Was lucky enough to be in canberra for work on the weekend and got to watch Vikings V Eagles game, Great game by Eagles all over them aggressive at the breakdown tactically disruptive to the Vikings. Incredible to see the Depth of the front row for Vikings Though JP Prudaurd played Brumbies 2 weeks ago against wales and was playing in 2's played and had an absolute blinder of a game then after 10 minutes in the 2nds there was a red card to the Tight head and a replacement came on and was also impressive around the paddock. They didn't look too troubled even though they were a man down virtually the entire game, thought the 14 was good also put some good hits on.

Easts again played host on a stunning Winter’s day at Griffith Oval. However, the day started ominously for the Easts men, with 3rds forfeiting, Colts comprehensively beaten and 2nds scratching together a side only to be beaten by over 50 points.
The match started at a pace, and within 20 minutes, the Whites had posted three tries. Fly-half Billy Chalker and inside centre Sam Windsor were consistently putting their players into holes and leaving the Easts players puzzled.
The contest at the rucks was fierce, with both sides competing strongly. Easts’ Brumby Jerry Yanuyanutawa was prominent as well as the White’s Nik Murray. Wounds sustained by players were testament to the ferocity of the contest. However, once the ball was shifted out to the Whites’ backs, tries generally followed in quick succession.
By half time, the score was 42–0.
The second half was a continuation of the first, with heavy contact in the rucks, but once the ball reached the backs and with space, the Whites’ backs repeatedly made ground and kept the scoreboard ticking over.
When given clean ball, individual Easts players made stirring runs, with centre Jonno Naoupu and Mitch Lewis making some great incisive runs. These though were individual efforts, and in a game involving 28 other men, efforts like this can be easily overshadowed.
Sam Windsor in particular impressed himself on the match, and kept providing his teammates with opportunities. Winger Lachlan Freeth showed incredible pace to embarrass the Easts backs.
Overall the match reflected what had transpired in the lower grades, with the enthusiasm, fitness and poise of the men in White simply too good for Easts. The final score was 70–12.

The match started off tight with both teams exchanging blows, with some great tries conjured up through strong backline moves for Easts and Gungahlin.
Gungahlin’s 10 McMahon was able to direct play effectively, and was duly rewarded with his own try and a swag of conversions. His ability to organise his backline exposed Easts’ major frailty — their inability to reorganise and set a defensive line following quick phase play. However, Easts were able to counter-ruck, force turnovers and exploit weaknesses around the fringe of rucks consistently, making for a close, seesawing first half.
Half time: Gungahlin 21 – Easts 15.
The second half was one that highlit how far behind the men on the red, white and blue are when compared to the top teams. When they needed to, the Eagles were able to step on the gas and roll in another 40 points in the half.
There isn’t a lot to explain when a point per minute is scored. The Eagles were simply dominant in every facet of the match.
Final score: Gungahlin 61 – Easts 15.
On a final note, best wishes to the young Gungahlin lock who was stretchered off. It looked nasty, but it was great to see him surrounded by volunteers from both sides.

I play and coach Queanbeyan 4th grade, we have a team of young blokes and when we can, play contested scrums, we have over the past couple of seasons struggled big time for front rowers, against royals we played a colts front row in contested scrums until after halftime when a prop went down injured. At this stage we were up in the game and just hung on to win after this! We defiantly don't play a squad full of backs, how would we win a breakdown or line out if we did this?

Grant, I think most clubs (with the exception of Tuggeranong) are struggling to attract and develop props, especially across the lower grades.
The misconception that the Whites are playing 'teams of backs' in the lower grades may have something to do with how lean and fit a lot of the forwards are, especially when compared to their opposition (fat, unfit!). As most are relatively young (colts age?), they do give the impression of being backs, but knowing many of them, I know that they are not.
Irrespective, safety should always come first, especially with younger and more inexperienced players.

Non-contested scrums in any grade, prior to the match day.

Probably a few guys won't like this BUT.....back home I played social grade rugby for a few seasons. Most of those guys would be similar to 3rds here....I play 3rds and was even playing 2nds at the start of the season.
Anyway, in social grade all scrums were uncontested, there were no quick line-outs and there is unlimited subs. Given that most guys are just playing for fun and to hang out with the boys, these rules worked real well and encouraged more guys to play.

Attitude is a funny thing, some have it, some don’t. For others it flickers on and off like a switch, bemusing crowds and driving coaches to despair.
The match between the two lowest teams in the John I Dent Cup certainly had its fair share of attitude issues, with both teams at differing stages in the match losing any sense of urgency, alacrity or passion.
Royals started strongly, with poor communication and one on one tackles gifting them early possession in East’s 22. Surely enough, tries came quickly for Royals, and within twenty or so minutes the men in blue lead the game 22 – 0. Tom Cusack showed why he will be a great prospect, with some great runs and great disruptive work around the rucks.
East’s looked incredibly shaky and lacked any kind of urgency and attitude until inside-centre Duncan Fallon made a great run, crashing into much larger men and fighting for every centimetre he could get. This single ferocious action seemed to inspire the tri-colours, and soon after Mitch Lewis crossed for a great try, following some vintage Jimmy Crompton magic. The Easts 10 kicked the ball through the rushing Royals defence, scooped up the ball and managed to get a miracle ball off to Lewis who got across despite some dogged hassling by Royals half Nick Tankey.
As if a switch had been flicked, Royals were now playing without any sense of urgency, passion or direction. Shortly before the end of the half, Augustine Limaleba ran through the Royals pack to cross for a great individual try.
Half time: Royals 22, Easts 10.
After the break, the switch flicked the other way, and East’s looked overwhelmed by the Royals big men. The scrums highlighted this, with tri-colours with the huge Royals front row of Jay Cash, Sam Taiseni and Paula Latu consistently pushing the Easts around. Easts were lucky No. 8 Limaleba was able to save the situation on multiple occasions whilst under extreme pressure.
Unfortunately the continual pressure was telling, and Royals extended their lead comfortably over the half. Ineffectual one on one tackling, poor ball retention lead to many tries for Royals, with their big men in the pack prominent. Aside from a couple of stirring runs and some great defence by Duncan Fallon and a consolation try to wing Josh Munro, little else went to plan. Royals ran away with it to the tune of 46-15.

We on most occassions intend to go uncontested, just like we started against Royals that game and like we did the weekend just gone against Gungahlin where we needed to start our colts coach to play contested scrums until he had to go off at half time to prepare his team. Finals time is a genuine worry for us because we realise we need to contest scrums, we are crossing fingers we have injured players back in time for this. As for playing by the rules of the game in the lower grades, Royals have ran subs on and off in 3's both times we have played them this year (one time just so old man Didier and son could come back on and start a fight because they were losing by so much) and had 3 fresh reserves come on for 3's in one game, don't think this is in the spirit.
