i think the primary choices for rugby matches are rio tinto stadium (home of real salt lake) in salt lake where rugby is very popular (due to huge islander population - result of mormon church), los angeles at home depot centre (specific for la galaxy and about 30,000 people), and houston where rugby seems quite popular (i'm guessing due to international nature of houston resulting from oil and gas cos - lots of expats there).

yup Dick's Sporting Goods park in denver. has hosted churchill cup matches in the past when that was going. rugby usa is based out of denver, so yes its quite popular. however, they've had games there at the official 'rugby stadium' and they fill it - however i think its about 5,000 - so not sure what the deal is with the fans there!

more corporate money in the U.S to sponsor things like that. it's a huge market and it costs a fair penny to sponsor a stadium, and more corporates over there have that kind of money.

As commercialised as the US is, they have surprisingly maintained the sanctity of the match day jersey.. NFL, NBA etc have refused to allow sponsorships to appear on the jerseys, it's not a legislative restriction it's a decision set by the governing body..
So sponsors have found other ways to spread their brand name and spend their advertising budget..

i think as you say it is an NHL or NFL decision as i believe the governing bodies own the images/brands for the sports teams. the clubs can sell advertising at the stadium etc, but the actual brand 'Montreal CAnadians' is a registered trademark of the NHL.

great news for canadian rugby. i don't know the deal size in dollar terms, but at the very least it is consistent multi-year cashflow and a live exposure. RWC 7's, the USA games, the ireland game and the NZ maori games in November will all be televised live across the country.

Story from the Washington Post about a rugby team out of a all African-American school and their struggles while they play coming from low socio-economic backgrounds. Their coach started their rugby program from scratch 14 years ago I think and left this year.

Pryde Rugby and Tal Bayer are that particular program. They were probably the 3rd ranked school in the country last season only losing to Xavier of New York (2nd in the nation) by a single point (if they had a better goal kicker they would have won by 8).
Some good players among them especially in the form of their 12. He recently toured Argentina with the HSAA's and performed well against the best U18s Argentina had to offer.
