Last year was not too bad at BBC . 5 rep players including 2 Australian schoolboys- more than any other school in Qld . But they all got injured. Lolo and Quick (gps 1 centre) only played 2 matches each. They still lead BGS by 15 withv10 mins to go but Ben LeRoy got sin binned for high shot.No depth last year. This year is different. New halfback is on contract to Titans my little bro tells me. But no hooker!!red hot back line with 3 pn contract to storm and 1 with Titans and GPS under 16 100 champ in Pearson. enough forwards? I doubt it.

It's hard to find a school that won't put a competitive First XV on the park this year. Even schools like BBC that have been well known for pumping out quality players but who always struggle with depth are addressing issues. GT looked competitive last year at First XV level and always have good depth and BGS winning the premiership after the biggest pumping in history not that long ago, show that there are really no easy beats. The standard of that final game to decide the premiership was a credit to both teams.

I reckon if you put the Brisbane First XV match of the round to air on Fox Sports it would rate it socks off.

The Sonny Bill/Greg Inglis Hybrid that you are all talking about is a boy named Tiaan Wilkins that arrived in Aus this year. Saw Tiaan play a game of league actually the other day and certainly does live up to all the hype surrounding him!

There is many forwards from the First XV Squad last year returning. Bronson, Brad etc. and to add to this the addition more new forwards.

Went to a very interesting talk this week. Dave Alred, who was Jonny Wilkinson's kicking coach, as well as toured with the English RWC teams.
He also coaches a few professional golfers.

Apparently while he was in town, he did a coaching clinic for goal-kickers from all the QLD GPS schools.

Little Bro tells me Wilkins has already broken the 40mtr & 60 mtr records held at BBC by Mitchell Watt(Olympic Games silver medallist).Do not expect much kicking from BBC this year.Finally they can move Josh Bowen to flyhalf(as they always wanted).Wonder if uncle Matt will take time off from the Cowboys to have a look.Little bro tells me 3 schools were after Wilkins but he struck up a great friendship with Bowen at the Melbourne Storm xmas camp and thats why he chose BBC.

Look the last 10years(since importing started ) have made 2 things clear:
1)of those boys who playl eague on sundays many will be injured for Rugby season;
2)you need between 26 and 30 first 15 players to win a premiership -unless you have extraordinary luck with BBC had as many rep players as any school last year but by match 4 they were all injured.They still lead BGS/TGS with 10 mins to go but lack of depth got them in the end.)

Only TSS/NC and CEGS qualify as above-the rest are playing for 4th

Great idea SeaEagles. I agree that there would be a ready market for 1st XV fixtures which generally produce high quality matches backed with the rivalry and tribalism generated from 100 year plus fixture histories and the old school tie aspects of the crowd - and at least there are crowds to generate some atmosphere unlike Colts or grade matches. The tightening of the competition is generally a good thing IMO. Everyone has to be on their game every week and it is a test of culture to see if the often difficult waters of a senior school experience can be negotiated with all players buying into a culture which can keep them steady when the boat rocks - as it is bound to do over a long pre-season and season. BBC may get some quality players in but don't have the requisite culture to keep them at the school - and never have,even before the days of scholarships. They have had some good players but you can't argue with a 100+ year old school with a sole premiership as part of a 4 way tie in the 50's - what rugby history pf high level performance beyond a team in the 50's and a solid side in the mid- eighties does the place have? - bugger all I'd say. Make sure you get it right before you respond too - I'm not saying Gould, Leslie, Gardner,Horwill Genia, Palm et al are bad players - I'm taklking about a collective attitude at the joint which limits their performance and always has. They moved positively to release Lolo after his indiscretions but one wonders how many fair goes he got before the final one tripped him up. NC and TSS have no academic expectations of their teams that they are held to and therefore the players do not operate under the same pressures as BGS, ACGS or GT. Before I am shouted down, this comment has been generated from boys from these schools in genial discussions during representative assemblies I have been closely associated with over many years. That post should get things humming here.

I dont want to wander into Monday's Export post, so I will simply also agree with Sea Eagles that putting it onto fox would get rugby fans very excited, given the lack of a third tier comp in Oz. Anyone know some Fox Executives

Yes, some sensational games occur from week to week in this comp because every game is treated as a Finals game. Rarely is there a second chance for the "loser"

I cannot think of one year during the mid-eighters that BBC had a solid side. From my memory they were cellar dwellers, always overrated themselves and did not seem to do the hard yards necessary to be competitive. But that is ancient history.

As an example, I know when the latter schools mentioned have "exam block" all sports training is usually suspended and there is extreme pressure on the directors of various sports at these schools to ensure that the sport does not affect academic achievement. However, at one of the former schools mentioned, I am aware that during an exam block of that school, many of their First VIII rowers are pursuing courses that do not require OP scores or not subject to exam assessment and the crew actually go rowing for multiple sessions across the day while the rest of their school colleagues are studying or doing exams. One day a person I know ran into the First VIII coach as they boys were getting on the water in the middle of the day and he asked why they were not in school. The response from the coach was "We don't have exam block, we have rowing block." Definitely not a level playing field.

I know that at GT they have no training during exams. I would have imagined in the past the same would have occurred definately at BGS. But for last years team I doubt it. Just clarifying for everyone that BGS do not have an exam block, and we most definately do not take students out of class to play rugby, or any other sport for that matter.

On another note, I remember last year or the year before there was a big debate on the forum about the existence of a GPS Cup.. Whether or not it exists, BGS has had a cracking start to the athletic year so far, winning GPS First's Premierships in Cricket, Volleyball, and Sailing, as well as middle of the pack placings in Rowing and Swimming. BGS Debating is currently undefeated with not many rounds to go, and BGS Tennis has a premiership winning side returning in its entirety for the upcoming season. If the cup exists, Grammar is looking good for it (winning 3/5 premierships at the end of term 1, and looking good for 5/9 by the end of term 2)

I was at the same game and watched Souths beat that Sunnybank team. Souths have several boys from BSH. While Sitanilei played his usual strong running game for Sunnybank, scoring off the back of the scrum, Green was unsighted. On the other hand BSH boys who stood out in a winning performance for South were James, who dominated the lineouts, Pannocinni on the wing, Strachan at 10, Mclean in the forwards and the fullback, name eludes me. It is already apparrent that within the U17 Club competition this year, most of the dominant players are from BSH, playing for Sunnybank or Souths. It amuses me that most of the posts in this forum have have already dismissed BSH as a contender on the basis of last years effort.

There was a match I went down to watch yesterday between Souths u17 and a Gold Coast rep team. Early in the match just as Souths were scoring a try, the flyhalf (I believe) copped a hit as he was passing and may have a season ending injury. Can anyone confirm who it is and if he is okay? Thanks

Heard Nudgee leave on thursday. Nudgee will have to be one of the schools to beat. Appearently they are just guns right across the board, only place they are lacking is in the fly half department but knowing Nudgee they'll probably find some freak import. . . .

I'll put my money on the Kiwi school. Saw some highlights of their National Schools win in NZ, impressive. Not that the Butcher Stripes won't be competitive....
