Wallabies 2023

Marce

Rugby gets less attention than ever and apparently the way to fix this is for the new headline making coach to sit in meek silence

Make it make sense
What about winning the Bledisloe Cup? That would be the best advert. Eddie has made noise but he didn't even win a game yet

In all honesty if any other countries had to play NZ like we do over the last 20yrs and had their own ‘Bledisloe’, they would most likely have 0 ‘Bledisloe’ Cups with Ireland and RSA holding the cup once out of 20 attempts. NZ almost never lost back to back games in that period against the same opponent. Over these 20yrs we have tried the aggressive rhetoric route, we have tried the meek say very little tactic, we have tried the best friends tactic, the super rugby form doesn’t count tactic, etc. it all leads to the same result. So we might as well get excited and try draw as much attention as we can through the diminishing returns the wallaby schedule seems to provide each year.

Not sure if this has been discussed but lolesio's absence is interesting to me...its likely that jones got a good read on him after the england series last year and is passing on him.

Iv always been a lolesio supporter but honestly the fact that he's sharing duties with jack for brumbies isnt great for demonstrating he can carry a wallabies side for 80 mins... seem even larkam thinks he cant command a game for more than 60 mins. I realise thats probably more a tactical decision bit its still telling
Or maybe Larkham’s worked out that changing your 9 & 10 together is a winning formula. Working so far. We lost games when Iona was the only back up 10.

So a professional coach, who's won a Super rugby competition, won a world cup, and whose entire career hangs around success, picks a lesser side because of the club he played for forty years ago? And why did Rennie pass on Wilson, hair colour?

Yeah but he had no impact on Super Rugby performances
Maybe see how Eddie goes after a couple of Tests? He’s done a great job of getting rugby back in the spotlight. I guess if Rugby Australia had a PR section they have the sack now because Eddie is that section now. He’s picked his first squad, and told those who missed what he wants from them. Let’s just wait till he starts coaching. He’s talked of a winning culture. That is firstly a mindset, backed up by belief, hard work, improving on skills and good coaching. Eddie has come out swinging, but has to get the players on board and playing as a winning team. Lets see how he goes once he’s coaching his squad, to how he thinks we can win.

Exactly. Although I’m sure he’s told Wilson what he is looking for to get into the squad. I think it must be the Myrtle green head gear Eddie sent him to wear and Wilson’s refusal to don it that is the real reason Wilson has missed this first squad!

Signed through 2027. Eddie must not hate him too much.

Previously an Rugby Australia/Wallabies announcement of a re-signing more than likely indicated a Rugby Australia top-up but there's been quite a few of these announcements over the last year and so now I'm not so sure.

I'd obviously love him to be 1 or 2 on the pecking order but he may not be the type of player Jones wants to use.
Lonergan being a good goal kicker is a handy string to his bow too.

Agree. His style of 9 will be heavily dictated by the 10 in a perfect world but our depth of inform players is what is limited right now.

A top-up through to 2027 though is a positive sign. Either that or he sees absolutely no depth in the position across the country right now. Which tbh I don't see anyone that makes me think they might be something in a couple of years. Teddy Wilson, Khalani Thomas might come through, but we haven't seen enough to know. Khalani likely to look elsewhere if he has Tate signed in the same Club for 4 more years.

There has been a rumour for a while now that Kalani is already looking elsewhere, potentially an NZ side

Our pathways for young players lead to only 5 Super sides. Going overseas is sometimes the better option to get game time and learn your craft week in week out. Or for some, going to League gives them more options. Not sure how you fix it to be honest, but sitting on the bench and getting minimal game time does not improve a player.

Adelaide and Darwin in expansion.
If you don’t want to be that brave and bold, give Brisbane and Sydney their 2nd super rugby franchise
