Waratahs 2022

I really like Dylan Pietsch, he works hard and he has lots of potential BUT he needs to back himself. he did the same thing against the Reds early in the season. run straight mate! He has the size and I would have backed him to score that try.
Yup. He does a lot of work in support of other players, but in the Waratahs he's demonstrated that he's not a finisher. Numerous times the ball has gone out to him when we need a finisher and he plays a support-player role instead. He's a great person to have on the field, but I'm not so sure winger is his position, going by what he's demonstrated so far.

Agreed, used to play as a backrower until he made the switch to 7's. I don't think he has the finishing ability the Tahs need. Probably best suited to the bench covering whatever is required.

It's his first season though, I wouldn't rule out him being told to be more selfish and go for the goal being all that he needs. I'd like to know if he's been told that or not and if he's working on it, or being encouraged to keep playing as he's playing.

Yep to me Pietsch not offering great value at wing. First season as someone pointed out but will be struggling to retain his starting position without improvement at this point.

Newsome has had a good season, but IMO he hasn't been that bad in other years. Some on here want every Tah to be a Wallaby, but in the real world that just ain't going to happen. Every Super side needs good, reliable Super rugby level players, and Newsome and Sinclair are two very good examples of that

I liked Newsome at the Force(?) and his first year at the Tahs. Seemed quite dangerous. Seemed to lose it a bit the last couple years. Even a bit of his pace so I wonder if he was carrying some niggles or playing mind games with himself.

He is looking fast this year, more comfortable and playing much improved rugby. Happy for him as he clearly has natural ability and his teammates get around him.

He contributes and is delivering few errors

Pietsch is contributing no more and making more errors

Pro rugby is harsh

I wouldn't categorise Newsome as someone who is low-error.

He's definitely having a better season this year but he certainly makes his fair share of errors. Look at Pasitoa's try on the weekend - Newsome was in position and got totally bumped off.

He's a solid player but more in the placeholder variety or ideally a guy who is squad depth rather than someone who is regularly starting in your backline.

I must say I'm surprised at Newsome's worth ethic this year. I never really rated him but credit where credit is due, who knows he could keep improving.

I also get that it is easy to critique as a fan but hey, I think we are entitled to a little bit.

Pietsch will get another chance this weekend, and again I like the guy but I think he should be on notice from the coaching staff. Is anyone else breathing down his neck? Funa, Turner? Maybe not but I would like to see Tristen Rielly get a chance.

I think we will not see any changes to the team this week, they will want a settled squad against the Chiefs

You don't think Harrison will return at fullback?

I'm not too concerned about Harrison's size, he defends like a much bigger man, and isn't afraid to run the ball into contact hard when that's the best option. Yes, he probably would prefer 10, but we have three of them, and of those I think Harrison makes the best 15. I would also have him on the paddock whenever possible, some may disagree but I think he's the best goal-kicker in professional Aus rugby.
Looking at those wing options, another is Ramm once he returns from injury, who would be the quickest of the lot, is a sound defender and has a big boot.

Ironically Pietsch has replaced Newsome as the ' placeholder' outside back of the Waratahs - the player you reluctantly select because you don't have any better options.

Newsome offers more than Pietsch at this level and surprisingly has arguably more upside.

Oh Yes! I forgot about Ramm, I really rate him!

You are probably right about Harrison, and I am happy to see him in the team
