U18 Academy Games and Australia U18s

I’d change our 7, 12, 15 and bring in Durbridge, Fakafunua & Jacques to start as a must.

I like our starting tight 5.

Sounds silly with the score what is now but they can win the second game if they can control some possession inside the NZ half. We kicked it dead twice and looked clueless when it got past 10.

Yeah, we needed more minutes out of our starting 5. Even though we had ascendency at scrumtime we didn’t get enough pay or create enough pressure.

NZ running away with it a little. Scored another try and then an absolutely IMMENSE effort to stop Aus from scoring a try just a metre out.

NZ too good in winning the collisions and then the offloads were too much for Aus to contain.

No James Warner, Marshall Le maitre, Charlie Poynton etc.

We need to start picking the right players if we want to win.

The limited time together definitely showed. Not sure we saw any cohesion in the backline. Scrum was excellent. Lineout needs some improvement.

Both No.7s did well (the starting 7 is built like Pocock) and Poynton off form at the end of the season so didnt warrant selection.

That was embarrassing from Australia and NZ. So many basic errors. I'm pretty sure there was a knock-on every 3 minutes of that game.

Makes no sense. Didn’t know he was a 10.

Certainly didn’t look like a 15 at that level yet.

Bit like the 20s trying to squeeze people in which is keeping specialist out of spots. Rarely works out.

I had no problem with the starting 9. He offered as much as Sharples who is more of a kicking threat.

Positives though were

1 is great around the park and held it at set piece.
3 was a beast at scrum time.
4,5 both have height and big motors.
14 beats the first defender almost every time. Needs support runners.

As they tired/replaced it started to slip.

no.5 Fergus Gillian was a beast, could tell the line out quality significantly dropped when he went off as he seemed to be the caller. Tight 5 kept Aus in the game. Need to get the real backs on next game

Earlier in the day Australian Schoolboys beat the Tongan Schoolboys 50-26 at Knox.

Correct, todays 15 (Finn) normally plays 10. However, played a handful of Colts 1 games at 15 this season. He also went to school with the 9 (Luke) so surprised they didn’t pair them today.

Good start by the Aust boys holding on with 14, but fell a part when the finishes came on. Sadly the NSW 10’s and NSW 9 didn’t show up & made no impact when they had game time & they had the 15 who is a game managing 10, playing in a position where he has never played before…?
What do you want them to do? Come on with 25 to go on the back foot into the wind? Australia didn’t convert any points in the first half with the wind.
