When watching New (versus View) last year, a mate of mine pointed out a mammoth of a bloke playing 6 (I think- he was definitely in the backrow), who was apparently in year 11. Anyone know who this guy is? Must be one of the biggest backrow's in GPS this year...

Defiantly Oscar Pryos-Lee, id think he would be the biggest player, not just backrower. Didn't play much last year im pretty sure, will be good to see him back this year.

That bloke was a monster. He would not look out of place in a Tah's jersey, purely on the size of the bloke of course.... Is he any good? I remember Dempsey from View still had it over him, even though he looked a good 20kgs lighter

Havent seen him play in a while, may struggle to make GPS with the likes of Dempsey, Whitely, Murphy, Goldie, McCallum and Kamp around. Wouldnt count him out but.

Newbie,
in your opinion, what does these two teams in particular have that sets them apart from the rest?

I know rugby is a 15 man game however certain players give a team that extra spark that sets them apart from their competition. For want of a better term I shall call such lads 'Marquee' players!

Marquee players are game breakers in their own right, however they lift those around them who strive to be as good!

For mine both of the teams I have named contain such players. Contrastingly so do the others teams, however Kings and New have more IMO!

I won't elaborate on who such lads are, everyone in this site who read my posts know the lads to whom I refer for I often bang their drums of support!

Ultimately only time will tell whether I am right or wrong, because I might have to eat my words as it might be the case in 2012 that a 'Champion Team' may triumph over my ''Team of Champions"! So long as rugby wins!

Riverview will run away with trial. Heard St Pats have approx 5-6 out including 10 Markus and possibly 12 JP. Couple of players like 7,13 (Josh & Peter) will certainly compete, but a few others will be out of depth.

View one 72-5. they smashed pats in all other trials, with that try been the only try scored against 6,5,3,2,1st teams.

Joeys 17-12 Scots. Pretty scrappy game to be honest, not that great too watch. Joeys forwards had it all over Scots with 8 Goldie and 7 Murphy everywhere. Scots backs again were the strong point with 15 Kellaway having a blinder. 12 Stewart went off mid way through the game with an ankle problem, hopefully its not too bad.

Also heard Riverview beat Pats 72-5, Bill Freeman scoring 3.

New beat Kings by 19-7 in a good contest. Both teams were a bit rusty which is to be expected this early in the season. New dominated possession and territory and poor execution cost them another 3 or 4 tries. Both teams showed good structure and Kings tried hard but New just had too much firepower across the park. looking forward to New v Scots next week at Stanmore.

Pryor-Lees has moved to front row for New. Following his second season in the New 1st Eight he's bigger, stronger, fitter and meaner than ever.

Both teams are chock full of rep and ARU squad players - some scintilating backs with Kings probably having the edge with Tulloch, Foketi, Jones et al. Game will be won in the forwards though with New probably having the the bigger pack but Kings having the more mobile one. Will most likely end up a pretty tight contest unless one of them gets away to a very quick and decisive start.

You have hit the nail on the head. The game was won by Newington in their forwards today! I must admit I left with 5 minutes to go but by that time New were up 3 tries to 1.

Leaving defence aside, the game in general was not a great spectacle by any sense of the word as there was way too much dropped ball (especially from teams of this calibre). It was if the ball had been injected with oil that kept seeping through to the outer surface! As RugbyGirl suggests perhaps both teams were rusty!

The match ups as far as the back lines were concerned were somewhat of an anti-climax. However i will defer to great defence from both sides to offset my disappointment here! I expected the Kings boys to dominate but the the Newington backs defended well, especially Moeroa.

In terms of territory and possession Newington had it all over Kings, and I think I can count on one hand the times Kings got out of its own half. But for the excellent defence of Kings' Tulloch, Davies and Davis Newington would have had a field day!

Morris and Cannell for Newington were outstanding and were the difference on the day they were sublime! Conversely my hat also goes of to McCalman and Moylan from Kings (especially McCalman, he was tenacious as he was tireless)! There isnt much to this lad McCalman in terms of physical presence, but this is more than compensated by his willingness to put his body on the line!

Moeroa and Milne both bagged a try each, however for the amount of possession Newington had i expected more. Nevertheless as stated above the Kings inside defence was awesome! In saying that Newington were not serviced very well by their fly half. This lad was very unpredictable and the Newington back line was worse off for it! They were too shallow!

IMO the wingers and fullback for Newington put in subpar performances. One such instance resulted in McCalman charging down a kick and scoring a freakish try! I know, and have seen, all three play better so i will put their performance down to the fact that the game was a trial. Harry Jones from Kings didn't get much of a look in as far as ball was concerned, but when he did he showed flashes of his usual brilliance.

On a final note can someone tell me who the Newington #20 was who came on as a reserve in the second half? Im sure he was the same lad who played in the Newington 2nd's at #6. He is of Asian appearance. He had a great game in the 2nd's and so too in the 1st's. He absolutely crunched Foketi in a try saving tackle in the second half! Never seen him before!

And for the love of me, can someone please explain why Kings were going for penalty shots at goal during a trial game.

New had Lussick and Hood out whilst Ahosivi played in the 2nds. I think New are using the trials to compare players. There is serious competition for a number of positions.

Couldnt believe the size (or lack thereof) of the New 10. It looks like he has been pulled from the 14b's. He never threatened the line. Luckily both 12 and 13 for New held their own.
