Where’s the Joker???

Must be having a Power Nap after a long day of rugby and a full tummy from the rowers BBQ @ HH???

in all seriousness old mate, commiseration on today’s result. I can’t remember the last time Newington beat Joeys at home.
Hey there.

I normally take Saturday night off from here and enjoy a few beers at Jacks Bar and then dinner with mates.
Last night I caught up with a couple of Newington Old Boys who were my neighbours once. We had a great night.
It was a good game from both teams and Joeys didn't lose.....they just ran out time!
I was on the eastern sideline and enjoyed the lunacy of the wild wookies. A small but energetic bunch of supporters.

Three high scoring games.
All 6 teams were able to put close to and over 30 points on the board.
Have not seen a round like this in a very long time.
While Kings are out in front with three wins, there are still 7 games to go and anything can happen.
Joeys are yet to settle, View on the rise, Shore the spoiler and the Dragon of Stanmore could get on a roll.
Injuries will be telling. Joeys have had theirs early with at least 5 to come back which will make a difference.
With this season, depth is the key.

Across 1’s, 2’s and 16a’s joeys must have the better part of a full team out injured. Quite the contrast to last year where there were almost no missed games.

You were not alone there. I don't know why but you could feel it was coming. Joeys were camped on their line and a bit paniky no composure and it was the first time in the game that inside 22 defence was holding. It was as 12 point swing.

New were out on their feet at the end. The opportunity was there to put them away, but the pass went to the right with an unmarked person on the LHS. Would have been an awesome try if it came off.
I’d say Joeys didn’t adjust their tactics fast enough. The ref allowed a generous interpretation of the offside line (both ways). Joeys needed to create momentum in the middle before going wide. It was only after the yellow card / intercept that they started to realise this, perhaps the New pack tiring helped. Alas it was too late but only just.

1. Prior (Joeys)
2. Ghattas (Joeys)
3. Davenport (Kings)
4. Green (Joeys)
5. Fonua (Kings)
6. / 7 Massey (Joeys)
6./7 ? There is a decent option from Newington but I am unsure of the name.
8. Taumaupau Joeys)
9. Grover (View)
10. Fowler (Joeys)
11. Farah (Kings)
12. Gough (Joeys)
13. Hartman (View)
14. Kynan (Joeys)
15. Palmisani (Joeys)

Prior, Massey and Gough are all currently injured so they might run out of time to play for a spot. Ghattas and Green are the only 2 Joeys players currently playing in the 16’s team, the rest are injured or opens. Most of the others names are currently playing opens as well. The majority here all played Sydney U15’s and were amongst it for U15 Gen Blue trials. No doubt there are some other names worthy of consideration and some will say that the list is too heavily favoured to Joeys …. But the for and against in 15’s last year explains why it is that way. Apologies if I’ve spelt names incorrectly.
I think I would put in Tregonning from kings somewhere in the backs. He is probably one of the best or only player in U16 that can play well from Fly-half all the way through to fullback, he is not a bad option for the coaches to put in one of the two teams. had an exceptional game against view yesterday. Although he did get a yellow for a late shot on view's fly-half who was down for quite some time after the hit. probably not the best call from the referee to card him though.

Interesting. Is he new this year?

Thoughts on the game at north parra:
Bit of a tight 5 smash fest at the beginning. Kings number 4 first run off the back fence made me soil my pants. Kings forwards too powerful, view fitness couldn’t get them the win, timely injuries helped Kings pack to stay alive till the bell.

Did anyone get to watch the kings 2nds yesterday, if you haven’t it’s a must watch!

the number 10 Ben sewyar in my eyes should be a lock for presidents. He has just been class all season, there are lots of wraps on young jonty Fowler but right now I don’t see how you can pick anyone but sewyar. If you watch this you’ll understand the reasons for the hype.

he was picked over jonty aswell in gen blue 15s last year so I think he will get the nod as the starting 10.

3rd XV Round 1 Report

Scots 20 d Kings 0

A dominant display from Scots at Bellevue Hill inflicting an opening loss on the defending co-premiers. This was a big reversal of the two-point trial loss, perhaps partly due to Kings reported injury list, but you cannot take away from Scots in this confident three-try victory. I predicted a Scots win here, but did not expect it to be so convincing. They led 12-0 after two good first half tries and Kings never really recovered. Scots have called out that they are a real chance for the premiership this year and Kings will have to regroup quickly to avoid any further losses. Scots travel to Armidale next week and Kings face High at home.

Shore 24 d High 7
From all reports this was quite a close contest at Northbridge with the score not necessarily reflecting the closeness of the game. Shore's tough trial matches have obviously set them up for a strong win here over an emerging High team that have demonstrated that they will not be easily beaten this year. But Shore now have a rematch of their last trial against Joeys at Hunters Hill and that will be a tough comp game. High travel to Kings for round 2, looking for their first win in this competition against a Kings side needing to rebound from a big loss.

Riverview 52 d TAS 10
What a dominant display this was by defending co-premiers Riverview up in Armidale, notifying all teams of their intention to retain the shield. Sadly not on Cluch, but Riverview would be very pleased to make the long trip and come away with such a convincing victory. For TAS, they have already notched two competition points with the early victory over HIgh but will find Scots next week a significant challenge. Riverview move on to play Grammar in a top of the table clash at Lane Cove and that should be an absolute blockbuster.

Grammar 11 d Joeys 10
The Rushcutters Bay premiership graveyard continues for Joeys after losses to Grammar in 2018 (5-7), 2020 (14-17) and now a one point loss in 2023 (10-11). Joeys led for most of the match with an early try in the first half and went to the break up 7-3. The teams traded penalty goals in the second half with Joeys retaining a 10-6 lead until the 38th minute. Grammar showed excellent attacking speed down the right side with a brilliant winger's try in the corner and that was the match. Joeys seemed to be able to make breaks the whole game that they could not convert into points. The Grammar defence was very solid and their patience paid diviends in the end with a hard fought first round victory. Well done Grammar! They travel to Lane Cove next week for a crucial top of the table clash with Riverview, while Joeys need to rebound against Shore at Hunters Hill if they are to have any chance this season.

A great opening round indeed with more great rugby to come.

He’s very good, size only issue but would hold his own in 1’s
