I’m not sure the format this year, previous years there’s been NSW schools 16’s which then goes on to the gen blue program I assume? Correct me if I’m wrong

Total Bullshit,, what it says is that Newington College is a day school, where few few parents who reside in the Eastern Suburbs. Comments like this represent, nothing but a nasty Small Minded Campaign against Newington.So "TheMeadow" please understand the facts about Newington and the difficulties for Newington Families, traveling, to the Eastern Suburbs. before you comment again. Honestly, to blame it on Newington's culture, is just utter Bloody Crap. As it shows a complete ignorance of Reality. I have written about this issue before, to Scots supporters, but they still seem unable to intellectually, professionally or morally comprehend the issues involved.Particularly, the issues involving Travel for Newington Families.some of your supporters would rather indulge, in small minded point scoring.Unable/ unwilling to comprehend a Newington families perspective. By the way, the Parking at Scots is disgusting.
So you want talk about School culture. Particularly, as a Teacher. I have taught at both Newington and Scots as teacher, be it on a casual basis, many years ago, while completing Master of Arts, in Defence Studies, International Relations and Military History. The Newington boys love me, for passing on my Academic Knowledge. The Scots boys, I may as well being, talking to a brick wall,a most disappointing experience. I would't be the only Teacher with GPS experience, to state that Teaching at Newington was a professionally, rewarding experience in dealing with the sons of the gentrified Middle Class, from my Old School. I can't say the same about Scots.

I have brought this up with the Newington Headmaster directly a few times. What’s ironic is that despite having two Old Boys as brothers in law and a mother in law who was a Newington institution (she even has a House named after her) the Head seems almost oblivious to GPS culture and the concept of school spirit. He told me he doesn’t believe in forcing boys to attend First XV games and also told me ‘Newington will never be View or Joeys [in terms of boarding] so there is no use making boarders turn up either’.
He did also point out that since Newington families live all over Sydney it’s not easy for them to ferry boys half way across Sydney if they are not playing at the main away ground and he had no intention of putting on buses either (TKS where my nephews are does a great job of this). Even on Newington home games (apart from BND) crowd numbers are low and as an Old Boy from the 80s where it was compulsory for all boarders to attend all First XV games and for dayboys to attend a mnimum of 3 games/all home games this decline in ‘support’ is indeed very sad to see.

Definitely agree with this assessment of Scots Old Boys and their parochialism. I live very near the school (about 10 mins walking maximum). When chatting to Scots Old Boys on different occasions they have even said ‘I’ve never even heard of Newington, is it a state school?’ or words of a similar effect.

As passionate Old Boys like myself, we agree that it would be good to see more support for our GPS Rugby teams. For reasons B/W gives, this is not easy for the broader Newington community. At Scots, there is one ground on campus and only yr11/12 and 16A's play on it. The Silverbacks, mainly Yr 12 do hang around most of the time but when you have a game at 8am and exams on Monday it can take a toll. Little chance of junior teams coming from Cent Park etc to BH. So the crowd on Saturday was ok due to these reasons. Could it have been better. Of course but hopefully after this great victory, there'll be a better away crowd at HH. A couple of years ago, the student body at New created an official Cheer/Support group caled the first 16 made up of yr 12 leaders. When I heard about this, I did cringe at the the thought that this had happened however after watching these boys in action and supporting everything from Drama to the First XV, I love their passion, they travel and do try and gather support from the entire school. It's a good initiative. ( I guess Joeys have the luxury of having the first 800. I'm sure EVERY boy loves to turn up EVERY week and is not FORCED to )
Agree with DragonMan, if it's not being strongly "recommended " from the top, and I don't understand why not, it won't change. When Headmaster Rae and Sportsmaster MacLean were in charge, boys had to attend at least 3 senior GPS games. I think that was a very good balance and should be introduced. Now, each house has a home game that they attend.
There is no point in trying to talk to, educate or enlighten any Scots Boy about anything other than the their precious Eastern Suburbs. Just leave them in their Bubble ( bath ).

This is a common complaint with Scots being on the eastern edge of Sydney. Plus, public transport is not easy to there. (I know. I traveled from the Inner West to Scots for years by taking two buses and train in peak hour)
Joeys (being quite central) does see a healthy number of Newington and Riverview lads watching the big game. It is accessible for most and plus the kick ass BBQ keeps them coming back for more. Scots and Kings do turn up in numbers as well but they put on buses I believe. (Well that is what I thought anyway. The last time at Joeys I saw some "Brave hearted" Scots Boys flipping me the bird as their bus rolled by. Classy)
Attendance at Kings can be tough as well due to distance. But again, some schools put on buses.
Overall, I would give some schools some slack as travel for those who dont have mum/dad driving them or a school bus can be tricky.
Jeeez someone loves this school a bit too much… haha. I could tell u stories of boys from all over Sydney who attended kings that would travel by public transport for more then 2 hours to and from the 1st XV games, until they introduced school buses that were provided. Do newington offer that option? A bus back to school after the away games? I know shore, kings and joeys do and I can imagine Riverview and Scot’s would. CULTURE. The love of watching the 1st XV. Unfortunately, newington doesn’t have this, argue all you want but it’s just facts.

When I was at New we had students from Minto Heights, innner city, north shore to Wollongong and up to Berowra. Makes it hard to coral everyone, especially for away games. Unlike Shore and Scots etc where everyone lives in the same suburb and have similar cousins the Newington diaspora is huge.
I agree it is disappointing and the school needs to make a greater effort and build more rivalry/hatred against other schools. Scots is a good place to start. However, back in the day we did also enjoy watching the locals welcome the Shore boys to Stanmore Station.

Newington does not provide buses to games. They do provide buses to the HOR and it's compulsory for most years to attend. Also, the swimming and athletics events. These are all stand alone events with the boys having no other committments on these days. I don't particularly want my fees being "wasted" on buses. I can't afford higher school fees and it shouldn't be a school priority.
My son "wants" to watch his mates in the 1/2's. Did he "want" to watch every 1/2's game in YR7/8 ? Not really but "we" stayed a few times and he enjoyed it being with his younger mates watching the Big Boys.
TheMedow, CULTURE comes in all shapes, sizes and colours ( not just white ). Newington has been, is and will be black and white. Being the first school in Australia to play a rugby game, Newington has a little bit of history. Newington has, is and will be competitive in rugby and I think it's CULTURE is ok for the type of school it is. Agree, it does not have the CULTURE you want it to have but it does have it's own unique CULTURE and we as Newington supporters like it. No excuses given.

I have heard the same said about Knox and Barker, very regional schools. Shore because of its boarding house is less regional, but still very much a North Shore institution. Yes, the Scots attitude is associated very much, with an insulate Eastern Suburbs attitude.

Ok, I dont agree with this comment - I am an ex SBHS student, who still lives in the east, yet not all of us who live in the Eastern Suburbs parade around as if we are better than everyone else...
Maybe we should all just drop this 'class' flame-war-nonsense, and focus on the rugby instead..

To all the members discussing this topic, I respect all of your opinions, but I really think it is an unproductive discussion. ALL of the GPS schools have their advantages and disadvantages. Some people think that it is ridiculous that all Joeys boys have to attend the 1st and 2nd rugby matches. No problem. Send your son to another school. My son attended both Newington and Joeys. They were different schools with different cultures but he loved them both. We need to respect the differences between all of the schools because no school is perfect.
