Do you know how your Shore 15as went v Riverview last week, should have been a good game?

Shore lost but I'm unsure by how many. How did Waverly 15as go when they played Riverview?

Up the guts , I retract the word flog... and my intent was not to belittle

I just think it critical for gps comp that Shore rugby remain strong , in same way that cas comp has vested interest in keeping the likes of Cranbrook and aloys strong

Shore continues to have good strength in lower grades, and fears of shores relegation, are exactly that ... fears

I remember that great shore upset at hunters hill... I was there as I knew that shore team had some good eggs

And I bet that is one picture joker would find hard to find...a jubilant Phil Waugh at h/hill

Certainly one the joe boys would like to forget

Go view ... always love an underdog... even if joeys will argue they are it in the 3rds

Hunters Hill, 10 August 1996

Shore fielded an unchanged ream for the fourth competition match and felt that St Josephs were vulnerable. However, in fine conditions at Hunters Hill, Joeys started at great speed and accumulated15 points within 20 minutes through two tries, a conversion and a penalty goal. All observers were at this point expecting the score to roll on in the same vein, the only unbelievers being the Shore players. A Hugh Klen run, breaking several tackles rook play into the St Josephs quarter. A serum win and rolling maul set up perfect ball for the backs and a long pass from Klem followed by a perfectly timed short ball from Hercus put Brakell in for a try under the St Josephs posts. Pressure by Phil Waugh on the St Josephs five-eighth enabled him to charge down a clearance kick, coolly gather in the rebound and scamper across the line to score our wide. With Shore just 12-15 down, both teams felt that they had the potential to win the second half and the match. When St Josephs kicked a penalty goal early in the second half, the task became that much harder for Shore. Possession and territory were shared for most of the half with Super Rugby Josephs kicking a penalty goal to extend their lead to 18-12. A crucial contribution came from hooker St Clair, who took several strikes against the head. Klem kept Shore in touch with some strong runs and well placed touch finders before we took the lead for the first time with just 16. minutes remaining. Hercus swooped on a wide St Josephs pass to grab an intercept and nervously ran 70 metres to score between the posts. Shore then clung to a one point lead despite several threatening attacking raids and attempts at goal from St Josephs. It was a well deserved and rare victory for any team over the St Josephs First XV at Hunters Hill and one of which the Shore players can forever be proud. St Josephs were as gracious in defeat as the Shore boys were humble in victory, all of which served to make 10 August 1996 one of the more memorable days in Shore Rugby history.

At the end of the game the Joeys boys stood in the grandstand and gave three cheers and applause to Shore as they left the field. Then started to sing for their own players. A Shore supporter standing next to me behind the northern goal line said he was floored by the sportsmanship of the Joeys boys and their reaction to a loss. Brother Anthony said Phil Waugh was the finest loose forward he ever saw in the GPS and was the difference that day.

All good, I can see how easy it is to come to assumption Joeys 2s would push Shore given some of Shore's recent results and the strength of Joeys 2s. Just thought I'd point out Shore 2nds played very well both times they met Joeys so as not to deny the Shore boys any credit.

Yes, they've had a funny old season playing very well against Scots and Joeys for the most part but struggling against Kings and Riverview.

Tom Bowman? He was in Centenary winning 1993 Scots side.

Rich.e I am getting my wires crossed ... I was trying to remember who the other big forward was ... that Joeys struggled to contain ... and for some reason I had the name Jonno Bowman in my head ... I think he was related to Tom Bowman ... but he wasn't 1996

Riverview flogged us by 50.

However, we did have 6 out, 5 were our big/mobile forwards, so they had all the ball, and they are a very good side.
Last year they beat us by a last min try.

The Shore 15a side is pretty strong.

There is some chatter that some 15s this year will move up to Opens next year. It’s one of the rare Shore A sides that are not completely dwarfed by their opposition.

If View win (or it’s draw), an undefeated P’ship and a non-existent Trophy are theirs. (Am still waiting for Father Jim Belshaw to have the silversmiths of Armidale strike something appropriate.)

Jono Bowman left in 1998, played a bit in the 1st in 1997 and full time in 1998. He was Tom's cousin and his brother left Scots in 1992. Jono went to Shore as his Dad was upset with the 1993 imports.

There is some chatter that some 15s this year will move up to Opens next year. It’s one of the rare Shore A sides that are not completely dwarfed by their opposition.

I wouldn't be surprised and I think you will find a number of this years 15as from a number of schools may be elevated into the opens. The 15s age group this year had about 6-7 extremely strong teams, a tough year to win.

Off topic, but this was shared with local schools in my area to answer the question, "why play rugby?"
