QLD Colts 2022

Ruck n Maul

Herbert Moran (7)
GPS 7 tries to 2 over the bank, dominant in the first half and then it slowed up a bit, bank did well to score some late tries.

I’m told easts beat norths 5 tries to 2?? Makes for an interesting round 1 in a fortnight’s time.

Based on trial form the early pecking order would seem to be :

Souths
Easts
Brothers
Norths
UQ
Bond
GPS
Wests
Sunnybank

The top 3 would seem interchangeable

Spots 4 , 5 and 6 also interchangeable with the remaining 3 spots being as they are

Agree but only on trial form. I know some clubs are keeping powder dry for some reason and also giving a few youngsters a run higher up than where they will end up playing ie UQ have had 5-6 colts play in each prem grade trial

Yep they certainly looked a younger side on Saturday

All forwards though where I would guess half will stay up in Prems - Reggies and half will come back. UQ dominated the set piece in 1’s without a starting lock and a starting 8. Yet, despite set piece dominance and fair ball opportunity it was a genuine 4 tries to 2 loss with no shortage of possession and a working set piece against what looked like Brothers starting team when you look at the team sheet.

Getting 3 forwards back will help but not enough to tilt a result like this. Or even against what projects to be an equal pack at Easts , and some firepower at Souths with a Junior Wallaby pairing at halves in Willem Johnstone and Harry McLaughlin Phillips.

Remember, against Jeeps it was only 4 tries to 3 at three quarter time (and with a bombed try to Jeeps) before UQ ran away with 3 tries in the last 10 minutes when Jeeps had emptied their bench

Souths and Easts have also got 2 or 3 to come back and possibly Norths as well.

For now the order is about right and where the interchangeability in the spots are.

Well there you go. That was my initial mail that I shared a couple of months ago that I copped some stick on. The young fella hasn’t played a lot of competitive Rugby for 8-9 months at a guess. Wherever he plays, for his sake, he needs to be playing competition games

If Lynagh does play a bit and with a couple of backline tweaks, and, with two of Lachie Shaw, Will Robinson and Michael Van Der Schyff coming back (a starting lock and a starting 8) then I would absolutely put UQ back in an interchangeable top 3 with Easts and Souths

If Lynagh plays half a dozen games then yes. Depends on a few other things that need to resolve properly as well. For example, the young fella that started at 3 against Brothers last week needs to stay at 3. Raw in general positional play with a bit to learn but one of the best natural scrummagers I’ve seen in a while. I’m not sure he was in the plans as a pencilled starter. Stuff like this that with adjustments they should be right in it. A guy like Ben McMahon in the backs could emerge as a Jock Cambellesque player in Colts 1 this year and if he carries his preseason form into the season then look out . Gotta make sure the ball finds him though.

Ben McMahon has to be one of the most under rated and under valued players in the Colts age group.

You can also add Jake Tierney, Lachie Phelley, Fin Hearn and more to that list potentially. UQ will be right in the top of the table mix.

I think Finn Hearn is too old for colts now
The other two would be looking to play Prem Grade seeing they have had 2 years in colts already I reckon.

How about Kalani Thomas as a colt halfback - still eligible
Mac Grealy at fullback - still eligible
Hugo Percival - trialled at Prems still eligible

UQ could stack it up if they wanted to.

Pheely played Prems last year in spots and spent a fair amount of time in Reggies. He’s not coming back and I would think Tierney stays up as well. Perceval is part of a quality U20 lock mix with Shaw, Robinson and VDS Jr. I have VDS Jr and Robinson as the best of them. I equate Mr Perceval pretty similarly to Easts’s Jacob Blyton. They were same same coming through as juniors as well for mine but edge to Perceval in line out , especially defensive line out. Volume work rate players but without the athleticism or skill of VDS or Robinson.

I would play VDS as a no 6. The other 3 cover 2 x locks and a No 8. bloody good lineout options and should be a scrum to dominate with Ward, Hay, Wiggins and Swane vying for Front row spots.

Ward is a long way off playing Colts 1 regularly. He is strong, very strong with a lot of upside. Has a lot to learn about, breakdown, ball security, especially in contact.
Matt Ingram and Co will do a good job of developing him.
Watching the trials UQ are much better than they were last year. More cohesive, better coordination and game sense. The boys look to be enjoying their footy.
On paper they don't have the star power they had the last few years. They have depth in the tight 5 and back row. Outside backs and Centre are a concern. If Ethan McFarland is injured they may struggle.

There are a few players in Colts 2 worth noting; Connor Hayes looks like he has found his position at 10. Some clean front foot ball would allow him to show his talents. A little bit more time in the saddle and he should be knocking on Colts 1.

I think UQ will be in and around the top 4, (Based on the limited amount of trials I have seen)
Brothers look strong, with depth and the usual brethren physicality. GPS have lost the physical edge they had over the last few years. Especially if Howse and Baker are playing up. It will be a test of their coaches ability to get them into the 4. I have heard Easts and Souths are strong., Norths are competitive and Wests are disappointing. I guess next week we will have a much better gauge.

Mick Heenan was on stan's new club rugby show this week, Lynagh apparently has a hamstring injury at the moment. He said they were going to play it by ear but he expects he'll play premier grade this year. Sounded like a start in colts but they won't hesitate to move him up as soon as they think he's ready.

I’m led to believe UQ have a very handy new tight head that finished grade 12 last year and has apparently been in the starting side for reserve grade for the past 3 trial games. I watched him against against our Reggie’s scrum last weekend and he looks to have loads of talent.

Name is Ward ex BBC but the one you are talking about is Swane ex nudgee the year before and played colts last year
