Declan was a real talent in his younger years at Waverley, he was the best player on the field for years.

He was an absolute standout and the Waverley team has struggled to adapt since he left, a great pick up for Joeys. He will go far.

If I’m not mistaken, he played in the Bs until his final year at Waverley in 2022, when he made it on the wing for the 16As. The Waverley First XV went on to win the Henry Plume Shield in 2023 and finished second in 2024. Minto wasn’t exactly missed—despite his impressive speed, he likely would’ve struggled to break into the First XV during those seasons. The outside backs included a few league-style players who brought more physicality and stronger game management from the back. However, after transferring to Joeys, he went on to deliver a few standout performances for the 2nd XV, despite being hampered by injuries throughout the 2023–2024 seasons. Not sure how many games he got in the 1st XV those years but definitely has potential.

How did Isaac Fonua go from Kings? And any further thoughts on Heamasi today? - Could maybe see him at 13 but Jarryd King too good to be moved out of that shirt I reckon.

Finally, how did Isaiah Sheck go? Looked an animal for NSW over the two games a few weeks ago. Scary that he's got another year at this level.

Fonua didn’t play neither did Ollie smith, Ben saywer and Duke milward.

I think you need to move Hemasi to 13 and play King at 15 or on a wing, Sheck was solid however he just dosent have the Gas tank in him yet. Personally I rank Hasani above him he is able to play a full 80 at top level.

In the past this has been a lot of fun and each year we see winners come from many backgrounds.
Last year it was a schoolboy who won (won't reveal the school)

Tight game I hear, Shore only winning by a try. Game called of early due to someone from High breaking there leg.

yep - High actually led for the whole game. When the main squad were on, High look pretty bloody sharp in the backs with some hard straight running fed by a pretty good half back. their game lost shape a bit when they apparently ran on a lot of their 2nds. ( as that game was washed out).
Shore are a brand new team as the higher grades released all their reserves pushing 11 boys from the 3rds into the 4ths so they need some time to gel.

The equivalent High firsts, shore 4ths game last year was a blow out so High look to be a lot more competitive this year. injuries permitting.

Totally agree Crashy. That Shore 4ths are probably around as good/better than theyre counterparts last year, so promising signs from the Highschoolers.

I think there has been some confusion regarding the Minto brothers

The Joeys #15 from the game against Waverley is Julian Minto (yr10)

His older brother Declan finished at Joeys in 2024 and missed his final year of schoolboy rugby due to injury, however I believe he was apart of the Australia U18 7s side who became victorious at a global tournament in New Zealand late last year. Word has it he has gone on to sign a huge deal in France. "would’ve struggled to break into the First XV during those seasons" is hard to believe in that matter.

Sheck went off with a shoulder injury after being hit in a strong tackle by the Kings loose head. Not sure how significant the injury is however while I was sitting with other NC parents I heard them say that he felt it was bad and like what he had before (I think this is his 3rd shoulder injury). Fingers crossed it isn't that bad and he has a speedy recovery

Agree - I would like to see Makasini at 13 and King at 15. Sheck as always a #beast.

Going off the scores from v View I think Newington should handle business fairly comfortably. Doesn't seem Cranbrook have the depth bring guys up from 2nds either. No points scored in 1sts or 2nds...

Well, well, well, we are back and are in full throttle. Great games from View, Joeys, Newington, and Knox to see a thrilling day of rugby for the schoolboys. There were a few hiccups on the Joeys number one in the morning due to poor discipline, as well as at Knox, but that is to be expected at the beginning of a fierce season. Nevertheless, the sheer passion on every number one field was outstanding. Got around to the View and Joey's games, and wow were they great. The wonderkid Finn Leary does it again, with Xavier Ryan complimenting his ball-running ability. The effort I saw from both WC and J was outstanding; great to see as an old boy. 6, 7, 9, 15 caught my eye on the weekend as they put in the extras.

Caught the view game, and oh my word. They kept the Cranbrook boys to nil. It was a cracking attack with the key players from last years first team stepping up to dominate the Cranbrook side. Expectations this week are for Newington to win with Cranbrook coming off a tough loss. I'm going to catch the Joeys Knox game this week and the Shore game the following week, but I will make it to Scots and Riverview before the season ends.

Must say game of the day was the Joeys 2nd and 3rd XV (couldn't decide) with Patrick Thompson leading it out for Trinity with Brock Prideoux, and Aston Lebler (c) with Finn Hannon leading out the 2nd XV, it was a tight game. As well as Julian Ryan and Harry Beckett leading the 3rd XV out to have a big win against WC, well played boys.

Very fair to say that if Declan wasn’t badly injured playing in the 1’s in Year 11 he would have been a lock for the 1’s in year 12 and would have made a number of rep teams beyond the all conquering Aussie U18 7’s team in 2024.
