What I've noticed from a neutral point of view that a lot of St Laurence's ball movement specifically their blocks involve some sort of a shepherd with their tail runner catching the ball on the inside or behind the lead runners back.
What are you thoughts?

I'm neutral with a lad in Padua 4ths This wasn't apparent during the Firsts game. What was apparent during that game was Padua getting it wrong tactically and didn't adapt - the downtown kick and chase was not working with 4 Laurie's players dropping back to cover - even then the ball was not run out wide to exploit the space. The #10 in Padua Seconds was excellent- better served with him at 10 and the other guy who is not a natural 10 at 15 - surprised the coaches didn't read this and abandon the kick at all costs approach which flopped.

Pundit, I think you are somewhat right for this year reviewing the standard I have seen but 16A not 15.

However, every AIC premiership winner for the last 5 years would beat what the bottom 4 sides in GPS roll out and some years would have competed with some of the top schools. And we all know why the top GPS rugby schools flourish. For example, Southport has won half of its 8 outright premierships and all of their 3 shared premierships since 2000. Kudos to their meritorious first XVs of 1922, 1926, 1933 and 1938.

BBC won 100% of its outright premierships in 2020. But the 1954 monkey was a big one for the last 10 years, and expectations have been up there for a few years with the money spent.

Take away their recruitment "tools" and see what sort of First XVs you name. As painful as it might be for GPS supporters to read, TSS and BBC wouldn't make the top 3 in AIC because they are so top heavy with recruits but Nudgee would still be relatively strong because of its long heritage as a successful rugby school and a lot of next generation talent but certainly, wouldn't be as dominant without their usual intakes. Not so sure on Churchie (golden era in 50s and 60s) and State High (whose catchment is BIG) but I suspect Churchie's success of 2 outright and 2 shared premierships since 2000 only had them competing because of one thing.

The coaching has not always better either. Otherwise, QLD would have had more Super Rugby success in the last 20 years given the majority of players had GPS schooling backgrounds. But the GPS funnel into a Reds pathway development was broken and we have only seen an appropriate skills focused program in the last 5-6 years, now paying dividends with lots to come. There were also 5/6 GPS old boys in the Brumbies starting XV most weeks. Some of them are the best young talent in the country.

I am not against what the GPS schools do and know there is another thread for this discussion. They are definitely next level and good luck to them.

Round 3 this week looks like an absolute cracker of a round. This round is when we start to see teams find that early momentum and results defining how the rest of the season pans out.

A couple of local derbies with the battle of the West in Eddies vs Peters and the battle of the North in St Patrick's vs Padua. A must win for Padua to keep their premiership hopes alive. Always a good intense battle between these two schools and big crowd as expected at Curlew Park.

Iona vs Lauries and Villa vs Marist are the other two games which will also be interesting. For me I'm tipping Peters, Padua, Lauries and Marist.

PETERS by 20
PADUA by 30
SLC by 20
VILL by 10

haha, you're looking for bait MA. This comp is way too tight for those predictions.

SEC at home to win their first in a few years by 5, so long as they can contain the sherman tank on the left wing. Easier said than done though.
Padua by 30? you jest. SPC at home and coming off a good win, I see them up by 7.
Iona first game at home in a close one by 3. SLC have a clear game plan which can be countered, expecting Kefu has done his homework. Iona seem to have a few more attacking options than what SLC have faced so far. Will win if they don't give away kickable penalties.
MCA v Villa. Depends if Marist can minimise errors and hold their nerve in attack, Villa will be fired up at home. MCA by 2.

Very very close comp this year. I could go 0/4, but no blowouts.

How exciting is footy been so far this year! some quality games with many more to come. I am especially looking forward to the Pats vs Padua game, the battle of the northside. some quality players in the pats team include the likes of tim ryan the outside centre, he has exceptional footwork and blistering speed. Jackson Dows is a quality 9 that has been pushed to play inside centre due to lack of depth. However, most importantly the st pats big man Eddie Jilani is a handful with his big frame. Can't wait till saturday comes around, ive got pats winning by 10 over padua. Tim Ryan to be the difference maker! NG

Predictions for the weekend:

SEC vs SPLC - SPLC by 5+
Eddies expected to put up a tough fight at home but don't see Peters losing with their size and strength of backline.

SPC vs PAD - SPC by 5+
Should be a close game in the battle of the northside, but playing at Curlew and being 2-0 I don't see the Pats losing this one. Bear in mind, Padua need to win this game to keep their premiership hopes alive. Pats expected to bring a large crowd.

IONA vs SLC - SLC by 3+
Iona on Old Boys Day could cause an upset if they play smart rugby and Kefu has done his usual work. However, don't see Lauries going down already being 2-0 and beating two likely premiership contenders Padua and Ashgrove in close they games. Lauries should be fueled with confidence. Large crowds expected from both schools.

VNC vs MCA - MCA by 3+
Villa boys will be fired up at home coming off a strong win against Peters showing they can stay in the fight for the whole 70 minutes and could cause an upset. However, Ashgrove boast experience and know how to win games which is where I see them getting over the line. Should be a great atmosphere at Tingalpa.

Good to see the Year 12 Cohort participating in the forum - but seriously what are they teaching kids in English these days??

Good Day everyone I'm back for the weekly reffing update for AIC,
Been very good competition this year and referees are going to be critical to the game coming into the closing rounds.

For Round 3:

St Patricks vs Padua College: Steve Leszczynski
Iona College vs St Laurences: Greg Milne
St Peters vs St Edmunds: Nicholas Leseberg
Villanova College vs Marist College: Rodd Brockett

Good Luck with the fixtures this week everyone and I'm sure to be excited to here the updates after Saturday!

Kindest Regards,
Nig

It is a concern that they are going uncontested in scrums Reg. Can't see them getting invited in to any comp soon unless they sort that out.

The coaches might might want to get into contact with this bloke

A more passionate advocate of the set piece you will not find, he'll have them ready to go in a few sessions, at least against AIC 2nd teams. Pretty sure he'd be happy if rugby games were 70/80 minutes of scrummaging with the backs watching on holding hands and talking about their feelings.

Good news. They've started a weekly scrum school. Should assist with getting back to normal (actual scrums) down the track.

Good to hear Reg, great initiative. Some schools could learn from this and follow suit. Uncontested scrums are a blight on the game and coaches should be doing all they can to put scrum ready props on the field.

Assuming Ashgrove win, I'm hoping both Iona and Padua also get up which will give us 4 teams with one loss after 3 rounds. Will make the back end of the season even more interesting.

Out at Tingalpa watching Villa v Marist. A relation is refereeing and doing a good job.

The gold pack dominated first half and Villa only try from a charge down.

Marist has lost 2 player to injury - one was a blue card - but lead comfortably. They might press the accelerator in half two.
