Wallabies 2023

Interesting read from Rugby Pass on their Wallabies Player Ratings from the full test season.

Tight Five

Loose Forwards

Halfbacks and 10s

Centres

Outside Backs
Noah Lolesio 6.5? As our best.... I must have missed his good games.

Thin at centre? Surely not.

Kerevi and Ikitau standouts obviously, but Kerevi will be coming back from a long injury lay off.

After that, all the other centres are either coming back from injury or out of form. I wouldn't say centre is a position we are flooded with quality options that match what Kerevi and Ikitau give us.

We are in that situation in several positions, apart from locks. It is hard to imagine that all our ducks will line up and we can put all our best players into the RWC squad as injuries and availability may impact several of them. Not sure the rotation policy will protect all the players.

The kid is 23 and he’s unhappy he’s not there after not exactly lighting it on fire in his opportunities?
Yet a lot of others who have struggled (Gordon, Holloway, Poreki, Paisami etc) all still get picked regardless

Anyone would be pissed with Rennie's coin toss selections

It's not a coin toss though. We've had issues at all the positions the guys you have listed play at whether it is form, injuries or both.

Meanwhile we've had Rob Valetini who plays the same position as Harry Wilson who has been available for pretty much every game and has been our best player this season.

It's not a mystery why Harry Wilson isn't getting to play more test rugby.

Gleeson over him in the squad? Wilson didn't get a shot in Aus A.

No mystery why he isnt starting 8. The rest of his treatment is a bit average though.

Wilson was unlucky not to go on the EOYT. He didn't get a shot for Australia A because he was part of the main squad, couldn't join the Australia A squad late because of COVID rules and then Gleeson was outstanding and took his spot on the EOYT.

I think that is definitely unlucky for Wilson but likewise, Gleeson took his chance and he deserved his spot on the EOYT. The logic for Wilson to go on the EOYT anyway despite him not really delivering each time he's had an opportunity didn't really hold up.

I mean, Gleeson wasn't that great?

He was on the Australia A tour.

I can certainly understanding Rennie wanting to take a look based on that rather than sticking with a known quantity that he has consistently decided isn't playing at the level required.

Consistently? That’s a cop out. He never had consistent selection, was either played out of position or haphazard selection

Consistently as in Rennie has consistently dropped him pretty quickly each time he has played for the Wallabies.

I'm not weighing in on whether Rennie's view on Wilson is fair or not but it's become pretty clear that Wilson isn't delivering what he is looking for.

In that light it wasn't surprising he opted for Gleeson after his play for Australia A on the Japan tour.
Disagree.

What do you disagree on here? If you compare the number of players tried or rotated at 2, lock, 6, 9, 12 versus number 8 which Valetini has locked down as his spot with an outstanding season they are very different situations.

I suspected that wilson was told, again, to listen to what he has been asked to develop and demonstrate he has taken onboard the feedback.

He was asked to demonstrate footwork in contact. Against the AB's, he built up a head of steam to run deliberately at 2 of their largest units with a face full of rage.

Harry Wilson's problem is that he is competing for the No 8 jersey when he is a much more effective No 6. He hasn't got the footwork to break the line or bend the gain line when trucking the ball up in centre field the way Rob Valetini does. And like it or not, that is the way Dave Rennie wants his No 8 to play.

Harry's skills with the ball are more in terms of offloading and putting supports away. A task he performed beautifully in the No 6 jersey at U20s in a team that very nearly won the Championship. He was a standout i that tournament, and I reckon he would still be at least in the squad if he was more able to show his running and support play down the blindside rather than be a battering ram in the middle. He doesn't have any defence issues and I seem to recall seeing him operating well in lineouts. He has the skills, but is playing the wrong position in Rennie's world.

Your comments sounded like you were.

Rennies treatment towards Wilson is quite extraordinary compared to others in the squad who are rewarded with selection despite inconsistency or ill-discipline

I can’t fathom that guys like Gordon are rewarded weekly but Wilson is banished.
