NSW CAS Rugby 2021

Overtime

Lord, people here find strange things to argue over. Next thing there'll be a fight over which school's supporters are the best hung.

I am sure everyone is aware that the underlying issue, 'argument as you call it' is 'not what the young boy said about cheering at the game'. There has been sufficient discussion this year about what the underlying issue is which I'm sure you have read. I will leave it at that.

WTF?

Seriously? You make a claim of only one side cheering in the spirit of the game then come up with this shite above? You have already had one account refuting your "year 6 kid" from someone who was actually at the game (unlike you). It seems you are quite happy to spread rumours, untruths and innuendo. Unfortunately, by not being at the game and spreading rumours, your level of credibility is pretty low.

So boys, thoughts on CAS 1's v GPS 1's this Thursday.................I reckon the CAS team have a huge chance of winning, and winning well. Big powerful forwards, very slick backline, no Jack Bowen & Henry O'Donnell to contend with. CAS by 20!!

Some interesting selections in both teams, not bad, just interesting. I think the CAS forwards will prove too strong for their GPS counterparts meaning the scrums at least will favour the team in red. The GPS forwards have plenty of mongrel, so the breakdown will be interesting - I am going to say it will be pretty even there although I know Charlie Herdman is great over the ball. Lineouts to CAS too, the Waverley row too tall. Whilst Sam Alsop is a great player, I think Ned SS will be too powerful for him to contain all day.

In the backs, GPS certainly have some talent there and will be a great matchup. I am looking forward to seeing the centre pairings compete. Luke Tucker a great open play ball runner, and Isaiah should be able to get him into space with his long cut out passes.

Once the reserves come on, it will heat up again. Bowen is Isaiah's equivalent I think, and Riley Hemsworth's speed may open up the game at the end. Mind you some of the CAS 2nds are also game changers, Jack Black is an extremely powerful runner and Theo Kidd has a great turn of speed.

It will be a cracker, as the 2nds game will be too. I am looking forward to watching.

Respect your opinion Flavio and perhaps it was not the right place to raise the issue and I don't necessarily like the academic focus the school is taking either. I was not at the game, however, this is what the parent of an Aloys year 6 boy wrote on Facebook regarding what his son told him about the game that his son watched, 'the blue and gold army cheered every tackle the 1st XV made and every scrum won. The other team just cheered when points were scored'. The parent went onto say he and his mates had a great time supporting the 1st XV. That's what school pride is about!

Personally, I was against having a tiered rugby system given the wonderful tradition and history of the CAS in all sports. I think now that for the sake of injuries it is sensible. Honestly, I actually thought the criticism of certain schools was not warranted, but until I saw that program you posted I now think otherwise. I don't like the way things seem to be headed in Rugby in the CAS and I back Aloys 100%. People who went to the game may disagree with what the year 6 boy said and they can put on this site what they like. I recon though the year 6 boy is not far wrong.

I think you will find that Barker have a chant for every scrum, even getting the youngsters involved in the crowd and not just the older boys. Also is it feasible to cheer every tackle? With Barker scoring every 5 minutes why wouldn't they just cheer the try's?

looking forward particularly to the forwards' clash, with the GPS pack having a Joeys front row and a Riverview 4-5-8 with another Joeys flanker up against a Waverley-dominated CAS pack, it will be the clash of the Catholics.

GPS 1 should get up here, riverview forward back to advanced and goodness gracious that paddy burns makes me watch in awe. Feel 7 Dempsey from lane cove should get some recognition in the forward pack for the higher teams, scores most weeks and carries till he drops. Can't wait for thursday....

Completely disagree....the CAS pack will dominate at scrum and lineout in my opinion. The breakdown battle will be absorbing, but I firmly believe the back 3 of GPS will be so tired from tackling the big CAS boys that their impact will be lessened. Allsopp is a good 8 but no where near big enough to be a damaging 8 and plays more like an extra 7. The backs are pretty evenly matched IMO but I'm hoping the weight of possession works in CAS's favour.
Good luck to all the boys involved.

Agree Axe,

I hope the weather forecast is wrong as a wet game may well even things up, and ruin some great free flowing rugby.

If the weather is kind, then this CAS pack is the best I have seen, fullstop, and should thump the geeps from pillar to post.

Hey WLF - the forecast is not good for the next couple of days, and the conditions will have a large bearing on the outcome. We all know that main Knox field is a great venue, and drains well; however there are a few factors that the teams wont be used to:
  • A night game, on a cold wet evening: not sure when these players last played in the evenings (besides training)
  • 3 x games will be played prior to the main gig,
  • Whether individuals will play their natural game (or suppress it?) in these conditions,
  • What the game plans will be from both coaches.
There's a bit of hoopla in the GPS thread about the View #10 being in 2nds, however I believe the GPS game plan has dictated their selections. GPS will initially play a no-frills, gain-territory-and-apply-pressure style.

They will be *hoping* that the Waverley forwards will try and play a natural game - and they are also hoping that the occasion, pressure, expectations will provide an atmosphere for them to create errors - and errors that will be capitalised by GPS.

Why else would you have a steady and reliable #10, who can safely kick goals and play the percentage game - aka the Scots #10 over the View lad? Thats not to say that he wont play expansively, but not initially.

The key will be how CAS reacts - and from the start as well. The tight 5's will be doing it tough all game, and for me the game will depend on which number 7 can win the most turnovers - either with, or without a penalty. If the forward offloads are to occur, then they need to grind it out first. Mistake free play is essential.

I have read a few posts about scrum dominance, but to be frank, thats irrelevant at U-19 level especially with the no pushing past 1.5 m rule (which many 1st XV refs do not appear to be adjudicating).

And speaking of refs, I just hope the ref assigned for the game just lets them play - too many these days appear to crave the limelight and referee as such...

Hi Rugby Ref,

Having met you last week that dispels any myth that some may think this is a stich up.

You, as a ref, would see things that us sideline "experts" don't, but I will reply and do my best.

I have always refrained from commenting on individual boys unless it's positive, remember we are talking about boys/young men.
The view #10 has always been extremely good, and will reappear shortly, at a higher level IMO, as will the view #12 (no doubt about that either). But all power to the GPS boys who are representing the GEEPS Thursday night. A star may be unearthed!

Everything you have said about Thursday game may well happen, conversely, the opposite may well happen, HA, as I expect.
So here's my response to your post.

The CAS forward pack is packed (pardon the pun) with a serious bunch of boys who are very very big, aggressive, and very talented. Ball runners galore, line jumpers galore, etc. So based on that, if that ability plays out, then the GPS boys will feel a relentless machine coming at them. So far this year that type of play has realistically led Barker and Waverley to wear down teams, and the points flow.

As you well know "hoping" by the GPS team, is exactly that, having watched these particular Waves boys incessantly over many years, and also a number of the CAS boys, in particular, the Barker and Knox boys, this team on paper, and performance, is the real deal. Furthermore, a number of boys from the Cranbrook team and a select number of boys from Trinity, and potentially Aloys, would normally make this team, but such is the talent this year.

I think the game plan for both sides will be as follows.

The GPS forwards will focus on the break down, they are smaller, talented, and very mobile.
The CAS forwards are a wrecking machine in set play, line outs, and ball running.

The back lines look very similar in talent, both teams have a number of talented boys out, but those who are in well deserve it.

As always, we trust that the ref, a job I admire/couldn't/wouldn't do, is a special job, and thankless, BUT just hope he gets most calls right, is consistent, and yep, let's it FLOW.
I expect it may be Andrew Coorey, as we have discussed how good he is, but have no idea.

Might see you soon, like the fact that you are talking to us, it's all good clean fun, and we all luv it!

Cheers!
