Wallabies v Fiji, Sunday, 6 July, 1:30pm @ McDonald Jones Stadium, Newcastle

I dont feel hard done by if there's a borderline forward pass in the lead up to a try against my team. They occur regularly through out the game. It doesn't change the fact that my team didn't stop them from getting over the line. If you can't say a pass is categorically forward on first glance, it should not be called back imo. The reason the NRL bunker doesn't rule on forward passes is due to the difficulty of accurately determining the direction of the ball. If we're looking at slow-mo replays from different angles something has gone wrong.

We cannot beat the Lions with a D that stands back. It almost cost us the game v Fiji, as they are a dangerous team if allowed to run.
The Tahs held the Lions mainly due to their rush D. If we persist with this defensive pattern, we are going down 3-0.

I also thought a couple players looked quite tentative on attack (Sua'ali'i & Wright) sometimes they just need to rip in and get over the advantage line

Really, really, really hoping because they were keeping their powder dry, avoid injuries and avoid revealing hand. Probably being very naive and optimistic.

“We didn’t play well enough for people to have the expectation that we’re going to come bowling into Brisbane and knock the Lions over. I’m not sure that expectation was there before Fiji,” head coach Schmidt said.

“There’s not real confidence, but there’s a quiet resolve. And that quiet resolve, hopefully over the three-match series, can build to something that will earn us the support of a very interested group.

“We haven’t been together for six months. To have five trainings and to be seamless would be an expectation that I hoped for rather than immediately believed would happen. Now we have another short runway to improve on where we were against Fiji.”

In my view the Jorgensen try should have stood. Wright's pass wasn't called forward live and the main angle wasn't conclusive because his hands were obstructed by his body so you couldn't see the ball release.

The reverse angle that took them forever to find and show wasn't in line with the play so it didn't really give you much indication on the direction of the hands/ball at release point relative to being forwards or backwards.

It probably was forward but a floating pass released flat is going to go a long way forward when the ball carrier is running at pace.

I'm not convinced a better decision was made to overturn that try rather than just sticking with the on field decision. It certainly took every bit of five minutes though which is way too long.

Both passes (particularly the 2nd one) looked forward live. To me it feels like they let things play knowing they have the ability to get the TMO to check.

The Fiji try being disallowed has left a really bad taste in my mouth.

One way to potentially limit the impact of the TMO is to remove their ability to change the outcome of a game once the play has gone more than 2 actions (i.e. a kick, pass or ruck), unless there is foul play involved warranting a card.

I can’t work out why we’re trying give the oppo more time and space in attack. Fisher’s D system makes it so difficult for us to re-align. It reeks of us just waiting for them to make a mistake.

Yeah its infecting the game with the same issues VAR brings i.e. the moment of apotheosis is poisoned because you can't celebrate it.

Its also really dumb that the highest possible standard is applied to the moments before a try but not to the rest of the game.

This is my issue with it. Rugby is an inherently messy game. How many times a match would a player kick the ball into a teammate in an offside position in front of them in the ruck, or accidentally make head contact with another player in the ruck. If you take a microscope to every stanza of play, you'll almost always find something to criticize.

I was pretty convinced it was forward and wasn't disappointed that the try was disallowed. What did disappoint me was how long it took to arrive at the decision. Just get on with it!

The delay was the major part of the problem.

I still think there's an issue with the decision making though. It was probably forward but if you haven't called it live then I certainly don't think we were shown anything that conclusively overturned the decision that had been made on the field.

TMO should be used to avoid making bad errors. It shouldn't be to overturn a decision based on vibes.

I dunno. If Fiji scored off a pass like that I would be fuming. If anything I think it just showed how terribly bad the touch judges were yesterday. Missed that fwd pass and missed potters foot on the line.

I still don't think it is clearly forward. We really don't know though because the view that showed the pass clearly wasn't from in line with the play so it didn't help.

That type of pass is always going to look dodgy even if it is backwards because it will be caught a long in front of where it is passed.

World Rugby need to learn to accept that fans like you will get angry at calls they perceive as going against their team and be okay with that. Worked fine for the 100 years that preceded TMO.
