Newbie it all depends on the extent of the ARU's influence in GPS selections. From what I''m hearing Milne is playing as well as Tepai and given their form and the fact that there is only one more game before GPS selections they should both be at the forefront of selectors minds.
I thought dempsey played very solid CTPE, i was keen to watch him as i have heard so much about him. He started off pretty shaky though, il give you that but from what i was told on the sidelines it was his first game back from injury. In the second half though he carried the ball exceptionally well, getting over the gain line with good leg drive and aggression, he set up both the View tries (which were scored by rorke....) with line breaks and refusal to go to ground.
I agree the view pack looked unfit and uninterested though, and in terms of selections, not many put their hand up. only rep honours for View should be rorke, dempsey, whitley in 1sts and redden at 13/wing for 2nds.

New handled the wet conditions better and were good value for the win, but it was a pity for the Joeys faithful that once their scrummie went over the try-line in a dive near the posts - and dropped the ball.
Regardless, New deserved the win and after seeing View and Scots from earlier trials I conclude that they are the best of the 4 GPS teams I have seen this year.
Their forwards are physical but they need to improve their scrums to go all the way. Their backs were also more robust: tough boys who got off their line fast and were well drilled. Some of their moves had clever deception in them.
Some of their individual backs looked promising. 12. Milne has been a fine acquisition for New as last I saw he was playing for a CHS side out of Randwick High School. I understand that he is a league player and you can see his enjoyment of contact.
He had a top game and is going to cause a bit of grief to GPS teams this year. Unfortunately his league background may have been responsible for the shoulder charge which earned him a yellow card.
Milne's partner at 13 was another abrasive centre and I liked the organisation of 9 Lussick in the wet conditions.
In the forwards big bopper 3.OPL had a good game and showed that he is light on his feet for a big unit. It's hard to judge his scrummaging but I note that Joeys had no particular problem on their LH side with 1. Robertson posted there, unless they missed the hit.
With these two GPS should have a decent scrum in the NSW trials, and if there are even better props in front of them, look out CAS etc. 2 Vea also looked like rep material.
Joeys had several good phases of play and scrambled well, but they were their own worst enemies sometimes and for the 3rd week in a row were vulnerable to breakouts. Towards the end of the game, and in the lead, they had a lineout near the New line, spilt the ball to New, who passed it along the backline, ran up the LH side of the field to score the winning try. Credit to Newington because it was a wonderful rugby moment, but like their 1st try - it was from a Joeys turnover.
I won't write too much about the Joeys lads as they would be mostly the same comments as in the last couple of weeks, though I note that replacement scrummie Makasini had a better game by sniping more and threatening to at other times, which fixed defenders.
Twos - Joeys 15 New 12 - Joeys scored 3 tries to 2 but there wasn't a lot in it. 9 Curtin of Joeys looked good in his comeback game and passed the wet ball well. For New, I liked the look of the fullback, a rangy hard lad, who looks like a good footie player.

I agree - same story in the 2nds! The 2 penalties that New received in the 2nds must have been major calls - the 20+ that Joeys were awarded obviously were not!

an interesting game between newington and joeys, however newington forwards not as dominate as most would think, joeys to outplay them upon the return of watts, sandell and murphy. Jack watts could very well be the most underated player in gps football this year!

OPL has only been playing front row for about 8 weeks. When he was in Year 10 he played blindside flanker in New's 2010 Championship team. He missed most of 2011 with injury. He could still play blindside - he's fit and mobile enough - but New think he is best for them in the front row due to his size (very big) and strength (considerable). It's still early days - I'm sure the scrummaging finesse will come with time.

Thanks RG - I seem to remember OPL elsewhere for New in the past playing 6 and another time at 8 when Luani didn't play, but sometimes I have senior moments and other times I think I may be having a senior moment and I actually am not.
If he is to be switched back to the back row I would play him at 8 but I wonder what the right path for him is? Changing to prop won't matter a lot with the schoolboys laws even for GPS but they could turn their noses at him at state level as some of the scrums in the Oz Championships are full on even though they are depowered. And will using him at prop put him on the wrong track as a senior player?

Some observations on results:
- Biggest winning margin is only 10
- Average winning margin is approx 5
- No team is unbeaten
- Riverview is the only team yet to win but have only had two GPS trials
- Joeys "take no prisoners" forwards have been their mainstay to date but their backline attack is yet to emerge and their defence out wide is suspect?
- Scots have got some great potency in their backs especially speed wise but may be lacking some forward firepower?
- Newington looking the goods all round with a very big and industrious pack and they also have two outstanding centres who have been creating havoc in attack and defence.
- Kings have a very mobile and hard working pack and probably the most potent backline from 15 to 9 but need their forwards to be able to deliver them consistent ball.
- Riverview have been very slow out of the blocks and need to spend the next 4 weeks working on their forwards fitness + they are looking pretty impotent in the backs to date.
- Shore are hard working all over the park and are very, very capable of surprising a number of sides.
The next trial on 16th June sees the following match ups:

- Scots v Riverview
- Joeys v Kings
