3rd XV Trial 3 Results

High 1st XV 45 d St Stanislaus 3rd XV 10
It has been reported that High 1st XV have made it two wins in a row with victory over Stannies 3rds by a decent margin. They have now scored 70 points in the last two matches (compared to 0 points in the comp last year). What a great turnaround and looks promising for their first competition match which is an early comp game v TAS next week in Armidale. I can't wait for that one.

Kings 3rd XV 22 d v Shore 3rd XV 10
Kings are looking the goods with consecutive trial victories over Scots and Shore and clearly have no intention of letting the Col Windon Shield go anywhere else (they currently share it with Riverview). Their final trial match next week is against Newington at Stanmore and they should have no trouble with that match based on recent results.

Joeys 3rd XV 12 d Scots 3rd XV 7
It's always hard to win at Bellevue Hill so Joeys would be very happy with this trial result. They head to Shore next week for their final trial before the first comp round against Grammar. Scots are not out of this by any means. Close losses to Kings and Joeys put them right in the frame for a good season once the comp starts.

Riverview 3rd XV 31 d Newington 3rd XV 0
With a strong away win over Newington at Stanmore, Riverview 3rds are also shaping up well for defense of the title in 2023. They host Scots at Lane Cove in their final trial next Saturday and that should be a really good barometer for how they are travelling before the competition starts.

St Stanislaus 1st XV 15 d Grammar 1st XV 12
Grammar have now had three losses on the trot but have not played any trials against teams in the 3rd XV GPS competition, so it is really hard to know how they are going. My instinct says that they need to win before the competition starts. They are playing St Pats next week in their final trial so are likely to start the GPS competition as a bit of an unknown quatity when they face Joeys at Rushcutters Bay on 27 May.

SHS is in an arms race with SGS for the mantle of HSC glory.
SHS and SGS both had changes in leadership years ago that did away with the muscular academic.
Shame.

1. I was at this game. It was defense that won that game.

Lets see what the report says....

Scots kicked off in front of an estimated crowd of 10,000 in the match to decide the premiership. The Scots bigger forward pack immediately started to play the rolling maul to great effect. In the third minute Scots had St Joseph's under pressure with a high ball under the posts. They regathered to near the posts.The conversion gave Scots the lead 7- 0. From the kick off, St Joseph's kicked to Scots backs where Simpson was able to regather the ball. From the next ensuing ruck, St Joseph's were awarded a penalty which Hannon converted. 3-7.

Scots were starting to win the majority of the possession and were attacking inside the St Joseph's 22. From a maul their backs were able to find space to send their speedy winger over for a try in the corner. 3-12. All the pressure was on St Joseph's, who needed to win some possession to mount an attack. Another deep kick by Hannon to the Scots backs proved successful, with their winger failing to find touch. Thompson was able to mount a counter attack with Rogan and Shepherd to support. The ball was fed to Griffin who had little space but was able to out-sprint
the cover defence to score in the corner. 8-12.

Joeys forwards were starting to make some strong effective tackles on their counterparts. They resisted the Scots attack who were using their big forwards as battering rams charging at the line. On two occasions the Scots forwards were held up over the line and forced back. Scots maintained the pressure but solid tackling by Thompson and Shepherd held the line. A ruck infringement gave Scots a further three points. 8-15.

From the kickoff, St Joseph's were able to move into the Scots half. Hannon was able to kick a 45 metre penalty to close the gap to 11-15. On half time he kicked another penalty to end the half at 14-15.

In the second half Scots continued their lineout domination. However Rogan was able to put us back on attack with a fine counter attack deep inside his 22. From an ensuing ruck, St Joseph's were awarded a penalty. Harmon kicked the goal to put St Joseph's in the lead for the first time in the match. 17-15. A crucial tight head to Harvey put the team on the attack. The ball was sent out to the backs with Griffin tackled down the line. From the lineout, Radford went close to scoring but was forced back. An opportunity went begging when from a five metre scrum the backs spilt the ball in attack.

Scots were able to relieve the pressure and start mounting their own attack. Scots were winning the majority of possession from the lineouts and mauls. Time and time again they were mounting attacking raids inside St Joseph's 22. Only desperate defence by both forwards and backs kept Scots from scoring. With 15 minutes to go Rogan counter-attacked again deep inside his 22.

From the ensuing ruck Shepherd made a fine break through the Scots forwards to put some sting back into the St Joseph's attack. With ten minutes left, St Joseph's won a scrum on half way. The backs decided to play a decoy centre split with Shepherd going wide and changing the angle. He was able to break the Scots centre and with two players hanging on to him he passed the ball to Wheeldon on the fly. Wheeldon had to beat the full back and the cover coming across. This he was able to do, and scored out wide. This made the score 22-15 in our favour.

With seven minutes to go, Scots hammered the St Joseph's line. From a lineout near the 22, Scots second rower made a bursting run on the short side, only to be tackled by the smallest player on the field in Steven Devine. For the last few minutes of the game the premiership was on the line, with the much bigger Scots forwards charging for the line, only to be turned back by the smaller St Joseph's pack. In the end St Joseph's were able to withstand the Scots onslaught to win the match and the premiership 22-15.

Got to watch quality footy from the 5ths up until the 1sts. Something funny that caught my eye was a player that looked like paul gallen in the 5ths for the blue and gold boys. Played a bit like him on offence scoring a try but nowhere to be seen on defence , just thought that coincidence was funny.

I believe you have been fortunate enough to witness Edward John Harris Arundell (utility forward, possibly N.4,5,6,7,8) in peak performance, putting on a clinic for fellow supporters and Joeys down at death star. However, after an absolutely gobsmacking show, he, unfortunately, went down with a severe concussion. This has resulted in Edward facing 2 weeks on the bench, he will be greatly missed among his fellow teammates.

I try to follow the AAGPS fixtures but occasionally these vary. I still don't know how Stannies 3rds managed to play both High AND Grammar last week :)

Grammar are scheduled to play St Pats as well this Saturday so perhaps one team is playing against their 1sts and the other team against their 2nds?

Kings 4ths are probably a better match for Newington 3rds in any case given recent losses by Newington.

Grammar 1sts plays St Pats 2nds at Weigall 1 at 12 noon

Yep, the thirds will also take around 3 boys from the 4ths to be “injury subs” if something were to happen. These boys will make the 20 minute drive straifht after the game to go play newo 3rds.

INP will you be doing a review on newo 3rds vs kings 4ths this week ? If not I’ll be in attendance and could help with this.

I feel that ship has passed - Is it just Rugby they struggle to compete in? Assume they are ok in most other sports and have a sport of "focus"?
