Also very sad news coming from the Souths community. If anyone saw the rugby club they would have seen this. I hope the wider rugby community donates and helps out. Our hearts go out to the Ongolea family and the Souths rugby community. Unfourtunately Mel passed away two days ago.

Mel-O Cocktail Gala Evening - 7th July

In partnership with Souths Rugby Union, the Ongolea family will be holding a cocktail evening on 7th July 2012, at Souths Clubhouse.
Sapa Ongolea and his wife Mel are long standing members of Souths, where Sapa continues to be an active and avid player. Earlier this year in January, Mel (33) was diagnosed with an aggressive form of Melanoma. Currently, Mel is at home surrounded by her loving family and enjoying precious time with their two little boys, Isaac (3) and Joseph (6mths).
Due to medical schedules and caring for their young children, the family is confronted by financial challenges. The funds raised from this night will be used to cover medical costs and other out of pocket expenses.
As you can imagine this beautiful young family need all the love and support we can give…
Please come and support this special event and make a night of it with family and friends!!

nothing to do with the fact that they are fielding weaker teams in most divisions due to Uni holidays......sons out and the field would have been perfect by tomorrow. University using their get out of jail free card it seems

TD the issue is they have no control over their fields. They have to do what the Uni says. While the player availability may have been an issue for the club this weekend its not the reason for games not going ahead.

If I didnt have 20 plus years of loyalty to my club Wests. i'd seriously factor in how a Club treats their grounds into the equation.

I'm not interested in rugby on the fairway. I want my rugby club to play games rain, hail or shine. (who cares about a mudpit?)

I've seen some epic Wests matches in the mud at Oldmac & Bottomly Park. So I'd probably head there first.

Bit soft from University on this one. Two days of sunshine is enough to ensure the fields won't be damaged too significantly.

Just move the game to field 2 or 3, to save the main field. Problem solved. Easts played on their Field 3 for almost all of last year.

I have no gripes about Uni cancelling the games.

Its a multi purpose field. Expecting a high jumper to add in the mudpit on his approach to the matt is a bit of a ask.

I just hope it doesnt get changed to the weekend of July 14th as that's the competition bye weekend & I imagine that people have made plans well in advance.

Yeah but the Rugby club has no say. The University owns the grounds and tells them whether they can play or not.

Gents,

I heard Will Genia has moved to the Sunny Coast? Can that be confirmed? If so, that is awesome for the Sunny Coast, sadly not so good for Norths

As Jets said, the University owns the fields, not the club. It's THEIR showpiece oval with the athletics track around it. THEY say whether we can train on them (and lately we have been doing a lot of sessions on the running track, on the grassed areas AROUND the fields, the netball courts & even the carparks) and they called it very early today.

There appear to be some short memories on these forums too: Wests called off the game against Uni in the first round of the year for the same reason. I can't recall too many posters saying that Wests were scared. Those games were made up, just as these will be.

This show the stupidity of th late start to the season.
The finish date is fine but no clubs asked for such a late start.
With the majority of the competition ring for amateur players who are young and often students there should be an earlier start with more byes that at worst cater for wet weather but at best give people thee chance to have some breaks during what can be a long season.
With the Lions tour next year we should seriously look at additional byes on the QLD game weekends to allow clubs to cater for the influx of O/S travellers.
Luckily the rain is forecast to disappear for the remainder of the season.

I think if we (Uni) wanted to use a "get out of jail free card" it would've been for last weekend, since Uni actually have slightly more players available this weekend than last week.

Last Saturday was the final day of exams and there were some big ones on, it seems. And I think most of the players who were heading home for holidays who didn't have an exam on that day had already gone. This weekend we would've been able to play those guys who had the exam (or who had finished exams the day before and went out and got understandably "relaxed").:)

However it worked, we still ended up winning every game for the round bar the Prems game. To suggest that the unavailability of players due to exams and holidays (on top of the usual injuries, colds and flus that all clubs have), had an impact on our ability to field quality sides throughout the club last week, to the extent that the club should elect to postpone a round of games so we could field a stronger side, would unfairly detract from a great second half comeback by Easts in Premier grade.

I love this idea HJ - to have built in "wet weather weekends" into the season which, if they aren't needed, are simply byes, would be fantastic. Where clubs are able, like Uni & Wests have done twice this year now, to play the Premier game very shortly after it should've been held, and then the other teams play on those weekends. It may not mean the end of the make-up games on Tuesday and Thursday nights, but it might mean we only have 1 game of an evening and I get home from those nights where 2 games are played, sometime before 10:30pm! (haha - it's all about me...)

As SouthernX said - people have made plans for that bye weekend. We look forward to it ALL YEAR! :)

I agree wholeheartedly, I can't believe the late start we have to season, I know I got jumped on here last year when I mentioned it, but to keep numbers up I really believe we should be starting at least a month earlier, and as HJ says we can build in a few byes to- A; tie in with big rugby games/tests (last week a good point), and B; make it known that certain bye weeks are used as catch up games so everyone more or less ready. I know we lost a Colts team this year as a lot of the young fellas decided to go to mungo as they wanted to be playing, not training, I know top players are not going to do this, but I think the season should be probably structured to encourage all abilities to our great game!!

Also - Uni isn't the only team with university students!!!!!!!!

Another round of byes would be great to play catch up or general recovery, International games etc

Shortly after this fundraising evening was first planned, Mel sadly passed away, last weekend.
It's impossible to imagine the sorrow this young family is now experiencing.
The Fundraising evening will of course proceed. The Ongolea family deserves all the love and support we can offer.
