Grafton Update:

Newington have set newer and higher benchmarks for rowing with their depth now not residing in the 1st and 2nd 8 but all the way down into their lower 4's, with the 2nd 4 recording a 6:41 for 2000m, which is a fair result on the course and a generous p.b. for the crew.

Bear in mind the Clarence River is tidal and without a held start, so its possible a following tide and/or a slightly shorter course could have affected the time.

Can anyone comment on an incident at the GPS Sculling trials where a Scots boy was seen rigging a very nice looking Filippi and then showed up to the race in a Sykes?
I saw the GPS Convenor talking to the Scots coaches about this on the day, prior to the sculling trials but I'm not sure what happened..

Not real sure why the GPS Convenor would even care as to the brand of boat the kid was using.

If it has to do with it being Australian made, there's only 3 manufacturers to pick from now.

Am I right, when I look at the draw, that the first time the crews get up to SIRC is at the Kings/PLC regatta on Feb 9th ?? and then possible only once more, (NSW Champs) prior to the HOTR??

Under the GPS 'Gentlemens Agreement' all crews must race using school-owned equipment. Having been affiliated with UTSBC over the winter, said Scots rower (Urquhart) sourced from them a privately owned Filipi that had apparently been used at a time trial that morning on the Nepean; a clear violation of the rules that was addressed prior to racing.
That said, I personally believe that such a regulation is too strict; in no other GPS sport is the use of school equipment mandated.

But I cant think of another sport where the cost of the only real piece of equipment is potentially so great: we dont need that arms race too.

Slow afternoon for you IS?, you've been everywhere!
not the first time non-school equipment has been used...I believe that Shores' 1st VIII 2011 borrowed an ''Empaka'(excuse the spelling) from Sydney rowing club to try to match Grammar, who had bought theirs, which was then stored at SIRC so to be ready just to use for racing!

I thought, as you are on this thread, that a trip to Eton Dorney would be more appropriate !!

I know shore have been going hard at it during the holidays but I also know that Newington had a pretty serious program through the holidays and are more determine now than ever to win the big one! I think we can all agree the shore boys are the crew to beat but then again it's their race to lose. No Doubt the pressure will be on sure due to expectations but we will see what the next few weeks show

yes it would be correct, but don't forget scots, I've seen them train on and off in sculls and fours over the last weeks and I'm sure joeys and iggies would be giving it go over in lane cove

i need two things to be answered...
1. how many year 11s and year 12s are in the shore 1st 8?
2. how come recently in the past 2 years, shore's lower fours have to been up to scratch with the other competitors, looking at the past history, the Shore's fours would be the most successful, if not on par with kings in that regard??

Not sure the answer to your first query but regarding the second, to my observations it all comes down to coaching. Shore consistently set the standard in the top 8's year after year but if you observe the size and athleticism of the rowers from all schools its clear that Shore havent got dominance in that respect, the talent is evenly spread each year.
Ive never seen such clear examples of the importance of coaching as I do each year in GPS rowing. The Scots and Joeys sheds improved dramatically over the last few years ago as a result of deliberate efforts to raise the standard of the coaching programmes.
(And if we look at the improvement of New and Scots in the Rugby, again we see a deliberate effort to raise the standard of coaching)
So hats off to the Shore coaches of the senior 8's !!

Shore are a little light on non-1st VIII yr 12 rowers - last time they went 6/6 there was a whole bunch of Yr12 rowers in the fours and also 3rd 8.
