All Blacks vs Kangaroos?

I really wouldn't stress about it RN, it won't happen. As many have pointed out it's been proposed many times before and never got off the ground. This time it appears to be driven out of the desperation for cash by the ARL. With regards to RA being left out of the loop, there are 2 reasons for that - 1) it's been proposed and rejected several times before, and 2) they will be billing it as the worlds best League team taking on the world's best union team.

IF it were to happen it certainly won't be the first choice AB's players taking part.

Hmmm.

Former All Blacks coach Steve Hansen said it would be "quite exciting" to see New Zealand rugby's finest doing battle with the Australian Kangaroos - but the hybrid concept would only succeed if proper rules were thrashed out.
Hansen offered his view about the proposed cross code clash after his successor as All Blacks coach, Ian Foster, admitted he'd spoken several times with Kangaroos coach Mal Meninga about the prospect of meeting in an historic game.
"I'm not the All Blacks coach anymore so I don't have any say if it will happen,'' Hansen said on Friday.
"But if it's a one-off, even if it's every now and then, it could be quite exciting if they got the rules right. There are quality athletes in both camps.

"The big thing is where you fit it into a normal calendar. I guess this year there would be a possibility to do it. We've starved of live sport so anything would be good.''
Foster said it was an enticing to "see who is the greatest" but conceded coming up with the right rules would be key.
"It is one of those debates that will go on in New Zealand and Aussie pubs for a long time. The reality is even if we played each other we will never know because there will be a debate about the rules and who it favoured," Foster said.
"So it’s an idea, it’s a tough year and we are trying to generate as much money as we can to save the game in this country and if we can’t get the number of Test matches we want then maybe it is an option."

That's right, everybody wins. Everybody walks away with their previous preferences confirmed. Nobody watches it and suddenly transforms from a league to a union fanatic or vice versa. It's purely an income generating novelty event.

The league players wouldn’t buy it. It worked ok for the schoolboy game as a lot of them played both codes. But no way are you going to teach a league player to ruck and maul properly in the space of a month, barring the odd ex union player like Crichton.

With the amount of players signed from traditionally rugby schools they could field a team of near Kangaroos strength with rugby backgrounds, just off the top of my head there is Cam Murray (13), Crichton (12), Frizell (11), Croft (7), Keary (6), Ponga (1), Gagai (5). With de-powered scrums and no lineouts I think the advantage would be to the kangaoos in that it would just be open to the same shaped stereo-typical athletes and eliminate the advantage of the rugby front row and second row.

^ if the scrums are uncontested & there's no lineouts that's not a hybrid game it's unlimited tackle League.

Hansen, the ex-All Blacks coach, has recommended a 14-a-side game - the perfect compromise between rugby league’s 13 players and the 15 which take part in rugby union.
Lineouts would be scrapped, while scrums would be non-contestable, league-style pack-downs to avoid the risk of injury for Kangaroos forward who do not practise scrummaging like their rugby counterparts.

Nope. Nope. Nope. Why is it that Rugby has to compromise is laws and game structures and League pretty much only has to show up? Next it will be no Rugby styled rucks. Might as well just play a game of League and be done with it.

As I said it will suit league and its non-positional athletes.

The full article is:

Former New Zealand rugby coach Steve Hansen has been consulted on constructing a set of rules to ensure a Kangaroos-All Blacks hybrid game would be a trans-Tasman sporting success.
The Courier-Mail has exclusively obtained the rules for the proposed Kangaroos-All Blacks showdown - dubbed ‘HISTORY’ - which would be played on Saturday, December 5 this year.

A kick out on the full or a kick which finds touch would result in a scrum.
Once a player is tackled, there will be no play-the-ball as witnessed in rugby league. Instead, the hybrid fixture would see a ruck-and-maul style breakdown, where the ball carrier immediately plants the ball on the ground for play to continue.
The All Blacks and Kangaroos would have a maximum of eight tackles or ‘drives’ to hold possession. Once the last tackle is reached, the team in possession must kick or face an immediate turnover to the other side.
A try will be worth four points, with a possible bonus for a five-point try if the tryscorer touches down directly under the goalposts.
Penalty goals and field goals in rugby union are worth three points, but under the hybrid format, all goals, including conversions, would be worth two points.
Other key rules will be on the table for discussion if the NZR and NRL agree to the contest.

Argh. What a mess of a game. What elements of Union are actually being retained? and how can you even say it's the All Blacks as you wouldn't field 1/2 your usual players under this rule/law set. I can see a lot of non-regular AB NZ players getting a cheap cap.

Does anyone know or care what the forward/ back split is? 7/7? 8/6? 6/8? Anyways, ABH (for All Black Hybrid) props are probably Papali'i, Savea, Sotutu & Frizell.

Given it is non-contested scrums i'm guessing you drop a forward, also both games run with 7 backs you probably retain that. Just a guess though

If it goes ahead (which I strongly doubt), the game will essentially revolve around how the rucks and mauls are refereed. With no lineouts and uncontested scrums the only contests are the tackle and the ensuing ruck or maul. If a Union referee refereeing to Union standards, then the Leaguies will be in for a long hard day. If a League referee then it will be a mess. The speed and accuracy that Kiwi sides recycle the ball will be difficult for Leaguies to counter and the speed, accuracy and width of Union backline ball movement is a level above League players (just watch the difference on a split screen showing a Union game and a League game). On defence, Union players contesting the breakdown will have a significant advantage over League players with out any skills training in that area.

So how does a seven man scrum form up? We going back to 2-3-2? Even a league scrum has to have an agreed form.

Given scrums are uncontested simply play seven loose forwards in a three four formation (ie drop the No 8 as happens mostly now with yellow cards)

What does it matter? League puts backs in the scrum and forwards in the backline. Ridiculous notion if they even go uncontested scrums.
