As the Australian government looks to combat Chinese influence in the Pacific Islands, plans are afoot for rugby league to follow the lead of Super Rugby and have a Pasifika team in the NRL competition.

I had a bit of a chuckle at the comment from the Stan Sports boss saying rugby had been a strong performer for the platform for a while now.

That's because for a long time it was their only sport!! It is easy to be 1/1!

But in all seriousness this whole situation seems to be gaining momentum and fair to say the current state of the All Blacks hasn't let NZRU puff their chest out in retaliation.

Have no objection to the ARU going to Twiggy, as long as Twiggy does not try change the rules of the game like GRR . Wallabies need to play the same game as everyone else, if they are playing different they will never be competitive on the international arena.

But the rules in super rugby have been slightly different for years.

I think world rugby would only sanction the variations if they were trail laws anyway.

An interesting part of that article was from Ben Kimber (head of Stan Sport) who mentioned Two clubs in both QLD & NSW, finally someone stating the obvious issue the game has here of losing out to the other codes in regards to cross town rivallries & the ability of having a presence each weekend in your major markets.

How do you go about creating the rivalry? Do you keep the Reds and Tahs and add a side in each state?

With Queensland would you look to make it geographic and say have the second team up north?

Could we add NSW and QLD Country to the mix if we went our own way? Add Fiji and we've got an eight team comp.

I think the Country moniker is a little too broad for a professional brand. I also don't think we have to maintain the provincial format if we choose to go it aone.

I could be wrong, but I just don't see that working in Qld. The Reds are a state brand, end of. You can't have a second team in Qld with the first being the Reds.

If you have two teams in Qld then neither of those teams can wear the state brand. Or actually they both wear the Koala but neither can be "the Reds". There would be an opportunity to maintain the Reds academy with the two teams taking first opportunity on that talent.

It would open up an opportunity to include a SOO style game or short comp within the professional structure. THAT team could be the Reds.

NSW could add another team on top of the Tahs. In my experience they're pretty much exclusively seen as an Eastern Suburbs/North Shore team.

Probably Western Sydney. There's already a lot of antagonism there given how the Western Shute teams have been screwed around (on top of the existing friction between East and West). Could be the foundation of a great rivalry.

Plus Parra's a fast growing metropolitan area with an awesome stadium already built.

I think in that scenario, a few Brumbies fans heads would explode trying to justify how 46 players deserve positions in the Wallabies match-day 23.

I guess we could also just go the same route as the BBL and run with two Sydney and two Brisbane teams, again plus Fiji.
