Interesting times ahead, a lot of what I call level two codes have moved and are in play across newer platforms. Will be interesting to see how we stack up against the Super Cars to 7 & the A-L to 10.

To hard to compare level 1 to say level 3 as an example as the sheer amount of media and hype will in and of itself create a bigger market.

Super Cars and A-L I think both are currently running. Super Cars me think leads the pack of the level two sports

BTW my sports levels are.

Level 1, AFL, NRL, Cricket, Tennis

Level 2, Super Cars, Super Rugby, A-League, Golf,

Level 3, Basketball, Netball, Horse racing,

Level 4, X sports, surfing, swimming

Level 5, the rest

Maybe this is just my bubble, but I've never considered tennis a level 1 sport. It's probably b-tier/level 2.
Would also swap Golf and Basketball, but that could just be with younger generations.

Have you seen how many people attend the races every weekend when its on? Definitely a Tier 1 'sport' in Australia, in fact Channel 7 has extended their coverage to show every race Saturday in 2022 across Vic, NSW and QLD I believe, rather than just the big carnivals.

Basketball definitely a Tier 2 sport now as well, Olympics went well for the Boomers, NBA fans are everywhere, even the NBL has been getting packed stadiums.

But rates in the toilet. Suffers a little from the same issue the A-League has. Why watch the local stuff when you have easy access to the best league(s) in the world. Netball should be considered a Tier 2 sport if you go off ratings. We'll have to wait and see what the A-League gets but previously on Fox they weren't T2.

I find this all a bit academic - as not sure our competition horse racing.

It’s probably more a complementary product to be honest, if there is such a thing. Lots of people used to go from Randwick to the SFS for the Tahs, and I’ve seen a similar correlation in Brisbane. Racing is definitely tier 1 though, the gambling dollar would verify that.

Levels based on what?
And horse racing isn’t a sport.
The inference would be crowds and viewership.

and yeah it is. The horses and riders are all athletes. You don’t have to like it but if motor racing qualifies then horse racing certainly does.

However, for this exercise I’d say confining it to team sports is a better metric.

Interesting point brought up in Breakdown other night that I hadn't noticed. Probably needed a little more thinking on opening weekend.
MP (Moana Pasifika) play Brumbies at Mt Smart on Friday and then Blues have got Drua Eden Park on Saturday? 2 Games in Auckland on opening weekend perhaps not a good idea, and as pointed out perhaps a double header Pacifika with both games at Eden Park or something may of been a better option?
Just a little thing I know but I think missed a great chance to promote the games?

The comparison with motor racing is not accurate. Best to compare horse racing with roulette. If gambling wasn’t involved, would it exist? Clearly no. There’s no junior carnivals out there (I don’t think) or development pathways - that don’t only exist for people to gamble on.

The junior pathways come more through the equestrian area, eg pony club, campdrafting etc, there are apprenticeships, and there still exists an amateur competition. It would exist without gambling but the prize money would be a lot lower, although sponsor ship would likely become the main revenue stream. Hugh Bowman for example was able to choose a jockey apprenticeship as his school sport when he was at Scots.

The equestrian comparison is not really any different to saying that go-carting is the junior equivalent to Formula 1.

That's a stretch I think KOB, think you will find things like Pony Clubs etc would be seen more as a lead into show jumping etc, would doubt whether it leads to either kids becoming jockeys or horse tr ainers very often at all. Horse racing as such would I doubt exist except in odd picnics in country if not for betting. It is only reason for it as we know it.

People actually watch races for a month every year. All other times it’s the event and not the sport that attracts people

Possibly, horse people are horse people for life. Campdrafting, barrel racing, etc are more analogous to a junior competition, but it's not like their going to put a bunch of 12 year olds on a 550kg animal at let them loose around a racetrack at 60 km/h.

Yep I know what you mean, I got nephew who is jockey, family pretty good friends with a few trainers and former jockeys, none of them were involved with Pony Clubs etc. But that is here in (well nephew bt marriage is Aussie) NZ, and in general maybe different in Aus.

Agree, it is all about the horse.

Car racing is the same, the car/mechanic/bank balance of the owner is the most important factor and I don't think it is a sport for the same reason I dont think horse racing is a sport.

They are both important industries and I have no issue people loving them
