ATF, thanks for putting that together. Broadly agree with most of your choices. A good spread across most schools.

Not sure you're going to get 2 5/8ths from Kings selected!

As Basten (K) was GPS2 last year, I would imagine he would get the nod over Stiel (E) at tight head.

I think the Joeys V Shore Round 1 clash will determine who your other front rowers are. Joeys have had a dominant front row so I would expect Moxham (THP) and Heaven (Hooker) will be there somewhere.

2nd Row and Back Row selections will have players compromising on preferred positions. Some back rowers may be playing in 4 or 5 jerseys!

No room for Oscar Jorgensen (J) in your first 3 teams?? He's been a stand out in my mind.

Also Will Perkins was GPS1 in 2021. Tough to find a spot in 1s in 2022.

Hopefully TAS and Grammar get a few selected in Blue and White. Cant see any from High making the grade
Saxon Fenwick has been playing 12 for kings this season but certainly knows how to play 10 and has been there a couple times this season, and he was just too good to leave in the 4's, although I could see the Riverview 10 Joe Dillion getting the nod over him for the 3's team.

Perkins was a tough one I think I may put him in my 1's over Siteni, mostly for the lack of games Siteni has played this year

Joeys front row has been nothing special, besides Barrett who I think has equal impact as max Jorgensen and oscar Jorgensen is a good player but I couldn't put him over any of the other wingers I named.
Surely Oscar will be picked. It is just a question of which team. I haven’t seen Shore, Kings or Newington play though , if there are multiple wingers that are better than Oscar then the CAS is in trouble!

TIPS for ROUND ONE.

Tips Week 6.jpg

Now we have the trials out of the way we look towards the season proper after we all have a break this long weekend. I can tell you Joeys is so looking forward to the break as they had up 400+ boys unwell with the flu that tends to ravage a boarding school. being typical Joeys, one in, all in.

For this and every other round (and rep games) I have decided to add the points spread for every game.
When you make your selection you simply add by how much.

Example-

Scots v Newington. I choose Scots +12
Kings v Riverview. I chose Kings +30
Shore v Joeys. I chose Joeys +15

If you "beat the spread" (by being within 5 points OVER the winning margin) you will receive 5 points. A win is still worth 3, a draw is 1.
So every game you can try and predict the spread. MAXIMUM points you can win on a round is 15!

YOU HAVE UNTIL MIDNIGHT FRIDAY 17 JUNE to get your tips in.
If you don't then it is the away team with a points spread of +12

Surely Oscar will be picked.
Perkins did seem to give Oscar a bit of trouble on the weekend, having resulted in 2 collar-grab-tackles when Perkins challenged him the outside There's no doubt about Oscar's ball running ability but from the two games of Joeys I've seen, defensively he looked a tad shakey.

Ok, lets change tack a bit and ask for your thoughts on the following.

Many here know I am in the culinary game and enjoy the food offerings at various schools.
So, just to keep it fun, what is the best food your school has to offer at your home games?
Open to all schools.

Forget the food starting your Saturday night off with 6 beers at Jacks bar is never a good move

Just heard that Finnlay Bartlett from Scots year 10 has signed a big NRL contract with the Manly Sea Eagles. Congrats to the kid, however another very good union kid gone to Rugby League. How does this stop? I know he's only year 10 but cant understand why a kid of his ability is in the Scots 2nds. Maybe Darth Lambert and his Trusty storm troopers can name some changes in the BH death star for Round 1.

It is such a shame as this kiddy has been at the College since his Prep school days. This is a homegrown product. Who got in his ear? He has playing interchange for Manly this year. Such a pity as has been playing club rugby since he was 7.

RA simply needs to get its act together. There are 2 issues, 1) marketing, if you can’t convince a youngster that the career opportunity in RU > RL then you aren’t trying (global game, total career earnings, Olympics etc) 2) Make pathways attractive and clear, I know that a lot of high quality Union players that are contracted but don’t get enough playing time at the right level in Australia early in their careers. As a result their development stalls. Perhaps the solution to 2 is pay them to go to Europe early in their career, allow them to keep the RA payment plus what ever they get in Europe, develop their game and then return to Australia in time to play Wallabies U20 and enter the Super system after that.

Hi OlderSlower

Agree with both your points. point 1) is a no brainer. Some kids want to play league and it gets a lot of local coverage but how you can't promote a global game etc is not trying hard enough.
As far as point 2 goes, there arn't enough opportunities for top flight young rugby players here. Shute Shield ( even though a good spectator and local comp ) is not for up and coming 16/18 + year olds and won't compete with money or limelight that League has. Some will go to Colts but compare that with NRL contract and it's not as attractive. Waratahs and Super Rugby is the next level and you only have a limited squad.
Possible Solution is what you have suggested: Set up an academy for elite rugby players ages 16-20 and scholarship them overseas ie NZ, Europe, SA or Japan etc. Give them educational allowances as well as playing opportunities with top flight overseas clubs and bring them back to play for Australia when needed. You do that for the top 10-15 players of each year. I'm sure there is enough money to keep these players.
Example : When Aus Football was going well in early 2000's most Aus players were playing overseas in EPL,Serie A, Bundesliga etc. They all came through the AIS and then found there way to os clubs, gained experience and came back for national duty. Hence why we qualified for WC 2006. Since then this pathway has dried up therefore we are struggling to qualify again.
The comp in Aus and opportunities for elite young rugby players is not great here. OS is where they need to go and gain experience. AR needs to promote this as a pathway.
Any other thoughts/options ?

Its a contract till 2025 when one year out of school. Therefore most likely playing for the Manly SG Ball side (u19)

Good points but its much more basic than that. Schoolboys and juniors who are excellent players but do not make Gen Blue (for example) are instantly forgotten and discarded. There is no pipeline. No development path. No communication. No incentive. No nothing. No wonder league gets all the best junior rugby players.

I agree with your premise that there needs to be more depth to development opportunities. However the players getting tagged by the NRL would all win Gen Blue deals. Speaking to a number of families and players who are in the process of making the big decision it is very apparent that the lack of playing opportunity at an appropriate level is a major issue. That is why I like the OS option, an ideal solution might be placement in div 2 teams in France, the standard is high and the better teams are challenging for tier 1 status.

It will be a few thousand $$$ and no other entity can sign him for a few years.
Wasn't Finnlay with Souths?
Obviously that will rule out any Gen Blue program for the next three years?
Not sure on the above point, however their are some good points up and above around keeping union talent. Overseas comps are very strong. I know South Africa has a big issue in the Craven Cup SA Under 18 comp whereby allot French clubs sign and poach SA best talents before they can play senior Currie Cup comp. Its just not an Aussie issue.

I’m assuming a lot of the boys who go to league are looking simply at short term financial incentives rather than potential long term international exposure. Also aren’t there more NRL teams than Super 12 teams in Australia so more chances of playing?

Its not just NRL, its the feeder clubs, SG Ball etc They hook them in early and have room to give contracts to everyone, they have hundreds of opportunities, tonnes of cash, and they are willing to spend on dozens of players just to find one Cameron Murray, Katoa or Sua'ali'i.
Money talks and until Shute Shield clubs are financial, have their own assets and can become more professional to attract talent, we have no chance. We must have a professional and financially sound club scene to attract players to the game.
Also we currently are dominated by school systems which inherently excludes the majority of players from real development pathways, even then we only have a handful of Gen Blue spots. SO if you ask a talented kid if he wants $80k to play for the Wentworth Wolves with the potential to play for Manly, or get a free t-shirt and two training sessions with the Gen Blue team (and being behind 25 guys already in a que for the two spots on the Waratahs roster) before going back to Norths Colts twice a week, what would you do?
Bartlett faced that choice, so did Crichton and all the other lost talent.

Maurice Whelan was in the 1st XV at Joeys when he was 14 years old (year 9 today)
There was no 6th year back then.

He played in three premiership teams in 1933, 1934 and 1935 (captain)
He finished up the season by reaching a record points score for a G.P.S. player, 131 points in the seven competition games, made up of 16 tries, 7 penalty goals, and 31 conversions.

In today's points it would 163 points in seven games an average of 23 points per game!

Quite a feat for Whelen of Joeys. Newington’s legendary Johnny Taylor (NSW cricketer and Wallaby) played 1st XV and 1st VI for 6 years each, no idea how old he was at his first appearances possibly 12 or 13 which of course would be unheard of today. Do any of the schools have lower age limits for their 1sts teams across sports? TKS had a few year 8s in their 1sts cricket recently but even year 9 in any 1sts team in any sport is quite prodigious.
