His TAS lads should feel pretty comfy in this Northern Tablelands (Arctic!) weather.
Wouldn’t surprise to see a fur seal blown in over the southern boundary fence!
Scots 3’s doing the job though. At oranges, Scots lead 15-0.

Yeah wow. There are at least 5 guys in Scots 3s who would make a decent account of themselves if thrown a 1sts jumper. Great depth.

But what were the Green & white doing?? Playing Newington into form like that ahead of GPS Round 1 against the Scots lads in just a few weeks’ time!? What were you thinking, fellas?? Sheesh!

I certainly expected a Trinity win, perhaps a close game, but a win to Trinity nevertheless. From the New perspective after a few losses, a win like that can turn the season around. Particularly when the team that you have beaten, beat Joeys two weeks before.

I'm by no means tipping a Newington GPS premiership, but things are looking far brighter than they were a week ago.

What's clear is that Scots are putting some effort into upskilling their lower teams in the age groups.

So with still one more round of trials to go for GPS (ex 3s) today's results have really 'upset the bookies'.

Seems now like 4 teams are a decent chance of claiming the title. One more solid win from New and that would incease to 5.

Last round of trials on 16/6 will be huge.

J v S will probably tell us a lot about who might be looking at a top two spot.

And V v N should reveal just how real is the potential resurgence of New, off the back of the return from injury of key players and promotion from 16As of players destined to be superstars in 2019 and 2020.

The other burning issue is who is going to make GPS 1s this year. From what I have seen, there is serious competition for just about every spot and some serious talent in the mix.

Yeah, I agree with much of that assessment, Jim.
The forward clashes pretty much cancelled each other out.
The respective D’s, despite the lopsided scoreline, was quite solid on both sides of the field.
The conditions certainly affected all that were out there - frigid-as (espesh on delicate receiving fingers late in a half!), the wind turning the ball into a floating balloon on occasion, from throwing in hookers to both sets of halves!
But maybe because of that, the Scots lads trended to keep the Gilbert a little bit tighter as the match progressed.
I thought the real difference today was the directness of the Scots’ runners. They really pointed up way better than the lads from the Tablelands, forcing the TAS lads into having to work in overdrive in defense.

Can only think that the Scots’ 3’s will be chuffed-as to have chalked up that one straight away in the 3’s Comp proper.

As no doubt will those Grammarians, both current and old!, getting one over the Cerise and Blue. As someone else said, maybe it was QH?, ALL wins over the JoeBoys, are pretty special! Well done the Black & Yellow!

They will be chuffed and especially because Joey's lost! That 2 point buffer over Joey's is pretty important.

Clearly, Newington provided a Massive Upset and Trinity may not be the first team to experience this change in form from New.

I was really (pleasantly) surprised by the score Scots put on New in the trial a few weeks ago. Yeah, Scots played well. But it seemed like New were a little short on their preparation.

The talent is there. Just needed two essential ingredients - confidence and combinations.

I really do hope today's performance is the start of a revival that puts them in the mix from here.

This post is totally off topic. This is from Armidale Friday night, part of the New England/Central North Secondary Comp! It's brought the other Armidale schools back into rugby or into rugby for the first time. TAS boys are not participating although the girls are. It is apparently secondary, although some of the kids are clearly not! I especially liked the use of soccer fields to play rugby!

Riverview for one have certainly flown below the radar. They've barely been mentioned as far as I can see.

It's just been pointed out to me that this clip shows the first time NEGS has defeated TAS in rugby!

My "source", when I can distract him from the ipad long enough, suggests the 13As won 50-16 and the 13Bs put 60 points on. Good day for them (13s played on the main field at Stanmore).

Waverly 42-10 over Shore (although Waverly scored a try right on the bell) out at Death Valley. Improved performance from Shore and refereeing was also a bit suspect.

41-10. Waverley did indeed score on the bell (from a tap inside their 22 and probably try of the day). Shore also scooped up a loose pass inside their 22 & a winger ran length of the field against the run of play so probably even (although not in terms of crowd fulfilment). Waverley were caned in the penalties and had two yellow cards so ref did the home team no favours. Agree that Shore had improved and they certainly had a lot of heart, but the lack of size and lack of attacking creativity will hurt them in the GPS season.

I haven’t seen the other teams play yet but having watched kings and Scots play today I thought both teams look beatable. Scots forwards are strong at recycling and when they get a roll on are dangerous. I thought both teams were below last year’s teams. What does everybody think about these 1st’s teams vs last year’s teams?

Great to see that Newington A teams are travelling well to date. Yes, they are yet to met their fellow GPS counter-parts who will raise the standard of play for these teams.

QH and SM correct if I am wrong, but by memory the 13As and 14As are undefeated and both have amassed some big scores against quality opponents Scots, Waverley, St.Augustines.
Equally, the 15As with exception of a lost to Oakhill continue to improve with four wins in a row.
Our 16As lost to Scots, but as the 15As and 15Bs from from 2017. Since then the combinations have come together and its great to see the 15B players stepping up to the A team level. Particularly as their only 3 teams to recruit from concerning depth.

The 1st XV win for me today was not so much a surprise, but rather the realisation that the team is coming together.

Clearly, the Rugby management and coaching of Newington teams is proving to be very effective and something we supporters should be proud of as a community.
