FRIDAY.....GET THOSE TIPS IN PLEASE!

For the remainder of the season I will not be sending reminder messages as I did last term. My new work does not allow me the time to complete such tasks so if you forget you are given the away team. Mind you, this season anything is possible. It is just the margins you miss out on.

With four rounds to go the tipping competition is close, very close with early runaway leader @rugbyAU being now only a fraction ahead of a chasing pack headed by @marlins merchant, @dusk and @Aagpsglory. If you are out of it, be bold and try your luck. Who knows, draws can happen, Newington may win at the cow yard and with the Storm troopers playing the Swamp Monsters at the Death Star in a competition for the most pretentious display of wealth and privilege, who knows what handbags will come out on top? I can imagine the car park right now.

Good tips. In 2024 get on board early to be on the board.
I will be hiding in Heavens pastures this weekend away from the Stirlingbridge crew and their telescopic lens.
The Cluch will be on the Deathstar game

Looking forward to a competitive round of 16s rugby this week, Kings vs Newington looks like a tight mid table clash and I am interested to see the result coming out of that, although I will tip Kings to come away with a win especially with Makesani apparently training with the opens teams. View vs Scots should be dominated by Riverview in my opinion, Scots is a good side in this age group with a few stars but with the absence of Large I see View being too much for the boys out East. Shore vs Joeys should be a good game, it was a tight 2 point win for the Blue and White last time out but with a crowd at Joeys looking big it will be a big challenge to repeat this feat for Shore, however I still trust the Shore boys to bring the win home.

one of the best talents seen in a while going up through the system. Can definitely seen him going places.

What is the most anticipated game for the weekend in the U16 age group? SHORE v JOEYS main ground at 1pm? Should be a huge turnout for the JOEYS men out at hunters hill. SCOTS v VIEW at Bellevue hill should also be a massive game, although SCOTS team has a very strong spine, I feel as though the VIEW inside backs and forward pack will ultimately be too strong. The clash between NEWO and KINGS seems to be the tightest game of them all, with KINGS hopefully getting a few players back from their previous side (still missing Farah, whilst Sawyer and Fauna are occupied in the Opens teams), however NEWO seems to have a few NSW schools players coming back into the side, currently I see Newo's outside backs using pure pace to get around the KINGS side. For the SHORE team, the introduction of their Captain Rolly Smith coming back from injury and concussion to make his star return. That's all from me, can't wait to see the results.

Joeys enter the round 7 home clash against Shore with a full strength team for the first time this season. Oscar Jorgensen returns from the serious ankle injury he suffered back in round 1, with the talented utility back expected to provide much needed ballast and go-forward. He is paired in the centres with the excellent Patrick Broe to give Joeys a powerful centre combination that supporters will be excited to see in action.

In other positive news, Eamon Doyle plays his first match this season following a four month recovery from surgery to repair a knee injury that has disrupted his past two 1st XV seasons. Coming back in the No. 6 jersey, the coaching staff highly rate the all-round game of 196cm backrower whose return is a real bonus in what has been a frustrating season so far at Hunters Hill.

Shore, coming off a narrow loss to Kings in their last GPS outing, will rely on a dogged and disciplined forward outfit led by second row Mcreery and flanker LeMaitre, whose battle with Pat Young will be a beauty. Shore halfback Orpin will look for opportunistic snipes around the fringes, and the outside backs have touch of class out wide via GenBlue fullback Tom Klem.

Joeys will clearly be coming through the front door with their strongest forward eight available and a centre combination built to bend the line. This should give their talismanic leader Hwi Sharples more front foot ball than he has had to work with so far this season to weave his magic. Shore will definitely stand their ground and find a way to stay in the fight, meaning another entertaining clash awaits

Orpin the undisputed form 9 this season. His rep games showed he was very clearly unlucky not to be in the Waratah #1's. When you see trial form like that not recognized as it should be clearly shows selectors go in with pre-determined selections.

Interested to see how teams adjust now nobody is a surprise performer. If you're the Joeys backrow you have instruction to let him get 2 steps in before you whack him.

Happens every year. The established players from a previous years rep teams who are back are so heavily scrutinised we say they disappoint or seem lesser to the player who has outperformed pre season expectation.

Incumbency vs Current Form

Age old selection problem. How much weight do you put on Incumbency as opposed to a player who is in better current form ( even slightly ) than the other ?
As long as the process of selection is non-biased and non-political, then you must trust the selectors. The player that misses out should be informed on what to improve on and encouraged to continue playing. If the player is motivated enough, eventually they'll get picked ( many examples but famous one is Nick Farr-Jones we all know the story ).
If you ask me, incumbency should mean nothing. It's a new season, new players and form goes up and down. You pick the best player at that time ( as long as the process of selection is correct and transparent )

Scots GPS teams, Aidan Gow is out, another huge blow for Scots. Conor Press is also out which isn't good for them either. Blake Steep will replace the injured Mateus Heslin in the flankers instead of the backs. (Pretty sure he would of played backs if Heslin wasn't out.) And Hunter Ryan dropped for the young Geoff Hughes.

Did you see Hwi in the game v Qld? Wouldn’t say he let the selectors with egg on their face. Controlled the game from start to finish

Thinking ahead to '24 already. Think Kings and View as top teams this year are very year 12 heavy, interested to see where the year 11's are moreso than the 16's - some of whom go straight to firsts but not that many generally. Scots and New have a fair few year 11's in 1's already, albeit a lot of backs - they need to get the pill still. I know Joey's class of '24 age group started off slowly but have built some nice depth recently and will have a platform from this year. Shore still a little inconsistent, especially on depth, but still have some outstanding individual talent. Scots on paper look the team to beat but they've got to a) get on the paddock, and b) get some form of parity in the forwards (their potential Achilles heel). If they do their backs will wrack up cricket scores. I also like the New potential in the backs but may not have the depth in the forwards. View next year is an unknown for me, weren't great at the age group level but Opens squad has gone well this year.

Back to '23 - interested to see who runs out for Kings this weekend. May be a few key injuries which could play to New's strengths. An upset would make for a fascinating last three rounds.
