikipedia.

Here is some info for North America - http://usarugby.org/nacra-sevens#2015=home

A few links that should help

So the South American qualifiers were held this weekend. It was done in a straight round robin format. No finals.

No surprise to see Argentina qualify undefeated in the mens. But quite a surprise that Colombia qualified undefeated in the women's event. Apparently they did so in very dramatic circumstances with a try at the death against Argentina.

The 2nd and 3rd place getters have qualified for the final repechage tournaments. Chile and Uruguay in the mens, Argentina and Venezuela in the womens.

Men's European Qualification

http://www.rugbyeurope.eu/article-775.htm

Defending Champions France beat hosts Russia by 40-17 to win the first leg of the Rugby Europe Sevens Grand Prix Series at the Luzhniki Sports Palace in Moscow.

In a tense affair in glorious Russian sunshine, the French edged the first half 14-12 with tries from Brouahoua and Parez with replies from Oustroushko and Simplikevich for the Russians.

In the second half, France boasting a squad which included French international Fulgence Oudraogo, Remy Grosso and Marvin O’Connor pulled clear with four second half tries to the Russians one.

France had looked strong though out the weekend with big wins in the Pool matches against Romania, Georgia and Wales without dropping a point. With a 22-0 win over England in the Semi Final, the French dominated the Final as they did their opponents all weekend and deservedly take maximum points into the second round in Lyon next weekend.

In other matches, Spain edged out England to take 3rd place. Eslewhere, Georgia beat Belgium to win the Bowl and an impressive Portugal lifted the plate after a convincing victory over Germany.

Newly promoted Lithuania made a fantastic start to life in the Grand Prix Series, playing some great rugby and securing an 8th place

So, the show moves on to Lyon in France next weekend with great crowds expected at Matmut Stadium for what promises to be another great spectacle of European Sevens as the teams battle it out to be crowned European Champions and to book themselves a trip to Rio next year.

Ends

So the European series will double as the olympic qualifier?

If that's the case I think it's kind of unfair that England and Wales are involved. They can skew the results. Teams that get them in their pool are disadvantaged.

As far as I can work out - yes. Though I don't think England is playing their first choice team. While it may disadvantage the team in the pool, long term it shouldn't make much difference.

You would have to tip the US to claim both Olympics spots at home. Canada off to the last chance saloon in the men's along with who knows

US favourites for sure but wouldn't surprise me if they lost in a one off game. Canada have called in a handful of their European based pros for this event. All guys with plenty of 7's experience. Plus they have Captain John Moonlight. What a name.

Doubt anyone will get within 30 points of America in the women's event.

Braid's 50/50 Glasgow/London Scottish. Funny Trajectory. Signed till christmas with Glasgow back in September, Loaned out to the Scottish for Match Fitness, signed with them permanently with a proviso to be loaned back during the 6 Nations. Returned to Glasgow for the 6 Nations, went back to Scottish for 2 weeks, injury crisis hit and returned to Glasgow till the end of our season, before moving back to the Scottish after the RWC.

Sad to see DTH not play, but that's a good group of lads to bring in for the tournament, given he's essential for the RWC, they'd understandably get rid of any risk of him doing something to hurt himself after a bit of a stop and start season.
