School sporting scholarships/recruitment

Spend the money educating the 10 most influential rather then the 1,500 of which 90% wouldn't get not only teachers aides (thus learning would be far more limited), but really wouldn't aim to make a difference in society and make the most of the opportunity

PS - lincoln, curious that you use well known Shore old boy Errol Flynn for your ID pic, yet you insist no shore affiliation.

Actually affiliation is relatively strong with emphasis on the word relative - the big fella was a contemporary of one. As an aside, I think Shore's performances across the A/B teams last Saturday at home somewhat supports the notion of an "indolent rich" (aka spoilt Mosman brats) problem that will in some fashion eventually totally infest all GPS schools - the red card in the 1sts could also be linked to this issue.

Speaking of red cards in the Shore v Joeys game, the Joeys boy who was sent off was apparently told by the ref that the tackle "was the worst he'd ever seen in schoolboy rugby" anybody at the game may be able to back me up when i say it was perhaps a little overkill?

A question - it was suggested to me that Sydney University and no doubt many other clubs, through various foundations, old boy funds and the like foot the school fees for selected Junior talent, in return for the promise (or hope) of future allegiance. Has anyone else heard of this sort of scholarship?

Suppose it is also not beyond the realms of possibility for a few wealthy fathers to pool together a few thousand each to underwrite the education of some rugby prodigy into the school of their choice.

Both mechanisms would be beyond the schools to police in regards to GPS / CAS non sporting scholarship edicts.

Thats how it works in Qld. The affiliated old boys donate the money to "enhance" a certain sport (mostly Rugby, Rowing, Football, Track & Field, Swimming). The director of the sport then goes off for a little walk around rep carnivals. Somehow the standouts from the carnival turn up at the school, uniform and all the next year. Its a lot easier in the younger grades, often schools won't risk it so they wait till about 15 and the player has developed as much as you would expect from schoolboy level. The kids aren't chosen to play 14A, 15A, its a quick fix straight up 1st XV kinda thing

School sport for students not professionals

Very convenient... and just a coincidence that they play rugby. ;-) How do you explain all of the other good sportsmen that New seem to have attracted? Particularly in basketball... No Tongan Church thing to hide behind there - just plain out in the open scholarships. Face it Blindside - Newingtons level of importing atm is taking the #iss!

Same with Trinity in the CAS. They have a significant anniversary approaching and are importing athletes across the board so they will win in all sports. Some other CAS schools think its a bit much, shrug their shoulders and think that the true competition is amongst the remaining schools. Buying a premiership simply devalues the whole competition and is a false victory! Lets face it, a few of the other schools could outspend Trinity if they wanted to but choose not to enter into an athletic arms race. Stop the professionalism of school sports - get a job out of school part-time or lets wait until after school when it is appropriate to get a full-time job.

I wonder what the tax office would make of these arrangements - receiving a benefit for personal exertion - but then the same could be said for the music scholars - or are they indeed the same.

Interesting comment re Trinity - if anything I thought they had significantly pulled back on the swimming band.

Am waiting to see what Cranbrook does for their 100 (2018) - maybe put the hard word on Jamie to buy every sports boy so that they can't compete for the other schools ala Manly 30 years ago. Then New and Trinity will see real money at work! :)

So with the state junior championships entering day 2, what sightings fo school "selectors" being spotted circling the talent - I'm told they have been seen as far away as Menai U13s. No spies to speak to at 12s (Camden) or 14s (Orange) - 15s (T G Milner) more than a few spotted, and supposedly at 16s / 17s a boit quiet - probably too old or no expecatation of any new raw talent.

i agree dermo. the tackle was not that bad. it was a card offense but he is overeacting if that is the case

Yes i've heard that as well, but only so they could kick some $$ into their centenary scholarship fund for other sports. All (CAS/GPS) schools have celebrated "significant" milestones in the time honoured - go all out to win every title - fashion. Recall it happenning at Scots when as if by magic about half of the NSW U15s or 16s started there en masse in time to be some milestone XV.

When Riverview celebrated their centenary in 1980, they didn't need any outsiders/scholarship holders to win a range of premierships/titles in most sports...rugby, cricket, athletics and in part, rowing...it was just that year the blokes played for each other and for school.

Spirit often goes further than the dollars do. Just ask the Kings teams of 2008 and 2010 (particularly 2010 as they failed miserably). When the going gets tough in a match would you rather have a kid on the field who has been there since Yr 7 and lives and breathes the place, or some bought in supposed star who suddenly pulls a heart string when things start going against him?

I know who i'd choose... and its within the rules!

Interesting point about Cranbrook. Their Headmaster finishes at the end of this year. He has always been strongly/totally against any imports so it will be interesting to see whether the new bloke has a different view. As others have mentioned... If the Cranbrook old boys start getting out their cheque books everyone else should start to worry!

I recall 3 out of the 4 x 100 metres Open athletics team repeating from Joeys the year before.

Regardless of spirit, I don't think any school can win a big sporting premiership without scholarship players.. by those big sports I mean Rugby, Athletics, Swimming, Cross Country, Rowing, Soccer.. even now Tennis, Basketball, Cricket and the like are dominated by scholarship players playing two sports.

I may be referring to the Queensland GPS system as I am unaware of how the New South Welshman do it, but it has been clearly illustrated this year (by Gregory Terrace) that without sporting scholarships, sooner or later the school will fall behind. Sure, a school can last on pride alone for a certain period of time but once the other schools have the initial base scholarships and winning culture in place, the non-scholarship school will fall behind and know that they can't compete.

Just for the record, I'm not against scholarships for the elite schools as the schools clearly have something more to offer than public eduction. I just think morally if schools decide to not follow suit they will sooner or later fall behind. The opportunity scholarships present are lifelong and if I were half decent enough to receive one I would certainly take it with both hands, regardless how devoted to the school I am.

Every 10 or so years terrace buck the trend and win a big premiership without imports, so it not unheard of. But you are largely correct in what you are saying, its very hard and does not happen often.

Went with a Grammar dad to Kings today to watch his son play in the main game. Below is a report on the 16As game I'm just duplicating from the NSW GPS thread (Kings 93 Grammar 0):

Their halves Davis (9) and Tulloch (10) just did tore holes in Grammar's defence and laid on a heap of tries for their outside backs particularly Carter (13). I'd be very surprised if they're not the GPS U16 nos 9 and 10 and given the amount of football they've played together for Country and Illawarra will also be the likely NSW Schools U16 halves.

Quick Question CTPE: How are the country (illawarra) 9 & 10 playing for Kings, if remember serves me correct isn't Kings the poor school in need of multi-millions of $ in Fed Government support based (for a new rifle range or two) at North Parramatta. Seems a long way from the 'gong.

Can't answer that one magpie4ever...where they come from and who they play for is of little interest to me. Like many, I just enjoy watching great young rugby talent playing rugby the way it should be played. Perhaps your question is better posed on the Scholarships thread.

The No. 9 for Kings is their on a scholarship.

Beaver I assume you meant "there". As I understand it he was at a selective high school before going to Kings so no doubt he excels in the academic field as well as on the rugby field.

Half-time at the rugby:

I was trying to be humourous (or is that humourless); but in all seriousness, surely one side (obviously with imports) beating another team by 90plus points is not good for any comp or the game, in generally.

I have read on this thread so much bagging of the ARU and their NTS squads (obviously an attempt to give the game a wider spread so one day we can be continous competitive with the sheep herders where the game is a religion and not one limited to the prestige schools with a sprinkling of other players); with limited (I am not saying none) bagging of the GPS importing kids to destroy other sides for what.

That is the question???? For what, I just don't get it. It is a bloody sport being played by (in this case) 16 year old kids. Is not for oil wells or diamond mines, although maybe there are a few of those owned by mum & dad at these schools.

That might be the answer:: sideline bets, your diamond mine against my oil wells.:lmao:
