SLAR will have six full time franchises next season with the Colombian based Los Cafeteros Pro joining as full members. They were to feature for two games against the bottom ranked SLAR this year before Covid.

a couple of years ago I was fortunately able to visit the world's most southern rugby ground(adjacent to the world's most southern golf course),in Ushuaia,Argentina.It was in January,the height of summer-with the howling wind blowing down the Beagle channel and a temp of about 5 degrees;they must breed them tough down there!

Round 2 of the Sth American 4 Nations has kicked off with Chile backing up their strong performance in a very narrow loss against Arg XV (who much as Selkham pushed Los Ceibos to the line in SLAR) by beating Uruguay 21-22 today. Brazil will face off against Arg XV having fallen to Uruguay in the first round 27-18.

It's been a pretty significant turnaround for Chile who have always had the numbers but lacked any real ambition or structure until quite recently. Opting to focus more on 7s than the 15 man game in terms of professionalism and programs. However, since their new coach and board entered the frame they've established two HP centres with a couple more in the works, are significantly developing their depth and look to expand their playing base. Which has had a fairly quick impact.

What has helped this along has been the jump to professionalism across the continent with with each of the 4 participating Unions featuring professional squads helping to raise the competitiveness and standards. And if all goes well and to plan this trend should continue with Paraguay via Olimipia looking to strengthen its scene, Colombia's Cafeteros Pro planning on joining SLAR full time from 2021 and even Mexico working towards joining in the near future.

There's even talk of a second Chilean squad joining a likely 2nd Uruguayan squad in the next couple of seasons.

Been a while since this thread has seen an update. So here goes. According to the Polish RU they will be transitioning their 10 team national league to professionalism starting from next season. Will be interesting to see how it develops and if it can match the likes of Spain where teams operate on $300-500,000(Euro) player budgets.

First game of the 2021 SLAR season has been run and won. With Penarol (Uruguay) 40 - Olimipia (Paraguay) 11. Unfortunately you cannot view it at present outside of Sth America. Pity.

There's been a European professional league in the works for a while now. Not a lot of info out there. But we've got something in the form of the identity of the potential Spanish bids. A JV between the Castilla y Leon clubs (three pretty strong clubs at that) and a Basque based club. Apparently RE are long for one from each of the 6 REC nations plus the Netherlands (RET winners) plus a 'wildcard'. Personally I hope they are a little more flexible on the numbers and go to 10 from their initial goal of 8 of the Spanish and likely Russian bids are good enough.

This would a fantastic competition if it could get off the ground! This is exactly what rugby needs in Europe - the winners of this competition should be given a place in the European Challenge Cup.

There's a planned launch of a professional 7s circuit in the US in their autumn. Premier Rugby 7s. Will feature 6 men's and 4 women's teams. They are stating that they will have equal pay for both men and women and have already signed a number of the US men's and women's 7s squads.
