Rugby League - Progressive thinking

Read that article earlier, my initial thought where does that leave the Tahs? (as their home ground would thus get booked so often by the mungos, making it a tight schedule!)

It won't happen!

I like the Wests/Tigers concept of using three venues, thus servicing their cross Sydney fan base. And by allotting appropriate games to these venues they maximise the chance of a capacity crowd.

These days a match at Leichhardt is such a terrific experience that you don't give a toss about the crap services and the parking nightmare. Someone should buy the Tah's board and marketing boys tickets to these games as they have probably forgotten about the concept of atmosphere. Atmoshere generates crowds, not results.

Maybe a Tahs afternoon home game at Concord? Concord would be easier to access than Leichhardt, but parking would still be a nightmare and the facilities are below par. However, with a capacity of 20,000, it would accommodate recent Tahs home crowds.

I'd prefer if they took it a bit further out and had a game a Parramatta stadium or Blue Tongue (Gosford) or Ausgrid (Newcastle) but we'll have to wait until a Billionaire, who doesn't care for stadium deals, buys the Tahs.

I'd put my hand up but I'm about a Billion short of being a Billionaire.

You forgot WIN in Wollongong. How revolutionary would that be, the NSW Waratahs actually taking the game to venues outside of Sydney. You in the rest of NSW.:)

Actually, this is issue somewhat highlights one of my bug bears with this new format. We have a 4 week test window where Super Rugby just stops. Why? Yes, the top tier of talent will be off with national duties but all that means is that creates more opportunities for up and comers. Take those games (as they'll likely draw smaller crowds with the bigger names) to the smaller country centres like they do in trials.

I'm sure I remember watching the Reds beat the Tahs in Lismore one night a couple of years ago.
It was a trial match. Just like they have done every other year recently too. Tamworth, Nowra, Orange and Gosford have all hosted games.

Trials are fine. However, adding at least 2-3 more destinations to that list with full competition games would prove far greater benefit I believe. People will care more if the games mean something other than a preseason tune up. None of the other codes are doing this, we should. It would prove that Rugby is interested in the country outside of preseason trials against the Fiji Warriors.

Don't know if you noticed but the NRL do take games to new venues. Being a Central Coast resident it is hard to escape the fact that there are a few games at Gosford a year (and they actually promote the games unlike the 'tahs or ARU) and I gthink I read that there was an NRL game in Perth not long ago. Ticket prices for 'tahs games are exorbitant to say the least and if they fixed that it may help fix the dwindling crowds.

Aussie D both perth and gosford have had teams in the league comp over the years, havent they?
In Gosford Norths/Manly couldn't make a go of it - dont know why some unkind people have said it was just a Manly manoeuvre to get the bears out of the way....

You are taking me out of context when I was replying to another poster who mentioned that league should take games to country areas and Perth.

I wasn't having a go at you.
These locations are marginal for league and union as history shows - unless you are of the view that manly speared the joint venture and it would otherwise have succeeded.

In my two posts on the subject, I never mentioned league. Not once. I'm talking about taking games even further afoot than just Gosford (which is just Sydney by extension). I'm talking about taking games to the Lismore's, Tamworth's and Wagga's of the greater NSW region. Couldn't care less where League take their games.

The reason they can't and won't do it is simple- cash.

The NSWRU is struggling with razor-thin margins every year. They desperately need big crowds at the SFS for every game. The survival of the Tahs depends on it.

Whilst it would be great for the game out there, taking a match to Lismore or Wagga is just not a viable option. Crowd would be around 10,000, the TV coverage would be of poorer standard and the advertisers would have less stadium space to use. Waratah members would lose a home game thus devaluing the product.

It's a sad reality of rugby nowadays, but a trial is the best rugby these areas will get for some time I reckon.

Baba - you're right and its hard to see when it will ever end: even if, despite my predictable predictions about the Tahs, the go OK this season they have not been will not be getting regular good crowds sufficient to inject some cash into the coffers. This season will be break even at best, I reckon. The ARU has no interest or capacity - this is where the third tier could have helped but that dream has sailed too.

Is there a more hilariously scandalous sport than League? Truly an incredible sport that can take hit after hit and still keep on rolling. Look at this list of cock-ups just in the most recent off-season (taken from NRL reddit), genuinely impressive and this was apparently a quiet off-season: https://www.reddit.com/r/nrl/comments/fh9jke/201920_offseason_drama_scandals_review/.

And the most recent scandal, a player sleeping with a 16 year old school girl he met on a school visit representing the club! Genuinely outstanding at how bad the optics are. Mentor relationship, representing his work, club lost a 2 million dollar sponsorship deal. Also he asked for nudes from her which would definitely be considered child pornography.
