Australian Bid for 2027 World Cup

Hard to tell but think they'd be getting a fair bit of Government money to help with the bid.

Definitely will have a significant degree of Govt. backing. Was the reason for much of the pitch around economic impact from my perspective. The average punter doesn't care but if you can convince a Govt. to put up $250m for a $2.5b return then you're getting somewhere.

See this word here, Dan - I thought you didn't know it.

But after 7000 posts you suddenly just decide to throw it in!

What's going on, man? You've been foxing all along! :D

I haven't seen 7000 posts on Rugby World cup. Hey but I don't count the same as you Kiap;).
Mate I spend my whole life wondering about things I don't know about:p

I was of the understanding that SAANZA voted as a block, I thought that was part of the reason Argentina pulled out for 2027.

I can't see Russia getting it, wouldn't be a great look for rugby.

USA rugby are bankrupt so couldn't put it together.

Qatar would make sense from their point of view as they have all the stadia for the football world cup. Not from a rugby point of view, unless they promise a long term investment in rugby.

Mate SANZAAR do normally vote in a block, why there was so much angst that Aus voted against NZ having 2011 WC

Mate I sure NZ will be voting for Aus and they will get it, there are some boards you can trust,:p

Guaranteed stadiums:
Suncorp (Qld)
Stadium Australia (NSW)
New Sydney Football Stadium (NSW)
Optus Stadium (WA)

Likely stadiums
AAMI Park (Victoria)
BankWest Stadium (NSW)
Marvel Stadium (Vic)
MCG (Vic)

Possible stadiums
McDonald Jones Stadium (NSW)
Robina Stadium (Qld)
Canberra Stadium (ACT) - although apparently not without an upgrade

If they are hoping for averages of over 40k people they can't play many games at stadiums like Robina, AAMI Park etc.

2003 Stadiums were:

Stadium Aus
SFS
Marvel
Suncorp
Subiaco
Adelaide oval
Townsville
Canberra
Gosford
Launceston
Wollongong

Would not be much different, I went to Adelaide for the weekend. They had Wallabies v Namibia and Ireland v Argentina in one weekend.

Marvel hosted quite a few games, including a Quarter final.

I would not expect the MCG to host any games before the final, if it was to get another game it would need to be Wallabies or NZ v the best opponent in the group.

Tournament has moved on since then, minimum capacity semis and finals required, the nz "grass bank" look doesnt appeal to the world wide audiences they want to engage like the US.
Forget Tassie it doesnt have the right stadium.
Stadium Aus 70k
SFS 45k
Bankstown 30k
Marvel 55k or AAMI 30K cant see Geelong getting anything
Suncorp 52k Cairns or Sunshime coast options if they have new stadia
Subiaco, demolished now the new Perth stadium 60k
Adelaide oval Its a poor rectangular ground but Adelaide will never get a better stadium under current govt than Hindmarsh which is too small, Adelaide wont be ignored come WC 55K
Townsville 30K
Canberra will the new city stadium be built by then? 25k
Gosford Not so sure this will get a gig, its getting really old and not many rugby fans Id say Newcastle will replace it 30k
Launceston Nope
Wollongong Probably needs that grass bank covered 23k
Thats 10-12 stadiums and probably enough

They fill stands for college football games due to a variety of social and cultural reasons which don’t necessarily translate to filling stands for Rugby Union. A one off game featuring the All Blacks isn’t evidence enough that they could fill stands for the other 19 teams which feature in the RWC.

I seriously doubt they're actually targeting 2027. It's more a statement of intent. They would be far more serious about 2031. This would give MLR 9 more years to build their league which is headed in the right direction.

True, but Japan seemed to do pretty well with crowds.
As WCR says, looks like USA will try for 2031. I really be very surprised if anyone comes up with a stronger bid than Aus will, and seems most of Rugby world are looking at it as a lift for game in Aus.

I’d argue Japanese rugby and USA rugby are at opposite ends of the spectrum, Japanese rugby has a deep cultural root in the social fabric, USA rugby is still in the gimmick phase of acceptance.

Japan is 20-30 years ahead of USA in terms of establishing rugby as a recognised sport with clear pathways. Without pathways for development it’s a missed opportunity for a county to host the RWC IMO
