Qld GPS Rugby 2022

TGS v ACGS - Toowoomba should win this one against the Church school up the range but it will be a close one.

BSHS v IGS - Ipswich will stay in the hunt with a win against the State school.

BBC v TSS - Southport should win this one but it is at Toowong so it should be a close one.

NC v BGS - Nudgee need to be careful here as Grammar are a solid team but I expect Nudgee will win all games again.

BSHS vs IGS . BSHS stunned the hapless GT Team last week who's expectations cannot meet their abilities at the moment.BSHS halves looked to carve up GT backline defence and champagne rugby by BSHS was the result. BSHS is no gimme Team. IGS have been improving each week and they showed their backline can carve up too. They look to have a Sam Walker Cloning machine at IGS, with another number 10 who exudes class and timing. Can they win away from Brassel, Time will tell. I am giving it to Ipswich who are building a formidable team each week but BSHS will be improved with new confidence. 17-7 Ipswich

BBC v TSS. Despite their win , I was disappointed with TSS last week , as I was with their performance against Nudgee. Despite the scoreboard they were blown apart in the stats against ACGS and the TSS class Full back? was the difference with Kicking and that Try that got them home- Individual brilliance. The TSS home crowd at last weeks game showed the school had spirit and must surely take some claim for their victory. BBC are playing home and would certainly have gained confidence against NC last week . TSS and BBC have now formed their own rivalry and BBC would adore an upset win- as they are owed one. BBC finished over the top of a Tired looking Nudgee last week and they now have momentum to stretch the TSS team. BBC home ground advantage and their improving momentum. I call a 21 all draw.

T'WOM'BA Vs Churchie. Chance of showers 80% of 10mm so warm 18 degrees with a 20km northwesterly wind. I am starting to think advantage Churchie. This weather will nullify the fleet footed TGS backs and play into the hands of the Churchie forward back who are not only light weight but fit- Herbert at Fullback for Churchie has a magnificent set of hands and will handle High Balls better than TGS. ACGS strong centres will also be nullified in attack but invaluable in defence and will provide excellent support to the Mobile forward pack running TGS all over the field and wearing them out.Churchie will also be very focused and hungry after dropping a game last week.
I think it will be a very tight slug match played in the forwards, but I think TGS will becoming down from the Downlands win, had very tough physical games in IGS, NC and TSS and I think their energy levels will be running close to empty. TGS are playing arguably the fittest pack in the comp this weekend who won't get bogged down in the wet red clay that is TGS No1 field. I think at the 55-60 min mark we will finally see the fatigue creep into the TGS pack and they won't be able to go with the pace of the light weight Churchie pack. Still Churchie needs to provide utmost respect to TGS, as TGS has all the making of a team who could go all the way. a TOUGH call but Churchie by 2 ( Conversion miss) 5-7. Much respect to TGS team emphasised.

NC vs BGS. NC is a class act and are a tough act to throw at home. RT loss was a massive campaign blow to the Blue and White and as a result this years team are mere mortals, capable of competing against all opposition but now Vulnerable. The BBC game showed a tired and demoralised Nudgee pack in the last 10 minutes, fending grimly off , a resurgent BBC outfit. NC faces at the end of the game said it all . Nudgee is just hanging in there, battle wearing and mentally shot. They need a weekend off via a Bye. Bad News Nudgee Bye is in week 9.

Grammar this year are truely the Dark "Blue" Horses. No one knows what to make of them. The in-form IGS team saw them off last week , but not before a big comeback to nearly steal it. The "Ghost of Sam Greene" still haunts Ross Oval and a summoning of that 2012 spirit, and this young inventive BGS team whilst Nudgee are mentally vacant, has an opportunity to Pull off another memorable win. Nudgee will need to be on their game. BGS school spirit is lifting finally and they feel like they have a real team. Excellent crowd support at home the other week. GT will be grinning in their Bye weekend and hoping BGS continues BBC good work of draining the energy from this Nudgee team, as GT focus their season towards a Tennyson Upset. A war weary Nudgee facing a refreshed GT at Tennyson - we can only dream what sort of Rugby that will produce.

This weekend will be a real test for both teams .15 -14 I am giving it to BGS (and the "Greene" Ghost on Ross)

Les Patterson is tipping:

IGS by 9
TSS by 15
TGS by 8
NC by 13 (Can't understand the hype about BGS. They have only beaten State High and Terrace; Lost to IGS and Downlands and yet to play any of the tough competitive schools.)

Anyone watched much of State High?

I only saw bits of today but every time I did their 10 looked dynamite. Anyone know much about him?

Is this the lad Reg?

Is this the lad Reg?

Impressive - not unlike Sam Walker as someone said earlier. No doubt already signed to an NRL club.

To Norselander's comments, which I appreciate, although I'm not 100% sure the rain will help Churchie. Their pack were pushed back repeatedly by the Nudgee pack but the Nudgee backs lost the plot after RT left the field and started floating expansive passes to a rushing Churchie defence. At one point Nudgee rolled a maul for close to 40 metres in the last 7 minutes of the game to win them a penalty which Nudgee slotted to put them in front. I think Toowoomba's forwards were closer to Nudgee's forwards or even on par and so I think the rain might support Toowoomba. Interested to hear counter thoughts.

Another clean sheet for all teams in all grades last weekend for Nudgee. They have lost only one official game all season which was against Churchie's 1sts in the last couple of minutes of the game at the end of a long day concerning 29 games (29 wins 1 loss) but clean sheets against TSS, TGS and BBC in all games in all grades. The scores again in the lower age groups including the A teams were again mostly above 50 and some times above 70.

Hey Rugby Man,

A couple of good points in your observations. I totally agree that Nudgee scrum had the better of the lighter Churchie pack and this was the most disappointing aspect, of Churchie's victory. The Maul you spoke about , I recall was also an impressive drive some 30-40 metres up field and Churchie seemingly had no answer.- It was truely an impressive forward play and it was the first time we saw what the Nudgee Pack could do - they were an irresistible force. How frustrated the forwards must have been when the backs took control from the back, looped the ball into the hands of the Churchie Winger for him to reverse the 40 metres in seconds and then another 30 metre to score a 70m intercept try under the posts. Sort of defeated the purpose of that artistic maul- agree? Enough to turn a Nudgee prop off his 5 course dinner.

Nudgee scrum was certainly dominant but I have written elsewhere that Churchie adapted to their weakness and rapidly cleared the ball through 1st channel scrum to use Crash Balling Centres to set up a platform for the next phase- they adapted . On the other aspects of the game, I would have to say Churchie Line out dominated and starved Nudgee of any opportunity to win wayward ball.I have to agree that Nudgee forward pack in the scrum was dominant and the Maul on that particular occasion was more than impressive. There is nothing wrong with Nudgee forward pack , other than battle fatigue at this stage of the season.

When Churchie turned up last week against TSS , It was pleasing to see that a lot of work had gone into fixing the scrum exploited so well by Nudgee, to the point where Churchie ended up dominating the TSS scrum to the tune of Multiple tight heads against the Giant pack that is TSS and TSS were repeatedly pushed back and splintered late in the game. I am sure any fair minded opposition would agree when watching the replay.

TGS definitely turned up in their game against Nudgee and gave the Nudgee pack a lesson, and then Nudgee in turn pressured Churchie who then pressured TSS who the week before pressured TGS. ........ and around and round we go.

I have written that I have huge respect for TGS but I have also noticed that they are not as well drilled as the Nudgee TSS and Churchie packs. They do not appear as organised and thinking ahead of how they can move forward. Their Pods are not always in position when the ball is spitting out and simply are not as polished as the big three. TGS are however tenacious and gutsey with a high work rate even if slightly less polished. TGS have got away with that to this point, playing the bigger heavier packs but Churchie is a different style of pack, and I think TGS will struggle at the 55-60min mark to counter them. Remember that this is likely on a damp red clay track , albeit home ground, after having played out of their skins against IGS, NC ,TSS and DOWNLANDS, and we are expecting them to keep pace with the premiership leaders, who have already the biggest scalp of the season that TGS could not quite get, but also ACGS are smarting from a Gold Coast Loss and hungry for redemption. ....and looking at last week, their pack at last is appearing to be firing on all cylinders.

Dont get me wrong , TGS at TGS is the toughest assignment and this year the TGS team is class. Churchie should be under no illusion that it will be toughest game yet, but the rewards for Churchie to come away with a win would certainly elevate their chances of premiership glory. However they would know TGS is a big threat, and could easily get a win and if that happens, a defeated Churchie will always have that WIN on Main Oval -forward dominated or not, so they can't lose either way.

Yes the Royal and Navy Blues v the Cambridge and Oxford Blues should be a great match on Ross on Saturday. I went to the last game Grammar won there (2012) and it was one of the best rugby occasions I have ever been to. Sometimes its just as good when the other side wins. I've never seen a school boy match like it before nor since (I couldn't attend the Nudgee v TSS match in 2018 but I heard this was also an outstanding occasion). An amazing day for Grammar to get up, and a proud day for Nudgee to host such an occasion.

It’s been a tough start to the season for BBC but expect a TSS ambush at Miskin tomorrow afternoon.
