Broadcast options for Australian Rugby

So state of union and national club championship were part of package but not offered this season by Stan - can people remind me that a) Stan plan to offer these in future (seasons) or b) never took up the option or c) hedged their bets and said may take these up.

Personally feel we need a rebranded nrc mark 2 as well but baby steps I guess before Stan/ nine would consider expanding their rugby product investments

When the 9/STAN deal was announced they noted something along the lines of new assets like SOU and Mens & Womens 7s circuit would be developed for 2022.

Sydney and Brisbane clubs have been encouraged to consider scheduling more first grade matches on Friday nights and Sunday afternoons to accommodate the plans of Stan Sport to broadcast every club rugby game.

Four regular season matches in both competitions throughout the year will be shown on free-to-air channel 9Gem, plus all finals matches. All other fixtures will be shown on Stan, with all matches each weekend – six in Sydney and four in Brisbane – live and on-demand.

Meanwhile, a nationwide club championship could still happen later in the year but discussions are still in their infancy given RA’s priority to ensure Super Rugby AU is completed. RA, Stan and clubs from Sydney and Brisbane have been discussing how the partnership will work in coming months.

As long as they get adequate support from the state unions (cough nsw cough cough). Reds took the right approach but would prefer to see clubs more strongly aligned to a NRC team (in QLD I’d like to see North clubs v South of the river clubs)

I wonder whether a similar concept to the Own the Force initiative could ever work with something similar to the NRC.

The simplest way forward would be to use the extended squads from the franchises in the form while giving both the Sydney and Brisbane clubs the right to select and operate their own representative squad using players not contracted to a professional franchise.

What a difference a broadcaster partner who is just as interested as you are in growing the game, as opposed to a broadcaster partner who has invested so heavily is other codes you are almost kept in your place for the benefit of others.

First time since the late 90's I believe we have a combination of decent management who signed with a broadcaster wanting rugby to be successful.

Just move to a domestic competition with private investment [OK I will shut up] and the circle will be complete.

I have to just say, Ive watched way more rugby games not involved with the Brumbies this year on Stan then I ever did with Kayo.. I even watched probably my two least favorite teams Tahs vs Rebels last night. Im liking the domestic first, and we have such a small amount of games and teams every time out counts..

Plus my fetch top box has stan app, so easy to just get rugby.

No one is going to take you to task around the broadcast question. Most of the issue has been the idea that we needed to emulate the A-League in structure. We don't. The A-League is still struggling this season much as they did last season. Super Rugby Au is comfortably out rating it on FTA and more than likely would continue that trend if you were to compare Stan vs Fox/Kayo.

I think the confusion was that Fox Sports (or whatever) in the USA has it. Nothing to do with back here.

The McReight no try decision demonstrated why a referee needs to be involved in the broadcast, even if they are waiting by a phone to phone in their opinion.

Being a former Test player does not mean you are an exert on the laws of the game and this was a prime example of how Rugby could really add expertise to the broadcast.

One of the 6 nations telecasts this weekend had the ref's words drown out the commentary.
Fantastic stuff.
