And another interesting point re coverage. According to my kiwi nanny (who is teaching my son bad habits), the Wallabies gave the ABs a guard of honour off the ground. Nice touch of respect and smacks of good character. But not picked up on any coverage I have seen.

I saw this on the Fox Sports feed.

I was at a friend's place who didn't have Fox.

Pretty much as soon as the game finished, they cut to Underbelly Razor.

You also barely saw a scrum as Channel 9 used scrums as an opportunity to go to an ad break.

The two teams did it after the Saturday night game as well - it's always been a tradition in rugby, I didn't realise it had fallen by the wayside.

Always used to do it when I played. But not sure that school boy rugby is a great guide. Don't recall seeing much of it at the Tahs over the past few seasons.

Yeah this was happening every game a year or two ago I thought, seemed to have stopped a bit this year. But maybe that's just me watching it on Nine. I actually got the feeling there was a fair bit of bad blood between the sides, even just watching the match. Pocock was extra niggley for example. So I'm surprised it happened in this game, but maybe it never stopped.

WALLABIES RUGBY WORLD CUP SEMI-FINAL SETS RATINGS RECORDS

The Wallabies’ Rugby World Cup semi-final against the All Blacks in Auckland last
night attracted a massive nationwide television audience of 3.234 million people –
smashing the all-time Pay TV viewership record for Fox Sports and topping the
free-to-air ratings on Channel Nine.

No Rugby match since the World Cup final in 2003 has delivered an audience of the
same magnitude.

The tournament decider in Sydney eight years ago was watched by more than 4 million
Australians.

The highest rating match since 2003 was a Test against England in 2006 which drew
almost 1.9 million viewers.

In a direct comparison with 2003, there were 800,000 more people watching the Eden
Park clash last night than watched the World Cup semi-final between the Wallabies
and All Blacks in Sydney eight years ago.

Channel Nine’s free-to-air broadcast attracted 1.788 million people across the five
capital cities with the match being the most watched program in Sydney (710,000),
Brisbane (409,000) and Melbourne (376,000) and the second most watched in Adelaide
(141,000).

Channel Nine’s coverage of the game dominated Sunday’s line-up with the Rugby World
Cup semi-final ranking number one for the evening across key age demographics in
Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne, including the 16-39 year-olds.

Regionally the trans-Tasman clash also attracted strong numbers with 727,000 tuning
to watch the host nation progress to next Sunday’s final against France.

The semi-final was also the most watched program in Australian subscription
television history.

Fox Sports’ coverage of the Wallabies v All Blacks Rugby World Cup semi-final
attracted a record 719,000 viewers. The previous record was 531,000 for this year’s
Super Rugby final between the Reds and Crusaders in Brisbane.

The audience last night surpassed that number by almost 40%.

Rugby has enjoyed strong television ratings in 2011 with the game now holding down
the top four most watched programs in subscription television history – and all four
programs are live broadcasts of matches played this year.

Last night’s semi-final, the 2011 Super Rugby final, the Wallabies Rugby World Cup
quarter-final against the Springboks last week and this year’s Bledisloe Cup and Tri
Nations showdown with the All Blacks in Brisbane now hold positions No.1 to No.4 on
the all-time subscription television ratings.

I know Melbourne is a bigger city, but these figures are surprisingly close together.

Brisbane (409,000) and Melbourne (376,000)

just another pointer to the fact that Melbourne is the sporting capital of Australia or what?

Hope Nine feels a bit stupid for shortchanging the tournament so much given those viewing stats. We aren't a soccer nation but we watch the World Cup in droves, why wouldn't we watch the RWC on our time zone when we actually went in as second favourites?

its great to hear that ratings have made history!!

what do you guys think will come as a result of these ratings?? does it improve the likelihood of future rugby coverage (i.e. potential shute shield/super 15) on free to air?

it didn't in 2003.

you have to wonder how much the Melbourne Rebels inclusion boosted these figures..

Yes but Noddy, Australian Rugby is in a significantly better position to capitalise on this recent injection of interest then it was in 2003..

A few factors:
-2 extra Super Rugby teams covering a market of 6million
-33% longer Super Rugby Season
-Expansion of Tri-Nations for first time in 16years
-British Lions test in 2013
-Sevens Rugby ;)

Now im not saying that Rugby is going to ride a wave of incredible ratings into the sunset, but 2011 has been the best year for Australian Rugby since 2003, and naturally so, you didn't have to be Nostradamus to predict that.

But, all i can say is prepare yourself for 2012, there's going to be a few more ratings record before the end of next season. Opening game between Reds and NSW will smash all regular season records to pieces.

feel free to quote me on that in 6months time

The ARU did, however, knowingly sell Nine the rights to the domestic season. Hopefully they have learnt, and in future will lobby the IRB HARD to not let Nine near the coverage again. It's in the IRB's interest as much as anyone else's to have Rugby promoted well here.

Channel Nine have the 2015 World Cup already.
I think this thread and the IRB is getting to big for it's boots thread should be linked :?
Hey not that ARU does any better, they've sold all the other FTA rites to channel Nine and there's no Super Rugby games shown - only a rap up buried at 2300 Monday nights.
