Well they're advertising revenues aren't going up yet they're paying (a lot) more for sport. Seems like declining benefit to me. It's also fact that younger people are switching off FTA at a much higher rate than older people. Having people watch sport is all well and good but they need people to watch their other shows to make money - and the most sought after demographics are switching off.

Foxtel is screwed in the long term too. There's no way a business model that makes you buy a whole heap of stuff you don't want, just to get the stuff you do want, is going to survive.

Advertising revenues aren't growing at the same rate as costs but I'm not sure that is reflected across all genres/timeslots. I think the reason that broadcast deals for sport are still growing is because it's the one area where people watch live (and can't skip the ads or get the product elsewhere) and ads are still valuable.

Clearly they need to adapt their business models but at this point it would seem that a lot of their value lies in broadcasting sport.

Are you sure that advertising revenues aren't growing when it comes to sport?

Who knows what'll happen.

Currently for US Sports comprehensive subscriptions plans seem to be the following. NFL Gamepass is $260 US. NBA League Pass is $200 US. MLB is $130 US, not including pre or post season. NHL will be $115 starting from this year. Most of these are subject to blackouts as well.

Could be an expensive path.

No, I just know that total advertising in FTA networks is basically flat (and that it's falling as a % of media spend). And I've also heard David Gyngell say that they don't make money from having NRL rights, but that they need them to attract viewers. So if those viewers sticking around for other stuff is declining, they're just going to keep bleeding. They're buying sports rights to keep their failing business model alive! They're so vulnerable to disrupters it's ridiculous.

Are TV audiences for live sport any higher than they were 10 years ago? Not for the very biggest events, but for say Friday Night Football?

I have no idea how the audiences compare to over the last decade.

Who is the major competition for the sports rights though? One advantage the FTA broadcasters have in Australia is that their is never going to be any serious global competition to buy the rights to the broadcasts of AFL and NRL because the audience outside Australia is very small relatively.

Australia is a huge way off a sporting code being able to sell the principal rights to an online broadcaster. TV is still the overwhelming leader as far as where people watch content.

Surely as the TV model continues to take a hit it will be the weaker broadcast areas that will be cut back. If no one is watching the other content that people can either access elsewhere or aren't interested in because it's crap, surely those are the areas that wither.

Surely vulnerability to digital disruption comes from someone offering an alternative product at a cheaper price or for a much better service. It's going to cost a huge amount of money for another player to buy the rights for AFL/NRL an enter that market. The NRL and AFL would also need an unbelievable sign up rate to make it worthwhile going it alone and doing all their own broadcasting themselves.

Sport is by far the hardest area for digital disruption.

I think what will happen is that the FTA networks won't be able to keep paying so much more money for rights. And I doubt the NRL and AFL will be willing to accept a pay cut or inflationary increases. So they'll look for alternatives. And the money will be elsewhere.

And all these online 'channels' or services still deliver content through TV's (as well as any other internet connected device)! It's no more difficult than watching broadcast TV now, you just have greater control. Watch what you want to watch when you want to watch it, and only pay for what you want to pay for.

And from an advertising perspective, digital gives you much greater ability to target specific people. Advertisers pay for that!!

Gem's loss is Foxtels gain
And there was no sign of viewing fatigue during the early hours of Sunday morning when Fox Sports attracted its highest-ever ratings for a pool match at any Rugby World Cup as the Wallabies knocked England out of their own tournament with a 33-13 victory.
In a match that kicked off at 6am AEDT, Fox Sports drew 225,000 viewers, with thousands more watching in 4000 clubs and pubs around the nation.

True - but it may give an indication into their love of jumping on a band wagon, but given the game was a dead rubber... my hopes aren't high

France v Ireland had a 72% share of the available audience. It should be noted too that the Ireland soccer team played 2 crucial European championship qualifiers, both outrated by the rugby as above. Even Australia v England outrated Ireland v Germany which was Ireland beating the world champions....

Add in the ratings from Northern Ireland and it's going very well on the island of Ireland-to add to France, the UK and Japan. Speaking of France, they recorded their highest audience of the year with France v Ireland;

France is in the quarterfinals of the World Cup rugby but it will face the All Blacks. This is the price to pay after its defeat on Sunday afternoon against Ireland 24 to 9. A meeting broadcast on TF1 and well attended, with 10.94 million viewers from 5:35 p.m. to 7:50 p.m. 53.1% the public at this time! This is the record audience of the competition and of the year for TF1. The previous bonus was being held by "Les Enfoirés".

Target on market shares are impressive: 79% of men aged 15-24 and 71% of men under 50 years. The score on the famous household meanwhile reached 47%! 20 hours TF1 was worn by this success, with 7.8 million viewers or 30.8% of the public. France 2 resistant in front with 6.2 million (24.5%). The last match of the Blues against Canada aired Thursday, October 1 bonus was attended by more than 9 million fans of the oval ball until 10:50 p.m. on average, 37.9% of the public.

Bloody brilliant for our sport

Another one from Foxtel
Australia v Scotland - 82k.

It's been said plenty of times already, but these timezones are brutal for ratings here in Australia
